Franco
sorry sully, he ain't too far off.............. I understand that our record only indicates 5 wins to 4 losses. But, unlike last year, in 3 of those losses, we weren't blown out. We were right in it till the very last minute. Sorry, but I'm gonna have to disagree with you and Mr. Mark May

GeorgiaIrishFanChuck
c'mon guys. We are better. Do you recall losing to Purdue last year? We've been in all the games this year. The turnovers need to be addressed and the field goal kicking needs to be addressed. The other thing that will come as our team matures is we need to become smarter. Both players and coaches. Our coaches and players have talent but they need to become cold hearted smarter. By that I mean we have guys like Tate and Clausen who want to make plays. As they mature, and they become cold hearted winners. They will know there is a time to take a fair catch and accept the great field position. Tate needs to leave his heart behind in that case and learn to be a winner. There will plenty of occasions when the other team outkicks his punt coverage where Tate will get to show his heart and talent. Clausen will learn that you can coldly take the open underneath route until the other team becomes frustrated and tries to jump the underneath route and then destroy them with the long pass. Harrison and Brian Smith will learn that cheap/late hits are for losers. I believe the great coaches will play the smart football players in front of the talented players until the talent players could prove they would play smart. There was a reason Greise took all those underneath routes and then went undefeated. Weis need to become cold hearted too. When the right thing to do is kick the field gozl or punt instead of going for it on 4th down, he needs to do that. I believe this is the next step in the development of this team. But we are better without a doubt ... And BTW Mark May knows nothing about ND other than he doesn't like them. Don't pay any attention to him. irishwavend
This is a ridiculous conversation. Saying we aren't any better than last year is like a child saying the boogeyman is under his bed. It's assinine and not worth more than a mere glance, and a yeah, yeah, get to bed. The fact that this conversation made it past one post is appalling. Why did it make that far? Because somebody actually thinks we aren't that much better... Yeah, yeah, get to bed and let the grownups worry about the program. It is amazing the rhetoric that's being thrown around irresponsibly and by people who think they can do a better job, but have no real understanding of the game. Yes, I was pissed during BC, but at least I can regain some rationality once the game is over. Again, I say, if you are going to make a ridiculous assessment, then give us some real solutions. Until then, try to keep the superficial comments to a minimum until you have some real answers. My answer: Keep Charlie, because we have to remember, we have sophomores and freshmen everywhere. Even Brey says he prefers a transfer over a kid who is coming in straight out of high school, because a junior has two years under his belt versus the freshman. The guy leading the charge hasn't even seen 2 full seasons, yet. 1 season was spent on his back 3/4 of the time. When we are awesome next year, i want to go back through all of these ridiculous posts and repost them on the front page. Maybe we should have an accountability section. If I am wrong, I will gladly have my posts re-posted. Talking in an irrational and irresponsible manner about this team is going to do nothing for us, though. Let's think about what we are saying and be constructive. Saying we aren't any better than last year shows a real lack of thought process. IrishGuy
You are missing the point. Mark said ND is not MUCh better than last year. That is the best you will get out of him.....he is acknowledging that we are better than last year. You can't expect Mark May of all people to come out and say he thinks we are leaps and bounds better.

irishwavend
http://rivals.yahoo.com/ncaa/football/news?slug=ap-notredame-weis&prov=ap&type=lgns Tom Coyne's article is idiotic. Last year's schedule was easy? Most of the teams we played were at the top of their game. I was surprised we won as many as we did. Additionally, I am tired of this stupid assumption that CW has had 4 classes. Aren't these guys supposed to know a thing or two about recruiting, since it is a huge element of football? Charlie has had 3 classes. Again, recruiting takes more than a year. Merely closing the deal doesn't mean you did the work (or lack of work) to be credited with the recruiting class of your predecessor. What ticks me off is that writers use that line as a knock to Charlie when the reality is that it should be a knock to their inability to treat the facts properly. Completely biased reporting simply to get a story...

jfschellcrna
may said the team isn't that much better than they were last year. i said he is not that far off. nobody here said they weren't better. read what i'm saying before you flip your blue and gold, kool-aid drinkin' lid. nobody loves this team anymore than i do, but vegas tells the truth. you bet against them often?? we are a 3 point favorite. we should be a 14 point minimum against inferior talent. right now our players exhibit great potential, our coaches, not so much........ I am with you JFS. You and I can drink our brand of Kool-Aid. It is called reality soup. With the so-called talent pool ND has gotten in the past two years, Navy should not be able to stay on the field with us. No disrespect meant to the Navy boys and the heart they exhibit. Thanks to all of them for volunteering so we can bitch and moan about our Irish in Freedom.
chirodomer
Before everyone jumps off a cliff or lays on a sword, just remember, we have a lot of talent coming in next year and ........our guys will be a year more mature physically. Agreed! So many people just can't take a step back and objectively critique their team. It is what it is and some just won't admit it even up until CW is walking out the door when and if that time comes. I hope I'm wrong and CW turns it around, but I just haven't seen enough to convince me he is the guy.

You got that right. The coaches arent showing much right now. They better fix it quick or Charlie's going to have grill marks on his big butt. One things for sure, he wont give up trying. Thats why I like the guy. He's still not there yet in the coaching department.
irishwavend
And the spread in Vegas has never been wrong...? Navy is no slouch. They are down this year, though, so we won't have a problem. Also, we have something we didn't have last year - an OFFENSE. The Defense is playing well, too. Special teams is better than last year. Isn't "much" better? We are a lot better than we were last year. We couldn't get any worse than we were last year. We can't win a national title this year, but we are competing with some good teams. We are losing those games, though, because we're young. That's what young teams do. You guys need to take off the "Unrealistic glasses." You, like every unrealistic ND fan, expect National Titles every year. That simply isn't going to happen when you're rebuilding. To say we aren't "much" better than last year is almost as ridiculous as saying we are as bad as last year. We didn't compete last year. We were in tight games with INCREDIBLY crappy teams. This year if you take a superficial look and simply look at the results of our schedule, we have competed in every game, even BC. If we hadn't turned the ball over as much as we did, we were in that game. In the middle of the field we moved the ball well. We just hosed it up when we had an opportunity to do more. Last year, turnovers weren't the problem. Sacks, the inability to move the ball, the inability to put together a drive, then inability to play... THOSE were the problems. We couldn't even play football last year. This year, we're playing! We're competing. And, to think we are going to lose to navy is acting like Chicken Little. Yeah, we lost last year, but we're better this year. But, the sky is falling because there are so many of our fans that have NO fortitude and no patience. It's only representative of the American mentality. At the first sign of something bad we run around like chickens with our heads cut off. Sit back relax and have a beer. Do SOMETHING to calm down. Wait until the season ends. We still have recruits considering this school. A little positive attitude in our fanbase would certainly help. Instead, the staff not only has to fight the general fight for recruits, but now they have to fight against a disgruntled fanbase. From the fans who can see the big picture, I want to say thanks for making our recruiting tougher.
