his offensive staff and gets a new strength coach? Would that be good enough for another year? IMHO I would say yes. Otherwise, it is time to go fishing.

If CW replaces the offensive coaching staff and the S&C coach, I think ND is immediately a 10 win team.

If he replaces all of the above +the special teams and DLine coaches (basically everyone outside of CB and JT) then ND is a legit NC contender.....NEXT YEAR.

We have the talent.....we do not have the coaching.

This is my biggest fear. We are all searching for the missing link to this team, and popular opinion is that by replacing a couple position coaches we can contend for the NC. I just don't see that.

A team takes on the personality of its coach. Perfect example is Alabama. Hard hitting, physical, confident. Another is USC--playing loose, having fun, expecting to win, fast paced. Another is Jim Tressel--rehearsed, enduring, tireless, patient, etc. There are things about a head coach that trickle down to the players in so many ways--meetings, speeches, press conferences, pre-game talks, game planning even body language. I don't see a couple of position coaches changing the culture of the team enough to turn us into a 11-12 win team.

I hope if that is what happens that I am proven to be wrong.

I wouldn't get my hopes up like that if I were you. Our talent is vastly better than it has been, but they still aren't going to go from a 6-6 to title contending team; we don't have the luxury of adding juco's to fill gaps like most schools do. Remember, from next year's offense, only Aldridge, Young, and Olsen finish their eligibility. I will not be using the "young excuse" next year, but a majority of guys still have more time. A 9-10 win season is good progress.

I completely agree. A prime example is Alabama. They were a 6-5 or 6-6 regular season team last year (like we are), but are able to obtain the JC tranfers. This one of the main crticisms of our administration, not letting the coaches fill the gaps with those guys. If we were able to do this, I think regardless of coaching changes or not, we MIGHT be able to contend for a title next year. But since we can't ... i would very happy with a 9-3 season and a solid Cotton, Outback, or Gator Bowl victory.

We need Dayne Crist to step up and outshine Jimmy. Jimmy isn't the best. he is still making high school mistakes.

Im glad to see someone come out and say this. One of many mistakes charlie made was anointing JC the starter and savior before he even stepped on campus. Whoever is the coach next year i think there should be an open QB competition, even if Christ doesnt win it at the very least hoefeully he will push JC and that will ultimately make him better. I feel this is more likely to happen with a new coach bc when a new staff comes in the players should know that they will need to show them what they can do, its less likely to happen with charlie because we all know he loves his QB's and he had already lined Jimmy up as the next Brady and Quinn and i dont see him turning his back on his golden boy now even though he has clearly regressed tremendously like the rest of the offense during the ugly 2-5 finish down the stretch.

Whoops sorry i said Christ and I meant Crist. In regards to bringing in a few new assistant coaches I find it hard to believe that 3 or 4 new assistant coaches would turn this team from a 6 win team to a 10+ win team. I wish i was as optimistic as some of you but i find it hard to believe that although a few coaching changes could make the team better, it wont make them THAT much better. I agree though that If charlie sticks around these types of changes need to be made.

My main worry with JC is with his head. Does he have the mental toughness to pick the team up when he is having a bad day? Can he deal with Weis' Parcellsian style? Parcells tended to chew up and spit out qb's until he found one that could take his style, kind of like Bobby Knight and star players. JC has shown flashes of brilliance and clearly has the physical abilities to be very good, even if he's a little shorter than ideal. His tendency to run backwards and spin around, thereby turning his back on the play absolutely has to stop. That is not a normal thing, though, so I'm not sure if he will "mature out of it." I still like the guy and am thrilled we have him. If he can come good, we will be in very good shape for the next two years.

this is a good post. i've seen you post something similar to this before. i'm not sure powlus is giving him the best instruction. i was directly behind them at the pitt game and i mean about 15 feet. his approach seemed very collegial, almost deferential, not instructional, which really bothered me considering what was starting to transpire on the field.............

I believe the only thing keeping us from being elite right now is our line play, and our attitude.

I believe Jimmy's "problems" are easily correctable, and are directly related to our line. Jimmy is running scared out there because he has had his ass handed to him on a platter for 2 years. If we are able to get a new o-line coach that can make our line average, Jimmy will shine.

Our D would be sick right now if our d-line did anything. In our system, our d-line should be eating up blocks freeing up our LBs to make plays. Right now, our d-line does next to nothing.....so our LBs eat the blocks, and our safeties end up getting 500000 tackles a game. Again, a new line coach probably fixes this immediately.

Our attitude has to be learned....it cannot be taught. Look at the USC game as an example. CW has pushed his players to be more enthusiastic....to show more fire. When we were down by 30+ points, we have players yapping after committing a penalty.....and the USC guy did what he should have done. He pointed at the scoreboard.

Our players need to win some games that they shouldn't. They need to actually throw a team around (like we have been thrown around for 2+ years) to get that attitude. They need to learn to win.

Changing our line coaches, and our S&C coach puts us very close to where we want to be.

I would be not just satisfied but excited about next year if:

Latina goes

Mendoza goes:replace with proven S&C guy. Hell just rehire the S&C guy that left for Florida.

Haywood goes or is demoted to solely rb coach

Polian becomes recruiting coordinator and we find Special Teams veteran coach.

CW becomes offensive coordinatoor

I agree with you will mummy. That is what I want. People want to drop CW, but he took Ty's talent to 2 BCS games. He is a good coach. His assistant's are the problem. Fix both the o line and d line and this team is alot better in a hurry.

I apologize if this comes off rude but didn't Rick Minter technically help take us to two BCS bowls just by being affiliated with the program when we went? I won't even get started on whether we should or should not have been in the bowls, that's another conversation. But, the same can be said for Latina, Mendoza, et al... they were here for those BCS bowls but now some are saying we can't win with them while others say new assistants won't make that much of a difference. I do not disagree with you, I'm just playing devil's advocate.

I think we, as fans, are in a good spot if at least *something* happens that does not entail retaining the line coach(es), the S&C coach, and possibly Polian. If we get a new coach, those will all be brought in anew anyway. If Weis is given the ultimatum of 10 wins next year or you're out, he will have to drastically change the make up of his coaching staff to make that happen. If he doesn't recognize that, he's certainly not cut out for this gig. If he is, then there is some hope. So, in summary, either no Weis next year or all new assistants (outside of Brown/Tenuta, I want Brown to succeed but I hope he doesn't take the EMU job...) to right the ship. Add some passion from Weis and we really can be a good team. If not, we'll have a full 12 months to court the appropriate replacement HC.

A GOOD head coach would see that his assistants are not getting the job done. Has Weis done that? End of story.

haywood never impressed me. handing the ball off 6 yards in the backfield to a single setback while the lanes are closing, has never gotten it done

This sort of thing didnt change though after weis resumed calling the plays. Does anyone think that the offense changed a whole lot after weis took the play calling back? I sure dont. It seemed like the offesne continued to regress no matter who was calling the plays. What happened to the schematic advantage?

It seemed to me that we had the proper plays called for the situation moreso when Weis was calling versus Haywood. I mean, Haywood was SOOOO far off that you could recognize the difference. The offense just failed to execute when Weis was calling the players. There were times that CW made bad calls, too, but nothing like Haywood's crappiness.
