My College Football HOF Moment

While in Southbend for the Purdue game, my friend and I decided to visit the College Football HOF. While meandering around reminiscing of the past, we came across a sectioned off area, which offered visitors a chance to kick/throw/block--sort of a mini training facility.

While atttempting to throw--over an out-stretched dummy's arms simulating game action--we noticed Purdue's football team making their way in.

That's when we decided to head on over to the field goal unit to showcase our skills in front of the Boilermakers. As I set up the ball on the tee, I quickly thought about how I was going to be able to kick it through wearing my flip-flops. I was about to bail on the attempt until I looked over and saw their whole team was watching

It was gametime. As I took off my right flip-flop, I mentally prapared myself like my old soccer days before a penalty kick. I took three steps back, and three to the left--a few chuckles could be heard from the team as I tried to seem collegiate.

One...two...three--boom. Straight down the middle of the posts with plenty of air. As I turned around, it seemed as though the whole Purdue team was sizing me up. But not for the kick, but rather my toe which had been broken in the process. I hobbled back and put my flip-flop back on, not really feeling pain then, but pride as I felt I represented Southbenders well. It's my pinky toe, and I gladly gave it up for that kick. What's even more strange--or dumb, I went back and tried another after further encouragement from my buddy.--Wide left after compensating for my broken toe. But still not too shabby IMO. ;)

I'm not sure why I did it, but it lead to a win the next day--I think. So I figure we have 8 more games left, and I have 9 more toes. Which one should I wrap or spare?? :-D

I figured someone would ask this!! :D For penalty kicks, a style to keep the ball low and direct without effecting the velocity, is to kick it with your toes bent downwards, making contact with the top of your foot. Using a tee helps to elevate with this style and keeps the accuracy. Since I have no lift on my side-footed kick--I have soccer lift but not 10 foot goal post lift--, I toed it--bent downward to prevent a break--and had success--albeit I still managed to break my toe. It's turned a really crazy-yellow and purple color today, but that could have been all of the walking on campus. :-D

LMAO.

Great explanation Don, now I get it.

And the toe looks very nice.

Is that a tan line on your foot too?

I guess you do like rocking the flip-flops.

That's usually something I only see in beach or river communities. :)

I live on a beach so I'm always wearing flip flops around. :-D Those damn zebra muxcles will slice up your foot in a hurry unless you take preventative action.

I really hope Brandon Walker gains confidence. I think he could be a good kicker if he could just get his head out of his a$$. :D Maybe he's kicking with the wrong foot like Subway Alum suggests. Wouldn't that suck, he's supposed to be a righty and he doesn't even know it. ;)

DJ, i just noticed from your picture that your left leg wasn't in the correct position , had it been forward approx 4 more inches and the foot straight, you would have had a perfect field goal.AND YOU WOULD NOW BE KICKING FOR THE IRISH . Ha ha. next time try it , keep your arms extended level as this will make the ball go pretty accurate. have fun ha LOL

I just noticed this thread...guess I'm late to the party. First of all, DJ...I had no idea that you broke your toe on that little tykes set up they have there. I thought you were outside where they have the real goal posts. Second of all...I am not going to accept your broken toe as an excuse for your lack of Rock Band 2 skills.

BTW...nice book.
