Golden in the Wildcat

Recommended Posts

Not that I would ever advocate taking one of the nation's top young quarterbacks out of the lineup, but just for a minute picture this:

2 Tight set, Golden tate in a short shotgun, Aldridge to his right, Armando split wide to his left in the backfield. Golden begins the snap count, Armando starts in motion behind him and he snaps the ball, fakes the handoff to Aldridge inside and then does his thing by either following a blocking Aldridge, running to the outside, or pitching to Allen who is already reaching top speed.

Like I said, I would NEVER advocate this being used in any game in question, but it's kind of fun to think about in an Xbox NCAA2009 kind of way. I just love when the ball comes Golden's way. It might be interesting to throw in there for one series in the Syracuse game to give the Trojans something to think about.

I would rather see Golden getting the ball in a more traditional manner....like end arounds, WR screens, and coming in to the backfield as a RB a couple times.

Golden is a great talent, but I do not like the idea of going wildcat just to give him the ball.

We have too many weapons right now to start going the gimmicky route. If we could just start executing and calling a few more interesting plays....I would be happy.

I don't think it's a bad idea. It gets one more blocker in for us and the ball in one of our best playmaker's hands.

It also spices things up. Gimmiks work a lot, especially in college. We don't have to stick to a "pro-style" offense on every play to be successful.

And, if you didn't watch the Pitt game, they pretty much kicked our butt with it all night. Why they got away from it in OT, I have no idea. Cuz they could have run that three or four times and we couldn't have stopped them and it would have been over in the first OT.

i like the idea of golden in the wildcat but i agree lets start exicuting before we start going with these wild plays. has ND even tried a WR screen with tate yet this year. tate is a baseball player so why not a reverse pass to floyd or something. all ND needs is a solid running game and consistancy through out the game.

People need to get over their aversion to "gimmick" plays. We need to get the ball in the hands of our play makers, period. After Pitt gouged us all day with the wildcat I find it hard to say that it wouldn't be a good idea to at least give it a shot. Hell, it even works in the NFL. I just want to win, end rant.

Difference....Pitt has 1 playmaker and ND has several.

Why limit yourself to a formation that is only going to give 1 guy a chance? Our best chance to win is when Jimmy is under center.

Are we still talking about the same team who runs the same running play out of the I formation every game?
