I've been watching ND football since the 50's and finally made it to a practice, free parking and free admittance and a gold seat. Hard to imagine eh. I needed a football fix and this was a beautiful day to get it.
Anyway there were some very impressive performances and some holes to be fixed. The good news is that Clausen looked sharp and has a gun. Crist looked ok at times and Sharpley only occasionally. The centers and gaurds are bigger and looked excellent, but once again the tackles especially left tackle looked overmatched at this level. The second stringers don't look like they are going to have much to offer as far as help this year.
All the receivers were outstanding as they are big, fast and caught everything. The real show was put on by Floyd as he blew by the secondary for a 70 yard TD and a second was barely overthrown by Crist. He caught everything thrown his way.
The tight ends are massive and they too caught everything and impressed the crowd. Kyle Rudolph is a beast plain and simple. Very athletic and great hands.
I was most surprised by the secondary, how big they are and how quick. Bruton of course and McNeil played well getting plenty of praise from not only Charley but Corwin. There was another kid #12 who played on the second team defense, don't know his name who is a player, 2 interceptions and several knock downs.
There wasn't much of a running game but Allen looked sharp the few times he carried the ball. No one else but Hughes picked up much yardage.
The best part of the entire 3 hour session was watching the freshmen, especially on defense. They completely shut down the third team/second team offense. By far the most impressive player out there was Kapron-Moore. He may not make an immediate impact but down the road he's going to be special. The entire freshmen defense looked very athletic and got to the ball.
Clausen, Rudolph, Moore and Floyd really grabbed your attention. Of course I realize this was just one practice but if we can get the OL problem fixed this is going to be a really good team. The weapons are there.
Oh Charlie did announce that Syracuse returned most of their tickets and they are now available for sale. So all you that want tics this may be your chance.
