"Notre Dame's recruitment of a second quarterback in the class of 2010 continues to pick up steam as the Irish recently checked out 6-foot-3, 175-pound prospect Bryan Bennett from Crespi in Encino, Calif."

This is on the front page of Irish Illustrated.......

I think that means they (II and maybe by extension, the staff) are categorizing the recruits by tier. Meaning their top choices: Montana, Hinder, etc. who have offers now are the primary ones they want and the next wave (people they are evaluating now) may start getting offers depending on how they do in this May eval period. I don't think it means anyone is in the bag at this point.

i think it means they're now looking to take two QB's in his upcoming class. ziggy?

Yes, I think you're right as well. I think they were only going to take one if they were a serious player for Heaps which by now we know we are not.

Am I the only one who thinks this two quarterback strategy is going to backfire? You could argue it already has. Who wants to come in and compete with someone where you can go somewhere else and be the man. No one wants to be a four-year back up. Doesn't this essentially guarantee the eventual transfer of one quarterback? So we're back to one quarterback anyway. I sometimes wonder if this strategy is preventing us from getting ONE qb.

Doesn't seem to be a problem at USC...

When you do the two qb thing, you typically take at least one lesser recruit if not two slightly lesser recruits who are getting a shot where they wouldn't typically get a shot, yet have the idea in the back of their heads that they could be the man at a big time school. Additionally, you are only one or two injuries away from starting depending on your place on the depth chart. Hell, look at Pat Dillingham. Worst QB ever.

'Bout time!

WELCOME TO DD Gforce!! Glad you finally decided to join in! :D

My .02. This is one of those "leap years" for QB's at ND. There's too few years between probable starters. With a year further away from Dayne, I see next year as us picking up another TOP tier high school QB. I truly believe THAT is affecting Montana's decision.

Welcome at long last to DD Gforce.:) I'll sort of echo Speedsters take on QB's. I feel one injury or one bad game, the next QB could be the man.

basically signifying that we're still looking for two QBs and like someone else said, these are plan B options or guys that may be projects or that havent been evaluated by the staff yet. personally it's not Irish Illustrated's job to label these kids b/c they dont know all of the circumstances, but some of these kid's look good.

IrishWave - you might have said it best, when we're looking for a 2nd QB, this is usually a guy who is talented but would rather play at ND as a back-up - maybe get some garbage minutes, maybe get a bigger chance if there's an injury - versus playing at Central Washington.

If you get the machine up and running, you can bring in a 5* type each year and hope they are good with sitting for their turn. If you miss out like we did last year and need a little more depth, you have to look for a 2nd QB which is what I think we're doing this year.

Welcome Gforce!

I think you hit the nail on the head. I can also see taking two this year messing up our Qb recruiting next year, and then we're right back where we started. The "USC" can do it" doesn't hold any weight either they're in the national championship convorsation every year, we arn't. That's the difference.

I hear ya Djones...my thoughts exactly on the USC comment. When we win like they do, we may have the luxury of stacking quarterbacks. We don't. I just remember the last time we had multiple QBs (Frazier, Jones) that didn't exactly work out so well.

I could be way off base on this...I'm just a little puzzled why we haven't snagged anyone yet. Yes, I know it's only May, but we have a good coach, two years behind Crist, outstanding receiving corps. I would think this is an extremely attractive opportunity for a QB....but then that could be my Irish bias....

CW'S job security....

Doesn't seem to be a problem at USC...
