His two and three star recruits just beat a 24th ranked team on the road. 28-16 Cincy over Oregon State. Defense was lights out.

It'd be a match made in heaven for ND and Kelly if Weis can't turn this thing around.

We can do better. And, is that 24 ranking really deserved? You can't tell.

Respectfully disagree. He's just as impressive as Urban Meyer, imo.

I'm not comparing him to Meyer. We need to think bigger: Shanahan, Gruden, Cowher, Butch Davis, Mike Leach, Tuberville, OK State's coach, Tedford. What is Kelly's most impressive win? He plays in the Big East.

Kelly can't control who he plays he just wins. If he takes a pitiful Cincy program to Big East champs/ BCS bowl again he's got a superb resume and will be a guy who's proven he can win in the college game. And that's at Cincy with 2 and 3 star players, imagine what he could do at ND.

Β

How are Mike Leach, Tubberville, Mike Gundy, etc. bigger than what Meyer's turned out to be?

The announcers stated the following "Closing Stat":

Β

That since Kelly became the Cincy coach in 2006, they haven't lost a game when leading while entering the 4th quarter. I think it was like 23 times. now 24.

Β

Wish we could close like that.

I'm not saying they're bigger than Meyer, I'm saying they're bigger than Kelly. You could probably subtract Gundy, but he has done more with less in a much harder conference. I'm saying, yes, Kelly may win; but look at who he plays. Does that REALLY prove a lot? I mean, the BSU to Colorado experiment is failing miserably. "It's big twelve football, brutha!" Hawkins shows that for every Meyer, there is also a Hawkins.

Β

I say go take a look at some ex-NFL guys and MAKE them reject you, first, then we can move down the list. We shouldn't set our sites low, immediately. Shoot for the stars, first.

Β

I guess I never really answered, but Mike Leach took an awful Texas Tech team and turned it into something using an offense that is competitive with the best teams in the country. Gundy has done similar, but I would place him slightly below Leach. Tuberville was pretty damn good at Auburn and is Catholic. The ex-NFLers don't need much more mention than just that - they were HCs in the NFL who went to Super Bowls, who may consider moving down into college where they don't deal with the same pressures as they do in the NFL. Butch Davis is a great recruiter and coach, though he is stuck at UNC. If I had my choice and could get whoever I wanted in a fantasy world, I would get Cowher or Gruden - two guys who energize the sideline simply by being themselves.

Look, NFL guys' records when they come to the college ranks (especially to us) aren't all bouquets and banquets either. Kuharich came here from the pros- he was terrible. Devine came from the pros- though he won a championship he was run out of town on a rail.

Charlie came from the pros. Part of his problem has been adjusting to the difference in the players as well as the game. Learn from the past. We need an up and coming college coach who has been successful on each rung of the ladder on his way up. That person is Brian Kelly.

End of story.

Agreed, 100%. Kelly comes in, makes a program a lot better and wins ballgames. Period. I'm not saying fire Charlie Weis, but if things don't finish well, I think Kelly is the best option out there. He's going to win national titles eventually, whenever he gets his shot at a top-tier program.

agree. CW is not fit for college football. hes just not. thats it.

Β

i would love to get chris peterson that would be amazing, brian kelly would be just as good. or kyle wittingham from utah.

And let me add that Ara came from Northwestern. Lou spent one year in the NFL and realized it was a different game and wasn't for him. There's a lot of players that are good to great players in the NFL who aren't much in college. And visa versa. They are two different games and require different talents from coaches. Get someone who knows how to build a program and how to win games. The pros don't build programs. They don't recruit. They don't take raw talent and move it around and teach it how to play (and win).

we need somebody who can win without relying on a number one recruiting class every year. Notre dame will always recruit better than cincy, if kelly can win there just imagine what he can do here with more talent

back before Weis came here and he was still the OC in New England, would he have been on a short list of coaches people wanted to see at ND?

it doesnt matter who the coaches are that one could want to see here, none of them come with any guarantees.

if im making out a list of coaches i want to see, im thinking of someone who has won not only with top talent, but against top talent. winning in the Big East or Western American Conference doesnt really give me chills. the #1 guy i would want is Meyer, a proven winner.

Β

..but for now im supporting Weis, because hes not going anywhere during the season and i want to see ND winning ball games. aslong as Weis is winning hes going to be at ND until HE decides to leave.

the last thing we need is another NFL guy that we have to give 3 yrs just to adjust to the college game.

Β

dont forget that Kelly has won everywhere he's been kinda like Meyer. He was in D-II and won the nat'l championship, then Central Michigan and turned that program around, and now at Cincy where he's making them a winner.

Β

You're saying he doesnt have a signature win. Either does Charlie. Kelly's excuse is b/c he hasnt played many top BCS schools. What's CW's excuse?

Β

If Kelly stays at Cincy for 3 more yrs, I bet ya he'll have more than a couple signature wins.

Is everyone here willing to take a coach who has never been in charge of a team with any expectations?

Β

Here's the thing, when Kelly comes in, the team doesn't have any expectations. When he leaves, they do.

Β

Grand Valley: If they don't win a national title now (or at least the couple years after he left), it's a disappointment.

Β

CMU: A team that won nine games in four years before he got there is a disappointment now if it doesn't win the MAC and/or pull an upset against a BCS foe.

Β

Cinci: A team that was a darkhorse in the Big East and is now the clear-cut favorite to win it, and I imagine will be for the next few years.

Β

As much as I think Kelly is destined for great things (and if Weis has to go eventually, I'd like those great things to come at ND), I will admit that this is crazy, considering we have a coach and a team coming off an emotional win over a rival.
