Was searching for stories on defensive personnel and came across something

very interesting. A report by Ivan Maisel on UHND stated that Charlie

Weis stated that Kapron Lewis Moore is projected to be our BEST defensive

lineman this year. WOW!!! We know that Ethan Johnson is a 5 star stud

coming into his own and finally gives us sack potential from the down linemen,

but if KLM is even better, holy crap Batman!!!

With all the rookie quarterbacks we face and John Tenuta sending the

kamikazes, I'm thinking we might set a new standard for turnovers, sacks,

and lost yardage plays. Agree??

Like a lot of you I try to read all the practice reports. One of the things I get out of them is that Ethan Johnson is coming on hard as our best DL. If this is true about the staff's thoughts on KLM then so much the better.

Also;

The coaches seem to be high on John Ryan...someone who up to now hasn't always impressed...again potential good news. (Edit: I guess that could be bad news too.)

One sequence as described in one of the reports sounded like something out of an '85' Bears practice...the defense just shut down the offense for about 8 or 9 plays with about 3 passes knocked down. (I know the defense should be ahead of the offense at this point). I just hope the defense can stay ahead...I don't know of any better motivation for an offense than a defense that will kick their a@# in practice if they don't bring their 'A' game.

Anyway just a couple of thoughts...it's still waaaaay early in the game.

I disagree with this. Most 4-3 DEs are in the 245-260 range -- right where Ryan is. He has the height to play as a DE, and I think this height is what killed him as a linebacker -- he just was too long to be fluid dropping into coverage.

I know a lot of us are down on Ryan, but I'm expecting big things. Ryan is the exact type of guy that BC brings in and KILLS teams with -- high motor, not the most gifted of athletes but a solid player. He was playing out of position last year, and he's the prototypical college 4-3 end.

I might be in the minority but I think everyone's tune on John Ryan will have changed at the end of this season. I think he's going to be a good football player for this team.

I think John Ryan has been jacked around by having to switch positions twice.

He was a bit slow and awkward at linebacker but Defensive End is his more

natural position. I can imagine him hitting the weights hard and he will be

very motivated as his time is running out. I don't think he will be the starter

but I certainly agree he will surprise.

tchris is a huge john ryan fan, oklamoma. he'll appreciate your analysis.............. ;)

Wasn't KLM hurt most of the off season? I'm on his bandwagon, but if he is indeed hurt, I'll need to rachet my expectations back a little bit.

John Ryan must have naked pictures of Charlie's wife or he's a different player in practice becuase he's never once looked good on the field. Luckily he won't see the field this year.

Did you guys see the story on Hafis Williams in the South Bend Tribune??? What

gets me so pumped is the mention of 'speed'. Charlie is concerned we will leave

open running lanes because we are so quick. Hafis says he is bigger and stronger

and in his picture he looks like a beast. He has 4 years of eligibilty, Ethan Johnson

3 years, KLM 4 years, Flemming 3 years, Cwynar 4 years, Neuman 4 years and we

are bringing in a 5 star DE next year!!!!

I was expecting all this in '08...

Colour me skeptical until otherwise proven wrong...

We got a taste of it early in the season but our blitzing never got any results because our line was undersized / outmanned. We actually have the personnel to do it this year....we didn't last year. This is probably the best group of players JT has had in HIS system and just based off of what he was able to accomplish at GT with players not nearly as highly regarded gives me reason to be very optimistic about 09's D.

I agree with OklahomaIrish as far as KLM being a beast and contributing greatly this year. 4 years of KLM and Stockton on the defensive line will be a joy to watch on Saturdays.

GT lost 38-10 to Utah in the '05 bowl, then proceeded to cough up a 18 pt lead to WfVU in the second half of a bowl game the next year.
