Well, I'd like to welcome Donjuan and Fanatic to the viewing of this thread first off. I quickly calculated there being an absolute zero chance that they wouldn't check this thread out. Back to topic...
There is a bit of a change going on in the local watering hole mentality around here and it's certainly for the better. We've had the Ol' regular joints like Between the Buns, Corby's, Coaches/The Sports Book/Main St Pub et. But I've always wondered why, in the name of everything that is right and holy, hasn't SB/Mish/Granger had an explosion of Irish bars? To me it all seemed so obvious with ND being the main attraction in town. About 5-7 years ago we started to see this actually start to come to fruition. A great little place downtown opened up called Fiddler's Hearth. It's a traditional Irish Pub with great food, great beer, great atmosphere and authentic Irish music played live at least 3-4 nights a week. Next to open a few years later was Sean O'Casey's Irish Pub in the Marriott downtown. One of the best $10 beers I've ever had. But then things got stagnant again on the Irish Pub themes...until now.
Notre Dame is building a mega shopping, living, parking, eating, drinking area south of campus at an estimated cost pushing a quarter of a billion dollars. Undoubtedly football tickets will push $70 a piece next year to fund such expenditures....but that's a conversation for another thread. When done, that developement will be home to a great authentic Irish joint called Kildare's Irish Pub. I've been to one of these in other cities and they are great. You can check out there site at www.kildarespub.com
Also coming soon to the NE suburbs known as Granger, IN is another great chain of traditional Irish Pub called Molly Brannigan's. You can see pics of their other restaraunts at www.mollybrannigans.com/
I have a feeling that the success of these two places will spawn more growth in the Irish themed bar scene and more specifically I expect that growth to be along Eddy St where ND is building it's new project. I'd open one myself, but I've seen friends venture down the restaraunt/bar franchise scene before and I wouldn't wish that misery upon anyone. I've never seen an industry where you can spend THAT much time working and never make any money. Anyway, in summary, the 09' football season should be rewarding for both our football team...and our palates.
