I really think by everything that I read that we have a chance at him. Here's an interview with his private QB coach and Jake. Jake doesn't start talking until (about) the 9 minute mark and it's mostly about the Washington Huskies since his QB coach is an alumn but you can almost tell that Washington really isn't a leader. Notre Dame is not mentioned at all but it gives you a little taste of how this kid thinks and IMHO, he sounds a lot like Manti.

Speedster I hope, but I'm not getting my hopes up. I live in Washington and right now, seems like he's all UW. Personally I think he's shopping for team number 2, or the other hat on the table if you catch my drift.

Unless he's done a 180 in the last year, he's headed to Washington. He's been telling every for the past year that regardless of their record he wants to go their and help turn the program around. Not at all similar to Manti at least in responding to the press.

Wow! You guys may have been following this guy closer than I but in this interview, he doesn't sound all that enamored with Washington. It's early and I could be wrong but Manti was supposed to be BYU to lose early and he was saying nice things about them but CW and Polian turned him around.

(Crossing fingers)

When we offered, we told Heaps, "You're our only guy this year." We've since offered Gardner.

Read between the lines - the staff isn't that confident in getting Jake either.

I'm pretty sure they've moved on, and are probably looking at the next batch of offers to dish out (Connor Wood, Pete Thomas, a few other Cali kids, Whitmer from my home town, etc).

How far down the offer line is Nick Montana ?

soon to be off the line, a lot of chatter is sayin he will be going to OSU

ND never seemed to show much interest in Nick, which is kind of interesting. I always heard he was better than his older brother. I guess with offers out to Gardner and Heaps, and some other kids who they are thinking about offering, he just wasn't a real big top priority. Regardless, he wouldn't even see playing time til someone down the road. Crist will have two years left after Clausen is gone, and I've heard some really great things about him.

That said, I really like Devin Gardner, and would love to have him committ.

I think he is suppose to be visiting there this weekend.....

I see use taking two QB's this year, neither of which will be Heaps. I think we take two quality guys, lower 4 stars this year and then go after the cream of the crop next year.

But, I do think we need two after not taking one last year.

I read on another site the staff has a slate of 5 other CA QBs identified for the possible next batch of offers to go out:

Thomas

Kasdorf

Rettig,

Montana

Bennett

Also Wood from Tx.

why is Cali the new cradle of QB's? cause these kids have that clarkson bum as a QB coach starting in 6th grade?

i'm sure there are a bunch of great QB's out west (and we've got 2 on the roster already)but I just don't want us missing on a QB from elsewhere with all the intangibles (a la B Quinn) because all these guys do their lil 7 on 7's all year round.

That being said, Crist does appear to be a Quinn clone, minus the muscles, so I'm probably complaining for no reason.

If anything, Texas is a bigger hotbed for QB talent. We've struggled making lasting inroads there, but Alford has a great reputation as a recruiter within the state.

I wouldn't worry about us ignoring other states. Remember, first two offers were to guys in Washington and Michigan. Its probably got more to do with a) big state population wise, b) lots of talent, and c) Polian and his inroads.

As for Nick Montana, its more of a mutual disinterest thing, it wasn't just Charlie being stuck up. I for one wouldn't want to compete against my brother at the same position (the McCarthy brothers are at opposite safety positions, for example, so they aren't in a position to create ill will with one over the other). Likewise, some kids wouldn't want to follow their father's footsteps, and make their own way as their own man. Its not a big deal, I wish Nick well wherever he goes.

Like Calves, I'm reading between the lines. It would appear that the staff isn't confident on Gardner either since we're starting to hear about other QB prospects. That is, unless CW became open to taking two quarterbacks this year.

The more offers that go out at QB, the more likely it will be that we get more than one signal caller.

I'd expect a few more QB offers in the near future - before the month is out.

and i'm ok with that. I'm not huge on Gardner at ND, but i would like it if he didnt' end up at michigan.
