After looking at David Bruton's scouting report, I saw that they keep track of most (if not all) of college football players, so I looked up Jimmy's just for fun...

here's the 2nd rated QB out of 122 QB's in the 2011 Class. Second only to Sam Bradford who will most likely enter the 2010 draft.

I thought this was a pretty good read:

"University of Hawaii linebacker Adam Leonard calls Notre Dame quarterback Jimmy Clausen the best quarterback he has seen on film this season. Considering who the Warriors tussled with in early September, compliments don't get any bigger than that.

Hawaii opened its season with a game at Florida, quarterbacked by defending Heisman Trophy winner Tim Tebow. The junior recently finished third in this year's voting, but received more first-place votes than winner Sam Bradford of Oklahoma. "Tebow's a physical specimen," Leonard said. "He's got a strong arm. He runs the ball well and he plays great in that system.

But I would say as far as a pure quarterback — decision-making, looking off safeties and the arm strength — (Clausen) is unbelievable. "He's the only quarterback we've seen on film who from the opposite hash he can throw all the way to the other sideline. It jumps off the film when he throws."

the UNC game where he threw for over 400 yards and literally drove the team in SECONDS down to the opponents 7-yard line for the winning score on the road only to have floyd fumble? that game?

geez, ya coulda used the BC game as a much better example! ;-)

and let's re-iterate, he's a TRUE soph, whom, when he was great, BROKE RECORDS at ND, the most hallowed program in america. i'd call that more than "flashes of greatness."

and besides, my joke was about how sooo many on here and espn, et al *constantly* focus on JC's bad stuff while *rarely* talking about the good. in fact, it's curious to me how you pointed out (quite rightly) how ESPN twisted the fact that we FINALLY won a bowl game into a negative (in another thread) when, quite frankly, MANY on this board do the same thing about this program and it's players. seems like we want it both ways...

Yes...the UNC game where he threw 5, count them 5 interceptions. Without them, the game isn't even close. I was using that game as an example of what we DON'T want to see next year (ie throwing for a ton of yards, with a ton of mistakes that makes you lose the game). See BI....perfect example eh? ;)

Flashes of greatness, to me, means sometimes you do great things and sometimes you play average to poor. That perfectly describes Jimmy at this point. Not really sure where the argument is there. JC was FAR from dominant or even consistent this year.

And to your last point, the difference between what ESPN does and what we do on here is that ESPN has a nationally biased agenda they are fulfilling....where as we are just a bunch of schlubs jabbering about our favorite team. ;)

haha! LOL! good point...

and call it a taste difference but i'd rather have more UNC games than BC games... ;-)

Actually...I'd rather have neither! LOL.

Cough,Cough....2.....Cough,Cough.....and one really bad fumble

Regardless of what our opinion is of Jimmy right now (I personally dont think he has met expectations) I think we can all agree that next year SHOULD be a huge year for him. I expect a very big jump in stats, as mentioned above 32/11 sounds pretty reasonable. However, if he doesnt show improvement most notably between his ears then we could be in for a disappointing season. Ill say this, if Jimmy doesnt meet expectations next year, the team as a whole more then likely will not meet expectations.

Not so fast. If Jimmy does not meet expectations next year, Charlie has Crist. He will not hesitate to use him, and Jimmy knows this, as does Dayne.

I really, definately, hopefully, hope that Crist will push Clausen to the nth degree......Lets hope Crist will give Jimmy a nice jump start this season.

Jimmy's success will come if we can run the ball - Crist will perform no better if people are able to drop 7 into coverage on a regular basis.

Agreed DScott... we need credible 2nd option... if only for 3.5 yards!!!

I also have to agree with that, basically we need or oline to step and be who we thought they would be when they signed on....... ND pretty much as what one could call bottled up talent, Aldrigde, Allen, and Hughes haven't really had that many chances to shine. I can't imagine the affect a solid running game would have on Clausen and the WR's.......I have to say it would be really fun to watch that offense

In 2007 the team averaged about 70 yards rushing per game and this year they averaged about 105 yard (the numbers are in the ballpark). If they can improve half as much in this offseason as they did last offseason, that gets the team to around 120 yards a game. That's getting nearly respectable, what do you all think? Everyones a year older, new coaches and sense of urgency... who knows.

I'm gonna go out on the limb and say the '09 Irish are gonna be this year's '08 Alabama. Same winning tradition, same funk over the past decade or so...except we don't lose in our BCS Bowl ;)

I think it needs to be in the 150 - 175 per game range to truly unlock the potential of this offense. Oh...and some much better decision making on JC's part.

Man, that'd be nice to put up those kind of numbers and still have the passing game we are capable of.

Agreed about the running game... For the weapons ND had in the air (Claussen, Floyd, Tate, and Rudolph), I don't understand how we didn't run over 150 yards a game. I am a firm believer that in football, all the aspects are intertwined. If the running game improves, the passing game will benefit and our time of possession will improve and will help our defense. I think ND is a running game away from being special.
