I know we have BY on board, but is he going to be coaching in the spring practices? Is that asking and expecting too much of him?

 

Seems strange that we have this open position hanging open for so long after College bowls, NFL playoffs and recruit signings.

I agree with you, I thought the DL coach would be announced by now. I know Weis is the guy who always seems to have a plan, but I also think he is a guy who puts all of his eggs into one basket and hopes it works out for the best. My bet is that he has put all of his eggs into one basket with Romeo and is hoping he will join the staff after his hip replacement surgery. Like many posters have alluded to, it seems that Weis wants Crennel to groom Byant Young for a year or two to take over the position. Who knows but this long wait definitely seems to piont in that direction.

i am still very pissed about this. charlie should have had stripling in tow a long time ago. He was a can't miss coach. I'd rather a coach who's proven he can devlop talent than recruit it at this point. Then recruiting takes care of itself when you see the product on the field.

 

i'm a constant charlie apologist but I'm not liking this at all. There better be a good reason for not hiring Stripling or someone comparable by now after it's been public knowledge that we offered Fickell weeks ago now (months ago?)

He is definitely known as a good defensive mind. Personally, I would love the hire, especially assuming it's for a year or two to get Byant Young established. I guess we'll have to wait it out and see.

I think the Crennel thing is retarded both because it's unlikely and b/c I don't think it's a good fit. Plus if Stripling was passed over simply because he isn't a great recruiter than why would Crennel be the answer? He's 61, he's spent his last 20 years in the NFL adn would not be keen on kissing 17 year olds' asses and flying all over the country to do so.

 

Plus, no recruit would expect him to be here for their entire 4 years.

Not to mention the fact he'd have to answer to both Jon Tenuta and Corwin Brown. No way.

i think its a good idea that cw has crennel coming on board to give the young fella some pointers , good move all coaches learn things from each other including charlie , so lets go withe flow this year . go irish

Honestly, I would be surprised if it were Romeo but if it was, I would definitely see it as a short term thing. I think the staff is very upfront with recruits and would let them know what's going on from the get go. If I were a DL recruit and knew I would spend a couple of years with Crennel, and four years with Bryant Young, I don't think I would be complaining. That's a lot of coaching experience and gamer experience combined there. Either way, it's pure speculation at this point so I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

Biggest deal to me is whether the coach can coach FUNDAMENTALS, and do so in a way that relates to kids.

 

Romeo has been out of the college game awhile... will he be able to relate and communicate these basics? BY can't just be a parrot for Crennel, that would be counterproductive and not give BY much credibility.

 

Your coach may need to demonstrate some of the concepts and ideas physically, i can't see 61 yr old coach doing this for us.

 

As for his brilliant defensive mind, that may be... but we need a DL coach, so either Tenuta and Corwin aren't doing it as DC & AHC for Defense... or Romeo is here to be DL Coach.

 

If it were Stripling... then we'd have a proven DL Coach, and BY could observe how it's done, and add his personal experiences.

 

I am concerned... and the DL members need a coach/mentor now. Spring practices and game is not so far off.

This is not necessarily true. CW is the king of giving round-a-bout answers.....and the people asking the questions are not know to drill him. If they ask him about it and he says "That is not resolved at this point" they will move on to the next question.

 

The only thing we are more than likely to find out about on Friday is 5th years coming back, and probably hearing Weis talk about Toma (since he couldn't on LIO day).

While it would be nice to have a DL coach in place, but they cannot do any coaching until spring practice, right. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think the coaches can have any practice/drill contact with players in the offseason. Yes the coaches can be there for lifting, but is there really THAT much coaching to be done right now?

Also, for the players, they can start to learn his thoughts and mentality, and look-up his history of, presumably, success with developing talent.

Agree that it is important to build chemistry with the players and coaching staff, but it seems like half of DD is in meltdown mode in this point and I just don't understand why right now.

 

That being said, I will be EXTREMELY upset if a DL coach is not in place well before spring practice.
