Most important part of that article? This quote by Lemming:

“Notre Dame is going to have to adapt to the Florida-Texas-USC recruiting model,” CBS College Sports recruiting analyst Tom Lemming said. “That means they’re going to have to start winning."

I couldn't agree more.

me too. ND has been putting together some pretty good recruiting class but sooner or later ND is going to have to start winning and winning with style points if they want that trend to continue.

Notre Dame is going to have to start winning, well duh thanks Tom for the breaking newsline. ;)

That's why they pay him the big bucks.

well to be fair it may seem obvious-- BUT it hasnt been the way we have been recruiting these last two classes---- in fact-- we have pulled in 41 players in the last two years while going 10 and 15---41 great players most of the schools in the country would trade their classes for--- HOW-- we have been selling the school-- the depth chart--the potential--the open honest family atmosphere-- and the personality of the coach and the recruiters---- THAT WONT WORK THIS YEAR--- as we have already been seeing---- lemming is 100% on target for a school that has been recruiting high quality talent without WINNING---- now we have a coach on the bubble and a team that MUST PRODUCE OR WE WONT BE EVEN NEAR THE TOP 25 in recruiting---so the truth hurts a little-- and personally i expect little in recruiting until we start to PLAY GREAT FOOTBALL-- IMO we wont even have ten recruits by kickoff---more likely only 7 or 8----- the last 10-15 have to be earned with WINS --NOTHING ELSE WILL WORK THIS YEAR!!

I don't think Lemming was just stating the "obvious", but think it was a little bit of a shot at ND -- and a deserved one.

Sure, Weis has done everything he can to prove himself on the recruiting playing field. But sooner or later, if you want to be considered at the top with the Big 3 -- USC, Texas, and Florida -- ND needs to win games.

They've done everything but that. Huge wins and BCS bowl appearances, and this school doesn't make it easier for guys like McCoy, Fortson, Jenkins, Will Hill, and Buford Georgia defensive tackle to look elsewhere.

Those are the guys elite schools bring in year after year. To get to that point, it's simple -- we need to win.

I read that whole article, and only one thing stood out. Lou Holtz played in the bookstore basketball tournament? Can't picture Lou ballin'.

all true and i AGREE 100% that winning is the final piece to being a perennial recruiting power BUT...if you looked at or heard about the recruiting study done a few months ago and written up about by SI's CFB guy, you will see that geography is the SINGLE largest factor in a recruit determining where to play CFB. now, before everyone and their brother do the DD thing and start listing anecdotal evidence pointing to guys who didn't go somewhere based on geography, please save it. the study just says OVERALL, geography is the most important factor.

my point for bringing this up is that CW and ND are going to be behind the eightball NO MATTER WHAT they do on the field/off the field when it comes to recruiting against teams who's homes states are tx, fla and cali. period. throw in our academic requirements as well and it's going to be really hard to be a top 5 school for recruiting every year. top 10? yes, i think so.

just wanted to bring this up. carry on...

42, GREAT POST , WE WILL BEAT USC THIS YEAR, msu AND THAT OTHER SCHOOL FROM BOSTON could give us problems . :pwe will be in the bcs bowl hunt, if we play florida, we lose , anyone else we should be competive and win . go irish ;)

Used to play each year - saw him dive for a loose ball and come up bloody. Wouldn't stop and his team won - of course he had some big dudes on his team...

Great lead in to my post in the General Section:

Back in the '80's, you would see some great teams in Bookstore. One year, either Blair Kiel or Steve Beuerlein made it the finals for a fantastic game. I can also remember seeing Tony Rice on the courts just playing pick up during his freshman year: man, he could sky -- don't know if he played Bookstore or not.

True story: I was working at the ACC as student security in '87. Coach Holtz walks in and he looks like hell. I said, "how's it going Coach, bad day." He says, "they don't give the old man any breaks on the court." Turns out his team got beaten by another one full of football players, and he got a little roughed up: or, at least, that was what I always presumed.

That's his passion, played golf with him at Knollwood and same attitude. :)
