Double_Domer
So we play Army, we play Air Force, we play Navy... From a Canadian who has always wondered...why don't the Marines have a team? I believe that technically the Marines are administratively part of the Navy branch, but they kick so much a*** the joint chiefs were too scared to tell them they weren't a separate and distinct branch all by themselves...so they operate independently

Guest SirJohn
MRINE'S are a seperate brance OF THE NAVY. Usually a Navy grad will decide upon USMC or Navy. So those two are bundled for life. There is no seperation from Navy but oft times Marines are not respected for this same "seperation." As President Harry Truman once said disrespecting the Corps,"the Marien's are nothing but Navy's police force." That's unfair to all that put on a uniform. We all can't be StS, Airborne, or Greeen berate. There are "bragging rights" wich is sad among the services. My dauther is USAF second tour so far to Iraq in USAF and I get tired of defending the Air Force as a pansy group. Without USAF your not getting into action, Pal . We all have our Military job. Just do it, she's served and is serving. I never know who goes into Harms Way, but wish them all well. Chat all this up at vet centers over a beer when you get returned from deployment. Guest irishrick
• Secretary of the Navy: The civilian head of the Navy, the secretary is appointed by the president with Senate approval and is responsible for recruiting, organizing, supplying, equipping, training and mobilizing naval forces. • Chief of Naval Operations: The CNO is the senior military officer of the United States Navy and is a four-star admiral. A member of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, he is responsible to the Secretary of the Navy for the command of naval forces and is the principal naval adviser to the president. • Commandant of the Marine Corps: The CMC reports to the Sectary of the Navy and is the top uniformed member of the Marine Corps. He sits on the Joint Chiefs of Staff and is responsible for the general readiness of the U.S. Marine Corps. i hope this will clear up any missunderstanding, . FlyinIrish
SirJohn I just wanted to let you know that I happen to have been in the Air Force for the last 10 years and I'm a veteran of four deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan. Tell your daughter that I'll be praying for her and wish her Godspeed in her mission. As for the the Navy and Marine Corp, I can elaborate a little bit. They are two separate services, the Marine Corp though, due to the "aquatic" nature of its mission, which is to attack from the sea, falls under the Department of the Navy. They have a Service Chief who serves on the Joint Chiefs staff, but instead of separate Chief of Staff of the Marine Corp, they have the Commandant of the Marine Corp. Graduates of the Naval Academy do have the option to receive a commission into the Marine Corp, but the only reason that they do that is because of the Marine Corps placement into the department of the Navy. Some advice to everyone on this board... if you run into a Marine, please for the sake of your health, do not accuse them of being part of the Navy. mcdougal93
Army guy here joining this conversation and saying that Marines are part of the Navy but they act as separate because they see themselves as the fighting force that "get off the boats" to storm beach heads, conduct raids, etc. Navy of course does it's share of fighting and they have the SEALS and other operational units. One guy who is Navy but is considered to be part of the Marines is the Navy Corpsman or the medic. I work contracts here with the Navy in the San Diego area and will tell you the the Marines have nothing but respect for the Navy copsman because he is in the action and takes care of "his" marines. These guys have historically been some of the most decorated veterans in battle. Nothing but respect for Navy and Marines but having served in the army for more than eight years, I can tell you that neither of them (sailors or marines) would qualify or even hack it in the ARMY. I'm gonna hear it from semperfi! Edited November 18, 2008 by mcdougal93

Donjuan
As a Naval officer is leaving the bathroom, a Marine confronts him and states that "in the Marines, they teach you to wash your hands after leaving the bathroom". Which then the Naval officer rebuts and says that "in the Navy, they teach us not to piss on our hands"
IrishKevin
Or more importantly, why isn't there a Coast Guard team? The Coast Guard is a branch of the DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION! Not a department of the defense. Navy guy talking here and yes, I have gotten in a couple of scrapes because I knew the answer to this... A lot of our variable boarding search and seizure missions in the Gulf were joint efforts between us and the CG. The security guards of H20.
