Welcome to the domain buffalo. I am not sure. I was wondering myself why we were not running to the right more. That's 1/3rd of our running options. But what was called was called and perhaps I know nothing about injuries or practice tapes. The thing is if I am seeing it in an arm chair shure as blazes a coach in the skybox sees it.

Well, Hughes didn't look 100% after that nasty play by the goal line where he twisted his ankle. He wasn't cutting well off his right foot and yet we still didn't get JA in there. That was what was suprising to me. I thought for sure there was more too it.

+1

I was scratching my head on that one as well.

I just can't swallow him being 3rd on the depth chart.....well "technically" 3rd third. Since CW did not play a 3rd back, Jonas might be 3rd for all I know.

I am starting to think JA's knee injury might have been a career ender. At least, the knee may be what has kept him from showing his 5 star ability, and is what is causing his plummet to the bottom of the depth chart.

Aldridge is 34 right? He's in this 9/4 practice video within the first couple of seconds going through warm ups.

The question still is why didn't he play? I hope it's because Weis has something up his sleeve for this week's game. Personally, I thought the offense was boring through the first 3 quarters. Obviously the Irish would've had more points on the board had there not been the stupid mistakes. They turned it on when they needed. It's a damn good thing for the strip on the goal line.

kinda off topic, but does anyone else get really annoyed that on 3rd and 1 we try to run it up the gut everytime? perfect example in 3rd quarter i believe everyone knew the ball was going to hughes up the middle, and then sdsu stuffs him for three yard loss....

I get annoyed when it's 3rd and one and we run it up the middle with a single back formation. We need to use the I formation more on short yardage and goal line plays. I don't mind sticking with the run on 3rd and short as long as you're winning the battle upfront.

I get annoyed when we have a FB that can bench press a damn car, but he isn't used on the up the gut plays.

If we aren't going to use them....why recruit them?

Aldridge frankly isn't that good. Maybe its the knee injuries. Might also be that he was simply overrated coming out of HS. He never ran with authority last year, and had one memorable run vs. Michigan State, where he was caught from behind. Other than that, can't say I was impressed.

This isn't too big of a shock to me. Just remember how during the spring game, Hughes got the ball a lot, Allen 2nd, then Aldridge got by far the least amount of touches with like six token carries. I think this is simply James being beaten out by other guys, because the injuries gave us PLENTY of opportunity to get him in there. Not buying this flow of the game business.

I dont know about "over rated." but for power running he is big and strong, and if hughes is our guy for power back then why not put in JA and not risk any real injury to hughes??? JA is better than the cal poly rb. so give him a try. I tend to believe that CW was telling the truth about hughes/AA and the hurry-up O, because after both AA and hughes gave us scares it would only make sense to not risk it unless you had to...and the game was in question w/ the only thing working was the hurry-up.

More thoughts (can't sleep).

For all the descriptions about James could be, what his recruiting hype entailed, about the 5 star rating that means nothing as soon as they start playing real live CFB, all that has boiled down to in 2+ years in South Bend is 3.4. Thats his YPC from both freshman and sophomore seasons.

I do agree that he should have at least seen the field for a few carries. Don't want to abuse Hughes' ankle after getting tweeked like that. But its obvious that the staff isn't as high on him as Allen/Hughes. With how badly things were going, it wasn't like the staff had the luxury of hiding their playmakers.

Bottom line, you can make all the excuses you want for why a guy doesn't get in, but play makers find a way to get on the field, and when they do they make the most of it. Heck, even late in the game when we had a one point lead and tried to kill the clock, no Aldridge.

Allen and Hughes get hurt? Aldridge sits. Kamara gets hurt? Tate gets in there, and takes over the game in the 2nd half. Just sayin'.

Okay this is really bugging me now. Why is it that when we recruit 5 star guys they don't turn out to be that good? Aldridge according to some, and Sam Young has not lived up to his 5 star status either. The exception here is Jimmy because he showed me a lot this past game.

IMO, I'm not convinced that JA is not that good. I know he's had injuries but if you start giving him the ball, he just may start getting some good runs.

Teams like SC bring in true freshman that play right away and contribute. Mcknight, Ronald Johnson, Taylor Mays, and their center O'dowd come to mind. I know they have a lot of depth but it also has to do with their COACHING.
