I have read all about Sam but it does seem to me in the last game Duncan was standing around as a couple opponents sped around him and climbed all over Jimmys back. (?)

On the whole I think the o line has done a good job giving Jimmy time. Duncan protects the blindside so when he gets beat we know about it. It may be harder for Jimmy to get the ball off as quick without Floyd beating his man time and again. O line is the second least of my worries this year behind QB.

Yes but occasionally a guy is going ot get beat. But Young keeps getting dumb penalties.

Last week he got called for holding (when he basically tackled a guy) on a screen pass.

I mean you are coached to release the guy on a screen pass..

I was going to start a thread on the few things I still haven't seen improvement on with this team, but we're winning, and Lord knows we've had too many of those threads already.

Β

So I'm just gonna focus on Sam right now. Besides his great size, I just don't see this guy having a great impact in the NFL. He's still very slow laterally, and he constantly gets manhandled by ends that are tiny in comparison to him. I think he could stand to be two or 3 inches shorter because he still stands too high and constantly gets pushed back over and over again.

Β

If 6 foot 2 college ends put him on skates regularly, what are quality NFL ends going to do to this guy?

He keeps forcing the coaches to have to help him with a tight end.

Β

I love the guy, but after 3 plus years of starting games on the line, when is he going to improve his technique?

Seeing as he's only gotten about 6 months of quality coaching while at ND, I think Sam Young has a good shot to reach his potential. Fact is the o line has been pretty darn good Sam included. Purdue knew we couldn't throw effectively last game and the o line basically put up the points for us still. If John Sullivan became an NFL starter imagine what Sam Young may become.

HAHA yeah. The line this year really highlights how awful Latina was as a coach.

Β

He was never detail oriented enough for my liking. (My amateur opinion)

I don't know if I would want to give Latina that much guff.

Β

Hear me out. He was a respected coach coming in. Offensive linemen need time to mature. Latina had freshmen and a few sophs playing the line. There should never be less than a junior starting on either the defensive or offensive line (other than freaks of nature, which we all thought Sam Young was). I am not saying Latina was great or anything. I just believe what did Latina in was that his scheme/coaching/whatnot didn't fall in line with what Charlie wanted and that he has children to play instead of men (physically).

Β

I am more than happy with the new coach and yes, have seen improvement but I will not say Latina sucks at coaching because at one time, he was very good.

Β

Again, just my opinion.

Latina never had a good running attack o line at Ole Miss. I remember talking to an Ole Miss person back in '06 about Latina and he specifically noted that Latina sucked at coaching for run production. It is amazing how inept Latina was that in 6 months time Verducci can have our rb's running for 4 +yds a carry against mich st., mich.,etc.

Β

Resume whatever, Latina was all bone and no meat.

The DD board for one was climbing all over to fire Latina, fact. I myself was for keeping him till the obvious hit me between the eyes and I too said replace him.

I'm very pleased with what Verducci is doing with the line. One thing that stuck out with me was that he was teaching and having the guys learn about the whole play, and seeing the impact of what they are doing, and how that translates into the play development. I think it helps to see how your block affects the play when it is going the other way. Many times I think a lineman will not push as hard when the play is going the other way because they think their assignment won't be important on the play. Knowing how a half-ass block will affect the whole play, I think will may them play more to the whistle. Just my thoughts. It's good to have a running game this year!!

Maybe it's because we won, but the shot of the o-line walking up to the line of scrimmage on that last play got me really excited. They looked confident and powerful.

We've had very little to complain about on this side of the ball and I for one have been pretty satisfied with the effort of the big eaters.

You can't teach speed & quickness.............& big Sam has neither. He'll be lucky if he's a 6th round draft pick. I'm more upset because Charlie refuses to bench him & try someone else.....it couldn't be much worse.

wow.........speechless.... my gues the only reason you even recognize him is because he got a false start or holding call.....have you truly watched his play? often you cannot truly evaluate an offensive linemans game play unless you are watching a tight view of the game typically from the endzone angle. IMO he has done a pretty damn good job short of some mistakes....ie penalties

NOT AS AN OFFENSIVE TACKLE, A TACKLE HAS TO STAY ENGAGED IN ORDER TO PREVENT THE DE FROM PICKING THE BALL OFF AND IN THE EVENT THE DE MAKES AN INSIDE MOVE, YOU ARE SUPPOSED TO CAVE HIM ALL THE WAY INSIDE WHERE HE WILL PICK OFF DT'S WHO ARE GIVEN A FREE RELEASE BY THE CENTER AND GUARDS...

Β

Typically the play side guard has to block the playside corner or containment

the center has to get to the outside linebacker

the wide receiver on the playside has to crackback on the safety when in zone and when in man, he is supposed to run off the corner and the playside guard then adjusts to the safety who will be screaming downhill

the backside guard will try to get to the middle linebacker or work as a lead blocker down the numbers ...

Β

So, now that you have your facts straight on the blocking responsibility, would you care to retract your earlier statement...

We can analyze and scrutinize all we want. We can even throw out techinical jargon but it won't change the fact that #74 has had some painful penalties called thus far... Lipstick on a pig at this point. He's got talent and it pisses me off that he's still making these stupid-ass mistakes. Mistakes that could cost us later on down the road.

I agree with much of what you have to say, Speedster. I work down the hall from a guy who played on the offensive line at Ole Miss (well before Latina's time) who used to tell me how lucky we were to have Latina as a coach, based, I'm guessing, on the positive results that he saw from Latina's work at Mississippi. I was thus willing to give Latina a break, even when we were constantly eaten up by blitzes in Quinn's junior and senior years, figuring that some growing pains of youth and the some poor O-line recruiting over the years were to blame. What finally made me question my stance, however, was a comment Verducci made soon after his arrival at ND expressing amazement at the fact that our linemen lacked knowledge of even some fairly basic techniques. The vast improvement we've seen in the line from everyone (yes, even Sam Young) seems to confirm Verducci's assessment of where we were previously.

Β

As for the holding calls, I'd dare say there are precious few plays during the course of any game when someone couldn't be called for holding. Given their placement in formations, tackles just seem to get called more often because they're dealing with linemen curling from the outside. Hell, the refs seem to expect holding on any decent play to the outside given the phantom holding calls we've been assessed over the years.
