greenmountainirish
I do not know what Charlie is doing, but he should give a call to Louis Nix and offer him a scholarship.
Guest brady112106
The kid looks like a beast. He would be a nice get.
DJonesIRISH
2 problems: 1. He has a 2.5 GPA. He's trying to bring it up, but it is an issue. 2. He's a soft verbal to Miami. I'm not saying it's impossible, but I think we have a better shot at McCoy and the kid at Oaks Christian and we only have two spots max for dt
TheRizz
I think he's going to be similar in recruiting as Marcus Fortson. Listening to everyone but in his mind, he's already going to Miami. Plus, I think they are comparable dominating players.
IrishCalves
I do not know what Charlie is doing, but he should give a call to Louis Nix and offer him a scholarship. Charlie is pitching Denzel McCoy on being our only offer at defensive tackle. Hypothetical situation here. Imagine being wooed by another company, going through the interview process, then being told, "You're the guy we want, you're the first and only guy we've offered this position to." And its understood that the offer doesn't have a timetable on acceptance or rejection, 'cause you've got a lot to think about, say from other competing offers. Then, say 4 days later, you find out another candidate thats been interviewed has also been offered the same job job as you, the one that you were led to believe was yours for the taking. How would that make you feel? In the modern business world, you might understand and empathize with the company's situation of supply and demand within their staff. But a 17-18 year old? Not so much. It'd probably be viewed as a bit of a betrayal. With the stance we've taken already with Denzel, unless they change their tune, thats the impression he probably has right now, and until then offering the likes of Nix, Allen, Smith, etc is just speculation. We made our bed with the hopes of impressing upon McCoy, and for all we know, we might've helped our cause in doing so. Now we're going to have to lie in it, and try to keep these other kids in play without offering them. Thats the tradeoff you take when you go all in on a given player, pros and cons. tchris555
true but it's still foolish. we need 2 a year without exception. we should probably offer that kid from Oaks Christian as well i do view this though as a positive about how the staff feels about all 3 of newman, hafis, and cwynar
greenmountainirish
Sorry to intrude on my own article BUT where does it say he has a 2.5 GPA? I was just doing this article because of the new article on irisheyes where it states that Miami set the bar, and he wants to know which school can set the bar even higher, which would mean he isn't necessarily solid on Miami. ND is a school on his list and I was wondering whether we would join the party and offer this kid. If he is a grade problem, we could just simply not offer him. IrishCalves
We landed 4 DTs two years ago (Johnson, Cwynar, H. Williams, Newman), and we got a guy last year too (Stockton). 6 in 3 years is pretty par for the course should we get just Denzel, and by the time this current cycle shows up in South Bend there'll be at least 5 guys at DT with three or more years of eligibility - not bad at all as far as planning for the future. And if you're thinking "what have we seen them do?", realize that its defensive tackle, where shirting is more common practice than at DB, WR, etc. Neither Derek Landri nor Trevor Laws saw repetitions as a freshman, and both are now earning NFL paychecks. Cwynar needed to add the bulk, while Hafis and Newman needed to work on their conditioning to be every down caliber D1 players. Perhaps all we need is to give these guys time, rather than throw #s at the problem in the hopes of fixing it. We know that enough of them got HS accolades for us to feel comfortable about their talent level coming in (EJ would've made a 4th Army-All American invite amongst the 5 if not for injury). I'm not saying we know that they're going to pan out, but them sitting isn't evidence to me that they won't amount to anything either in their careers. We can't tell really just from sitting in our armchairs. Would I like two? Sure. But is two a without question need? Not necessarily - I don't think we know enough to make that call right now. I think bringing in a guy like Ferguson or Leuders, guys who've been mentioned as having the potential to grow into the position, is probably good enough, especially when compared to gaping numerical holes at S, DE, and to lesser extents at QB, OT, and CB. The need for #s at DT falls somewhere in the middle of the pack IMO.
tchris555
im just sayign it's a positino you have to have depth at. They take a lot of punishment and it's best to be able to have more than 2 DT's at a time that you can trust to play. Landri was coming off a really bad injury when he came in as a frosh, but yes, with a healthy roster you wouldn't expect many DT's to play as frosh. chirodomer
Mark my words #9 will be one of our best DT's ever in the history of ND football. He gave people fits as a freshman!
Island Domer
You really can never have to many quality guys on the DL especially up the middle. I don't like having all of our eggs in one basket either. THat has really hurt us in the past. I.E. McCoy

Especially considering the attrition rate we have from guys that are in that 300 pound area (Hand, Webb, for example), the more the merrier.
