Biggest game of the year. Were huge underdogs at home against a freshman QB running an offense that hasn't really done anything worth noting. They blew out San Jose State, Washington State, and an overrated Cal team (Cal Sucks). They needed a game winning drive against soft coverage to beat an okay tOSU team. They lost to Washington and struggled to move the ball all day. USC isn't the unstoppable force that they have been in recent years, and still, no one is giving us a chance.

That's ok, it'll make it a "signature win" when we come out on top.

Β

I'd be riding high in confidence if we had Floyd, but still think we can pull this out. We need an inspired performance from the front 7 of the D, hopefully this is the week they put it together.

Β

Just remembering a few years ago, when Frome (I believe) was coming off the field with a knee injury, but screaming and waving for the crowd to get up. That is the fire we'll need Saturday.

also USC's OL is real good this year but they only have two 300 lb. guys on the OL, the others are only 285 and 290. they have a light OL but probbly one that is pretty moblie. USC has a good group of RBs and if ND can't stop their run game then USC probbly won't need to throw more then 18 times in this game. at this point im not convinced ND can stop USCs running game, they may need to load the box and take their chances with one on one coverage with their WRs. on offense ND can't afford to shot themselfs in the foot in this game, when they get into the redzone they need touchdowns not FGs. NDs offense is good but they haven't faced any real compotition yet (well maybe udub). if ND can't stop the run and finish their drives on offense then ND has no shot.

Why should anyone pick us to win? What has this team done to make u believe they can win this game.

Maybe I'm just preparing mentally to be disappointed but I just don't see us winning this game. I would give us a shot if we had a healthy Floyd because him and JC are automatic in the RZ. ND has to play their best football to win this game, I like winning but I'm not sure this team can get it done judging on the games played so far.

Β

I really hope I'm wrong though.

We will be in this game. If not, then expect the stands to quietly empty in the 3rd if it's a blowout. Charlie won't survive another year if it is a blow out.

As an ND fan, I can see 1000 reasons why ND will win this one.....but as a logical football fan I can see 10000 reasons why we won't.

Β

I am trying to get pumped up for the game.....but our D has been so absolutely terrible that I have a hard time being anything more than "hopeful" that we will win. I am definitely not optimistic and I am far from being at a point where I expect a win this Saturday.

Β

....man, I hope I am wrong. I really really really do not want to see our D get shredded again this week. I would love to see our blitzes hit home, and to have Barkley rattled all game......but that would just make them run more :bolt:

Β

I may be wrong... but I think our red zone D has been among the top 30 in the NCAA, but we have given up a lot of big play touchdowns...

Β

The one thing I do like about our D going against USC is the fact that Barkley is not a "dual threat" QB so with our blitzes there really isn't any worry about containing the edges on him

Absolutely nothing has shown me that this team can hang with SC. While we've been great at the clutch victories, I think this game will be well out of had before halftime. I have this gut feeling that Damien Williams and McKnight provide all the attack they need and SC makes us their BCS scapegoats with a trouncing of a "ranked" opponent....

Β

That being said, crazier things have happened. My only hope for a win over SC this season hinged on SC having to defend against both Golden and Floyd....

What has SC really shown to say they will blow us out? I am worried about their running attack, but most certainly not worried about Barkley (this year).

Β

Yes their D is good, but just like we have not seen a D like theirs, they haven't seen an offense like ours.

Β

I'm not saying we're going to win, but I'm optimistic to see what ND can do.

I know it sounds trite, but I once took the deposition of Dr. Bernie Siegel in a med mal cancer case. He was touting his "Faith, Love & Healing" and other positive thinking "therapies" in the treatment of cancer. I asked him, "Aren't you doing your patients a disservice by offering false hope?" He responded, "There is no such thing as false hope, there is only false NO hope."

Β

I am on the hope bandwagon - I may be resoundingly disappointed at about 7:00 p.m. on October 17th OR (glass half full) I may be deleriously happy, likely crying, screaming and jumping up and down with joy . . . I vote for THAT.

I'll vote for that to Wilhem. Let's beat these M***ers.

Will it to happen. Go Irish

SJ

While I don't think we will get blown out, I don't have a lot of faith in us winning the game.

I know we have the horses in place, I just think that some of their horses are better.

Β

Anything can happen, so I hope this team is ready to play the perfect game.

I know we can score, but let's see just how good their defense is.

Β

The one hope I have is our redzone defense.

If we can hold these guys to field goals, we have a chance of winning.

If there is a man or woman amongst you who thinks that this team is going to come out flat against USC like we've seen them do in past,

Β

Or that these seniors who have served as a doormat for USC for 3 long years are going to simply look at the Vegas line, shrug their shoulders and sigh because hey, that's what USC is supposed to do to them,

Β

Or that Jimmy Clausen is going to buy into the undeserved hype about USC's defense,

Β

Or that the defense that came up with three goalline stands against Washington is trembling at the thought of Joe McKnight and Matt Barkley coming to South Bend,

Β

Or that Charlie Weis doesn't fathom the importance of this game for not only his career at Notre Dame, but for the nucleus of talent that he's carefully been crafting these last 4 years,

Β

Well, then no offense to you, but you're wrong.

Β

This team has confidence in itself that they can beat anyone, and it's about time for its fans to reciprocate that confidence with some of their own.

Β

Enough of this pandering. The tide of this rivalry turns on Saturday.

Just remembering a few years ago, when Frome (I believe) was coming off the field with a knee injury, but screaming and waving for the crowd to get up. That is the fire we'll need Saturday.

2005. That was electric.

Just rewatched the wind in the third, wind in the fourth 25-24 comeback in 1999 (a game I was honoured to witness in house). That game reminded me that "Some time, Rock, when the team is up against it, when things are wrong and the breaks are beating the boys, ask them to go in there with all they've got and win just one for the Gipper." The Irish are always capable of pulling one out...

There are a couple of questions that we don't have answers for that will determine the outcome of this game. First of all, did those goal line stances infuse this defense with confidence to play an ALL AROUND better game? We will not win this game if SC has 400 yrds of offense.

Β

Secondly, SC WILL double Tate. We need big plays from Parris and Shaq this week. I cringe at the picture in my head of Tate on that crossing route getting lit up by Taylor Mays.

Β

Third, the Oline absolutely must continue to protect Jimmy. Make no mistake, SC will have a couple sacks on Sat, you can write that in pen. But we need to limit them and JC needs to correctly check off the blitz looks. Hurt them where the blitzes come from. LB Blitz = Rudolph over the middle. Corner blitz = quick pass to Tate or Parris/Shaq on the edge.

Β

Lastly, we simply will not win this football game if we don't get 7 points in the red zone. FG's aren't going to cut it against this team. USC is beatable, the unknown is what ND team shows up and can THEY beat them. If it's the team that showed up against Purdue, the answer is no. If it is the team that showed up against Nevada, the answer is maybe baby...JUST MAYBE.

My liver and I will be doing our part.
