The Grease
Just wanted to point out Matt Barkley's (A.K.A the Gatorade Player of the Year last year) stats so far this year: 52% Completion 12 Touchdowns 11 Interceptions Let's just say that he is struggling this year. He has a great arm, no doubt, but it will be interesting to see how he does at SC. Having said that, do you guys think he will lose his number 1 spot atop the rankings? Will he be National Gatorade Player of the Year again even with his stats?
blarney_stank
Good question grease. I for one think he will be a very good college QB but should not be the #1 recruit in the country. He should be a 5 star but not #1 with the way he has performed thus far. We have to remember, HS teams can be very volatile and affected significantly by graduation and injuries. I'm not sure that is what is happening with him but it could be a reason for the decline in production.

Their only good players, besides Barkley of course, are a soph WR and a junior OL who has been injured. Their defense is horrible which has forced them to play from behind a lot this year. Matt is trying to force too many throws to get his team back in the game. He probably shouldn't be the #1 ranked player thus far, but the season isn't over yet so it remains to be seen if he can make better decisions. All of the rankings are pretty much useless until the Army All American and Under Armor Game practices where the rankings are pretty much cemented
irishziggy
not even the best QB in the nation let alone best player. Gilbert's #
TorontoCroatian
once reggie is forced to testify (isn't that coming up soon???) it will all come crumbling down...

irishziggy
we'll find out at the UA game practices exactly Barkely is the best practice QB in the nation. Congrats. The kid is still going to be a stud, but not for a few years.
Guest Qwertyy
Looking back at the film of Clausen in HS I think he was a more consistant passer from his junior and senior film. Barkley is great but I dont think he should hold his spot with his poor numbers. Clausen droppedwith no real reason in either scout or rivals i cant remember. And now with Barkley there is an actual reason and he is still the number 1 player in the country

I love how you are totally ignoring his production last season as though it never happened
irishziggy
when u have the talent around u, it's easy. like everyone said, all the seniors graduated and now it's all on him. Gilbert's the only D-1 talent on his team and he's shining.

Donjuan
Rivals seems to partially agree with you Ziggy. They suggest that his weak offensive line play is hurting his numbers, but that he's also making poor decisions--albeit he's still number one, for now--. I would think if he continues this way, he will drop in rank. But we all know that top 50 are pretty much the same. Rarely is there a huge disparity between 1-50. I'm going to speculate that he won't finish #1. By then Bryce Brown will probably have won the presidency and starting his world-take over tour--in other words, he's destined for recruiting ranking gold. chirodomer
The nice part is that he has a college scholarship and if he's diligent then he will graduate and get a job after he finishes his football days. Hey, I love college football but the cold hard facts are that NFL players have a short playing life with unguaranteed contracts. Make sure you study hard boys! Guest IrishCT
We know one thing, he aint no Jimmy Clausen. Not in highschool anyways, Jimmy wouldve been torched if he had those stats, hes still a top 15 player but not #1 overrall. Hes still a great talent, great arm, but I dont think he is someone you can build your team around and I dont think that offense at USC is really all that QB friendly. IrishGuy
I think the point here is that Matt is having a crappy year. It is not that he is going to be crappy, he just isn't deserving of the #1-recruit-in-the-nation-5 star-status. He will be fine once he gets to USC. He will have several years to learn the system, and won't have to worry about being without talent. I am by no means a recruiting expert, but Matt is not the best QB in the nation right now......and is no where near the top player. I am not saying that because he is a USC commit. I am saying this because it is fact. He may have potential, but is just not that good right now.
