As Saturday gets closer, the kool-aid gets sweeter and stronger.

Β

4 Weeks ago, WE ALL listed this game as a loss. It was accepted by the majority that this would be one of the two losses this season.

Β

I, for one, have not changed my tune or thoughts regardless of the cheer cheer posts about how great our firepower is, how new their QB is, how Washington beat a depleted USC team (they aren't depleted anymore), how all their defense is new this year, etc.....

Β

I expect a loss this Saturday. My hope is we take them down to the wire. Look like we belong on the same field as USC.

Β

USC HAS NOT ALLOWED A PASSING TOUCHDOWN THIS SEASON!

Β

Think about that for a minute. I DO believe we will hand them their first but it still doesn't negate the fact that in almost all facets of the game, they rank in the top 5.

Β

We almost lost to PURDUE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Β

I am hoping for a win. I will be ecstatic with a win! I will party like it 2099 with a win!

Β

BUT, if we lose, I will not be disappointed as it will be what I expect to happen.

Β

It will be HOW we lose that may disappoint me. There's a lot of kool-aid flowing around, especially here in South Bend. I've taken a sip here and there but I refuse to get drunk from it.

Β

We all know how this is likely to end. Something along the lines of 32-28 USC is what we were hoping for at the beginning of the season. We had this as 1 of 2 of the defininite losses this season.

Β

Hope kept growing and growing into expectation. Not for me. It's still HOPE!

Β

Can it be done? Yes

Β

Will it be done? Probably not

Β

That's the cold hard truth. I am praying! I am hoping with all that I am! This team, University, coach and fans NEEDS THIS WIN!

Β

But, I am not going to "expect". That will break my heart.

Β

My "expectations" will come AFTER the improbable win.

Β

I refuse to set myself up for a fall,,,,,,,,,again!

correct me if im wrong, but isnt the stat that USC hasnt allowed a passing td all year? not trying to be picky in your post but i was just wondering if it is true that they havent given up a offensive td all year?

I'm pretty sure OSU scored an offensive TD on them.

OSU and UW both scored rushing TDs on them.

I agree. I started this season thinking we would drop one to U$C and at least one other school. How we have played to this point has not changed my mind. I know a lot can happen in a bye week.....but I seriously doubt we can go from a team that struggled 4 weeks in a row against 4 pretty average teams to one that can win against U$C....

Β

The fact is, if ND wins Saturday it will be a huge upset.

Β

Maybe it is the severe beat-downs U$C has handed down to ND in recent memory the has destroyed my optimism for this game......or maybe it is just how terrible our D is against the....well....against offensive plays. In my eyes, U$C is more likely to win by 30+ than ND is to win by 3+

Β

And please don't get me wrong. I have high hopes for this season, and I think we are very close to where we want to be.....we just aren't there yet.

well OSU had a couple of big pass plays where the WRs where tackled inside the 10 yardline i believe. so USC may not have given up any passing TDs but they have given up some big plays.

Β

ND losses this game because of USC's run game pure and simple.

Forgive me for the error, it has been corrected.

Β

Point still holds though.

USC has not seen an offense like ours, the same as we have not seen a D like theirs.

Β

Saturday, we'll see. They haven't faced a top 10 WR yet (oh, if only they had to face 2 on Saturday). Have not faced a top TE yet. Nor have they faced the top ranked QB in America.

Β

Ohio State features an anemic and conservative attack. Cal is Cal and blew up the week before v. Oregon.

Β

Locker is the best QB they faced and he went 21/35 for 237 yds, no TDs, no picks.

Β

The best offense they faced was Cal, ranked 49th (yes I realize that includes the aftereffects of the USC beatdown). Ohio State's offense ranks in the 80s in YPG. Washington is 74th w/ about 350 YPG, and got 293 v. USC.

Β

So let's see how this plays out Saturday, and not duck and cover just yet.

While i am known as the eternal pessimist, I am so up for this game, I think we have a real good shot of pulling it off. I think we're going to get some breaks in the turnover department that will put us over.

Β

Now, here's hoping the stripes don't play any part in the game...

The problem is not with our offense. It is with our defense. I just don't think we have a chance of getting their offense off of the field. I think SC will steadily and methodically march down the field and score points all the while chewing up big yards and eating up the clock. Our defense is atrocious--don't let the goal line stands against UW fool you! We will not be able to stop SC's running attack and they will be in 3rd and short situations all day and will convert.

Β

Our offense will give them trouble at times, but their defense will stop us enough times to limit our scoring to under 20 points. We just don't have the horses on the defensive line to stop them. It's just a fact. I hope I am wrong and if I am I will be the first to come on here and admit so. But, we have to look a things from a realistic perspective and realistically SC should win this game by at least 17 points. But they still have to play the game and stranger things have happened........and that's why we can still hope.

Go Irish!

How about a big dose of Lepracat! I dont think anyone has tried to run that againt USC. Jimmy and Golden will have big games and we win a tight one.

There's no way we can lose with our decisive schematicat advantage.

Β

Actually Cal tried to run the Wildcat against Southern Cal, with one of the best backs in the game, and it didn't work at all. I hope our fate doesn't hinge on the Leprecat.

speedster, I kinda have to agree... I think we CAN win, there is even a close to 40% chance we actually pull off the upset. Our run D is weak, floyd is out, turf toe(should not really be an issue, but still), $oCal gets a dangerous receiver back this week, $oCal has the motivation to play for their rb that almost died int eh weight room....plus our players actually go to class and do not have money bet on the game which I am assuming all their players do...so yeah the odds are against us...do i believe we can do this, YES, would I bet my soul that we win...well maybe because deep down even though i have been jaded by teams of Irish past I still believe that there is a magic int he sound of their name....

Here come the Irish of NOTRE DAME!!!

GOOO IRISH!!!

Good to see your feelings in this post NDJoe.

SJ

D-Day: War's over, man. Wormer dropped the big one.

Bluto: Over? Did you say "over"? Nothing is over until we decide it is! Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor? Hell no!

Otter: Germans?

Boon: Forget it, he's rolling.

Bluto: And it ain't over now. 'Cause when the goin' gets tough...

[thinks hard]

Bluto: the tough get goin'! Who's with me? Let's go!

[runs out, alone; then returns]

Bluto: What the fuck happened to the Delta I used to know? Where's the spirit? Where's the guts, huh? This could be the greatest night of our lives, but you're gonna let it be the worst. "Ooh, we're afraid to go with you Bluto, we might get in trouble." Well just kiss my ass from now on! Not me! I'm not gonna take this. Wormer, he's a dead man! Marmalard, dead! Niedermeyer...

Otter: Dead! Bluto's right. Psychotic, but absolutely right. We gotta take these bastards. Now we could do it with conventional weapons that could take years and cost millions of lives. No, I think we have to go all out. I think that this situation absolutely requires a really futile and stupid gesture be done on somebody's part.

Bluto: We're just the guys to do it.

D-Day: Let's do it.

Bluto: *Let’s do it*!

Just my thoughts... :)
