An article that discusses our supposed recruiting disadvantage? Are we really at a disadvantage?

The players that we have signed over the last few years have been in the upper level of talent....however, we have missed some vital guys at vital positions.

 

One of the reasons recruiting rankings are worthless is because it is possible for a team to finish in the top 2 or 3 every year, and never recruit a position of need. In theory you could recruit nothing but WRs and CBs, and end up being the number 1 class year in and year out.....but since you never got a QB or a Line, your team is waaaaay behind and will stink.

 

ND has done very well recruiting, and the guys that we have are not lacking in talent. However, we have missed out on areas of need, and I think we are behind in these areas. My guess is that 80% of our team is at the Florida / USC / OSU level, but 20% is middle of the pack at best.....and that 20% is in KEY areas.

I have said it many many times. The game has passed the Irish up. We are slow and our skill positions are not numerous.

 

Penn State is a perfect example of keeping up with the times. Friggen Paterno is running the spread.

Man, I can't even talk about this stuff anymore. Let's just see how we wind up against USC and then let Jack do his job on Monday. My gut feeling is that CW, Tenuta, Brown and Polian stay. The rest will be cleaned out.

i agree. if you look at NDs talent they'll have next year in '09 (specially on offense) they are right there along side USC in talent IMO. the only probblem is CW can't seem to get his highly regarded recriutes to play up to their level. it's not a talent problem its a coaching problem.

The guys we signed recently were recruited by everybody. We need to coach them up, simple as that

polian is as lousy as the rest. he can recruit, he just can't coach............

CW must stay, so should Tenuta, and Corwin. After that, clean house. I think our talent level is good and improving, but we have no depth. I think our line is still a huge cause of Jimmy's problems, the d line does not have enough studs to make a difference. Maybe in a year or two Ethan and Fleming will be that but as for now our d ends get no pressure. Ian is all we have on the line now. That is why the sacks aren't mounting up under Tenuta's defense, and why our safeties are our leading tacklers. Also, our strength coach has to go. When you look at the elite programs, their linemen on both sides of the ball look like huge men, while our's are still lanky college kids. If they were bigger and stronger to make a difference at the line, then our skilled players on each side would make a difference.

There is an article on ESPN claiming that the only reason we have hauled in good recruiting classes is because players recruited by ND get better star ratings from scout and rivals.......not because theyre actually good. Dont we usually compete with OSU, USC, and UF for most of our players? Unbelievable.

I'm hoping one day we are able to recruit athletes with that 'dynamic' speed we so often here about, bring some to Notre Dame already!.

are you saying our special teams isnt better overall? outside of the FG problem we had early. We're tops in the nation for kick coverage.

the guys at ESPN have stated that they don't rate the ND classes so high for one reason. When charlie walks into a school and has to leave because the transcripts are not up to par with ND, Urban and Petey boy walk in right behind and get that same kid.

 

We have good athletes that are not being coached. We lack the mean ass son of a beech on the DL that makes plays or the LB that will tear your head off. We have thinkers on the field, not guys with instinct.
