*$*#% ESPN - We'll improve @ every position next year

Posted

How can BSPN think we won't be more than two games better next year. We will be better at every position:

QB, HB, TE, WR #1, WR #2, RT, RG, C, LG, K, P, all return on offense. They all will benefit from another year experience. At the very least, ESPN must admit they won't be worse.

Kamara, DWalker, or Goodman should all be upgrades over Grimes @ WR #3.

Aldridge will be an upgrade over Asaph @ FB.

And, at least from the run game standpoint, Duncan will be an upgrade over Turk @ LT.

Plus we replaced Latina with Verducci which, based on the last Irish Eyes drills I saw, seems to be an upgrade.

Weis also replaces Hayward as the play caller which has to be an upgrade.

On defense, we return our middle Linebacker (B Smith) and three Defensive lineman (I Williams, Kerry Neal, and E Johnson), two safeties (if you include H Smith - plus K McCarthy), and two CB (if you include Walls and McNeil).

I also believe KLM will be an upgrade over Justin Brown, Hafis Williams and Newman will be an upgrade over Kuntz, and either Filer, T'eo, or Fleming will be upgrades over H Smith and Crum.

The secondary will be awesome with the safeties as H Smith, Sergio, and Kyle with the younger McCarthy providing additional depth. Plus the cornerbacks of Walls, McNeil, Blanton, Gray, and Slaughter absolutely kick ass!

Plus Tenuta will be calling the plays which, as much as I love Corwin, should be an upgrade.

I just don't get it?

Because they don't think the run game will improve at all. I can't really blame them either because I am FAR past blind faith in Olines at ND.

There's a strong case to be made that ND's strong Olines left with Joe Moore.

corso in the interview with hansen had a LOT of nice things to say about verducci. FWIW...

If you bring three guys in from Mars and you ask the Martians where they would want to see a college football game, even they know enough to say 'Notre Dame.'" - Lee Corso

Haha, gotta love it!

I'd be content with 9-3.

With the caveats of no blowouts or frustrating/hairpulling losses.

Cappy, it is ok to say that... We all hope we win 10+ but i can see us lose 3 for sure...

There is no question Notre Dame is better talent wise than they have been in a long time, but until I see them go in and push around BC, MSU, and Pitt; plus compete with 'SC I will be skeptical. I am very glad Weis was retained for this season, but there really are no excuses for not having an outstanding season...

Good point Chainsaw...to me its not about our W-L record, its about how we perform in games. As long as we are physically dominating the teams that we should dominate because we have superior talent (in my mind that means everybody except for USC and Michigan) then I'll be happy. If MSU and BC continue to blow us off the line, then I'll know that we should have more wholesale changes in store.

Cappy, for me every loss is an excruciating hair pulling loss... hahaha

we are clearly more talented in the top 25 players then michigan as well-- only usc has more raw talent--and IMO in the top 25 or 30 group we match up way better then we did even in 2005

MSU and BC-- forget about it-- they will be roasted and toasted in 09----

skepticism for a program thats been 10 and 15 for 2 years-- albeit with a truck load of excuses and many of them good ones-- nonetheless skepticism is reasonable even if i dont practice it!

lets just not be so skeptical that we have to wait till the usc game to accept what a good team we have--- afterall thats half the season being skeptical---thats a waste

after nevada- michigan and msu turn into 3 and 0---- skepticism should be shown the door and FANatacism should be the rule. ND = BCS!

Oh, and I forgot Randy Hart and Bryant Young should be an upgrade over JAbby.

I think it is fine to be skeptical as fans who've seen and heard the optimism before without the results. I rewatched the Syracuse game and our line was every bit as bad as 07 in that game. But I do have a problem with ESPN analysts totally ignoring any logic. I also agree that, while I believe the line and the run game will be improved, I want to see them actually manhandle someone before I will predict a BCS. But, as far as I know, they didn't talk about the line. They talked about Jimmy's arm and pocket prescence. Jimmy was dominating when given the time to throw. His pocket prescence was fine. Granted he will never be a Joe Montana or Theisman who are skilled outside the pocket. But he is fine in the pocket.

The main beef I have with the ESPN yahoos is the BCS equation is partially dependant on ranking by these kind of guys.

Georgia i'll qualify your comments with an "IF jimmy has a pocket."

we should be fair here. the line cut their sack total in half last season. now, that doesn't tell the whole story, as JC was pressured at times without being sacked but on the whole, the line was pretty decent at pass blocking last year and one could reasonably expect them to be even better this year.

Honestly, we REALLY could be improved at EVERY position. When I evaluate I draw an

arrow either up or down at each position and that includes special teams and coaches.

If a player returns then the arrow is automatically up unless coming off an injury.

I honestly have never seen a situation where every arrow is pointing up.....until NOW.

It doesn't matter what we did against Syracuse. I really have trouble explaining that

game to OU fans. What matters is that we will improve MORE this year then we did last

year. Last year we won 7 games and probably should have won games against Pitt,

North Carolina and Syracuse. I would be very disappointed with 9 wins this year. This

is a legitimate TITLE RUN.

Check out collegefootballnews....great hairpulling stuff.

First guy predicts ND to open 0-2

Nevada got killed by Hawaii, has no D, and plays horrible away. Michigan's D is suspect and O will be too until QB develops or is the second coming of Pat White.

Games in order of toughness:

USC

MSU

Nevada

Stanford

Michigan

BC

Pitt

UCONN

Wash

Navy

Purdue

Washington State
