i know it's early but this guy is probbly the one LB i'd really like to see ND land next year. ND has all ready offered but getting him out of texas is always tough. he's 6'3 220 lbs. and runs a 4.55 fourty and can flat out play ball. when i first saw his film the first thing i thought of was how much it reminded me of brian smiths film but Caleb has much better speed then Smith does. does anyone know if ND has a good shot with him or not cause he'd be a perfect replacement for brian smith when he leaves school.

Lavey plays for Celina, which is a very strong program year in and out bounceing between 2a and 3a, numerous state championships. The last High profile recruit they had was a db last name Lynn. If i remember corectly he signed with Penn State. So maybe there is a chance, and Yes this Kid can play.

thanks for the local input coaching. it's always appreciated.

First of all, Kapron Lewis-Moore, and Chris Stewart. Need any more reason for why we show up at Texas? Their table scraps are better than a lot of the "elite" in state prospects at Indiana. Heck, they produce more D1 starters at QB than anyone because of their passing leagues. Of our two Texans, one already is a starter, and the other will before his career is out. The point is, when we've gone there, we aren't wasting our time - we always get quality.

Second, Tony Alford has a great track record recruiting in the state. Give him a school with a higher profile than Louisville, and I'll imagine he lands some good talent. He is what we hired Haywood to do, typically bags 2-3 kids from Texas on an annual basis.

Third, this kid didn't grow up "hooked". We've got a pretty good shot at this kid.

Just because we haven't landed 4-5 kids there every year, doesn't mean we stop trying. Texas is WAY too good a hotbed for talent to simply give up on. Just look at some of the kids from Irish history that have come from Texas, and lemme know if you still think we should not bother there.

And as for a B. Smith analogy, a little different for a couple of reasons. Brian is more an outside guy that was forced inside due to depth issues, while Caley is a pure ILB guy, probably a little closer to the Mike role, plays a style similar to Toryan or Calabrese. The other is the speed/size thing. B. Smith had about 15 pounds on Caley. But as far as star rating, you're probably not far from it. High 3, low 4 is probably what you're looking at going into his season.

Calves,

Personally, I would like to see Brian Smith moved back outside. Do you think there's any chance of this happening this year?

I know the question was directed twords Calves, but.... I'd like to see one of the four pure inside guys get the job (Toryan, Calabrese, McDonald, Teo). I think we all had high hopes for Smith inside, but he finished with mixed results. I think the coaches will make an effort to get Smith back outside to his natural position the only problem being someone needs to step up from that group.

Another twist to this is what defence we will be running next year.

DJ, very true. Do you see Filer getting into the mix anywhere this year?

I think LB, WR, DL, and RB will be really fun to watch this whole spring and summer. I've haven't really experianced "loaded" positions like we have now, since following ND on the internet. It always seemed like we had one guy at each positon.

Personally, I really like Filer (heard that he beat Deion Walker in a foot race last week), he's really going to have to scratch and claw his way to a starting postion though. If we run a 3-4 I can seem him start at the Jack postion. If we run a 4-3 I'm not sure what he would play?

The other wrinkle is where Teo would play in the 3-4. I believe he said something along the lines of not wanting to play Mike in a 3-4 scheme because you're taking on linemen all day...

Really excited to see how the LB corp shakes out by the Nevada game and then again by the bowl game. Should be really fun see how these guys compete and how everything shakes out.

Brian was moved there pretty much out of necessity, not because we always wanted him there. Remember all of the rhetoric about Toryan? "Now or never"? After all that chatter before and during the spring, they moved Brian to ILB. In essence, Toryan didn't step it up enough to lock it down. You're spot on, in that the problem all along was depth.

Between a mega recruit in Te'o, some of the redshirts being in the mix in McDonald and possibly Posluszny (the latter is probably slated for the Jack LB spot instead of Mike, but Filer went from Jack to Sam when he showed up, so you never know), a late bloomer "Corey Mays" candidate in Toryan (you never say never), and Calabrese (I think he *shirts*, but thats just me), I'm guessing we stand a good chance of getting one of them to play well enough to allow Brian to slide back to where he's better suited.

I think there's a very good chance of it RB, its one of the first things I heard in the wake of Manti's decision.

If I had a hunch, maybe not day one, but by mid year you're looking at Manti firmly entrenched in the middle at Mike, Fleming and Neal splitting reps at the "DE/OLB" Will spot (which really is just a DE), and Filer and Brian rounding out the other two starting gigs. As is, Filer would be the Sam, but they were thinking Jack during his recruitment, so you could make a case for either kid playing a given spot, Jack or Sam, but the point is I'm betting they both start (maybe a little bit of Motta at Sam too, vs spread teams).

This is still a HUGE source of confusion.

Last year, we ran a 4-3 defense. No question, the alignment we saw was 4-3.

The thing that makes it slightly different is, we used 3-4 players in it. Hence, Charlie's "3-4 personnel" discussion a while back.

Fleming and Neal aren't you're typical 4-3 ends - lighter, shorter, have more coverage skills than a prototypical 4-3 end. Likewise, Ethan Johnson at 275 as a freshman is going to be bigger than your typical 4-3 end. He played with someone on either side of him - the "DT" position in the 4-3. Yet, because we use the "3-4 personnel", we call him a DE.

Its just verbiage. Don't over think what you saw on the field. When you saw Neal, Kuntz, Johnson, and Justin Brown line up with their hand planted in the ground, with Harrison, Crum Jr, and B. Smith standing up but close to the line of scrimage, you saw a 4-3 alignment. The only differences were that one DE spot has a guy with LB skills in Neal, and of the DT's was a little lighter and penetration driven than your average 4-3 tackle.

I don't see the staff going with different formations next year. Our BASE D will continue to be a 3-4 alignment. Now, if you remember Tenuta at GT, this year you might see some more shifting out of that 4-3 look before the snap goes off, but as far as personnel goes you're not going to see a whole lot thats different.

WOW! This is why I enjoy DD so much. Thanks for the insightful comments guys. Especially you Calves, it's nice to know that the fans here actually know a thing or two about football. Go Irish!

Island we here at DD thank you. Our guys try to bring the best possible for readers. I and others scoure the media to bring the most up to date news. Then it is our guys anallysing the deyails and breaking it down. I think we have the best as some pay sites sure are jealous. (Ahahahah) Me Bad.

This kid's new nickname from now on will be GRAVY!!

FYI, based on the presser going on today:

1. Tenuta is now officially the "Co-defensive coordinator", and will be up on the booth calling the plays in (Corwin still apparently has a heavy involvement in the game planning aspect during the week).

2. Corwin is the #2 to Charlie, something to the affect of assistant head coach.

3. A good chance that Charlie is up in the booth calling plays. Not official, probably going to play it by ear, but its not quite 50/50.

Translation?

Corwin is being groomed as a head coaching candidate, while Tenuta is slowly getting his hands on the D. Expect more of the Tenutan 4-3 influence in formations and playcalling, and more of Corwin as the rah rah guy on the field.

Sounds all good to me. Anything about the DL coach yet?

Thanks for the update!
