Have you guys been hearing any rumblings? I was at a party this weekend and there were a few ND grads there and the new AD came up and they said he isn't a guy that is going to give CW much leeway and that he wasn't enamored with CW. Also the topic came up about CW telling the Alum, who gave a substantial amount of money to remodel the locker room, to get out and that he wasn't welcome. He didn't care who he was. LOL

Now I know CW won some superbowls and the pro game is a different animal but the big boosters are the ones who make a lot of these nice facilities possible. I have friends who are Asst AD's and Sports marketing directors at SEC schools and they work their butts off to get money from the alumni for their programs. Actions like CW's make the AD's job hard if not impossible. Their opinion is that CW is gone if he doesn't win at least 8 games. Can anyone confirm or deny? I told them that we have had 2 top 5 recruiting classes and that we were likely to have a top 5 class again. I also told them that our coaching staff improved over the winter and they still held to the 8 wins or out. I'm not bashing CW. I'm just asking what you guys have been hearing.

One thing people cheered about when Charlie was hired was that he "gets" ND.

I think new AD Swarbrick "gets" ND better than Charlie... not only did he graduate from ND, but competed athletically (Lacrosse) and he's from Indiana... so he has the mid-western values that permeate ND as well.

I am guessing Charlie never really "got" the role of Alumni and boosters in the program. There's a political deftness you must have to being coach of a major college program.

I have no doubt that if given the freedom to do so by Jenkins... Swarbrick will let Charlie know in no uncertain terms where he stands, and I think Charlie will accept and buy into it given Jack's credentials... I imagine they do travel some of the same circles given the Indianapolis and Polian connection.

As usual... all opinion, all the time

Nice read Chiro and 1qa. Thanks. I have no inside on this new AD or inner workings of the Alumni, except Charlie went out of his way to schmooze them when he was unable to go on the recruiting trail this year.

Here's my take and It's in DD's archives from 2005 on. We know a group of boosters, Jenkins, etc., dumped Ty. However it was US the FANS grumbling that put the pressure on the boosters and Admin.

I can't tell you how many times I went into AOL College Football chat and got laughed out over Ty and trying to defend the ND program. (That's laughed out guys add insulted, berated and what have you.) In so far as I recall here at DD, IE and so forth it was the FANS pushing for the change even if it was boosters that pulled the trigger. Meaning we FANS provided the gun and bullets and arranged for the hit.

As many others, I knew little about Coach Weis at the start of the season. The more I read and studied the more I liked him as our coach. I care not for the constant negative press, arrogant, fat and what have you. A man can't be all things to all people, you do the best you can possibly do as Holtz says.

I am not sure about this booster that provided money and was tossed out. Looking at that perhaps he over stepped in demanding special favors? No I was not happy with 3-9 but as a FAN I understood the teams problems which we have discussed fully here at DD in much and many lengths.

Any booster saying 8 wins or your history will get this one FAN against that booster and I hope many others back me. I can't provide a ton of money for ND, it is all I can do to occasionally buy some ND gear.

But I have a voice and a DD, ND, IE platform and anyone calling Charlie out is anethema. I know not what will happen 2008. If 2008 is a disater then it becomes time to talk. Anything decent in 2008 I will accept.

Charlie works incredible hours, schmoozes boosters and is recruiting fantasticlly.

If you missed the thrust of this post....It's no booster it's a FAN, you and I, et al that make or break ND, a coach or what have you.

IMHO I put my trust in Charlie.

SJ

I also want to interject that Alumni, too, can be considered fans of Notre Dame Football!

No question about that Alumni, crew and you are one of them. My thrust in the post was the POWER we subway Alumni have.

Guys too poor (let's say unlined pockets), or too far removed from South Bend that never got to or will go to an ND game that have a say so in all of these ND matters. Pardon the pride but without the subway ND would be nothing. There's no cacophony of ouster that I know of past the Media that no one trusts anyway.

everything will be worked out on the field this year. if we do what i know we can cw is safe....if we screw up...then who knows how long cw has.

Hey Chiro nice to see u posting again man...and I tend to agree with SJ and NDj about how things are going to happen. Or should I say how we want it to work out. I believe that CW will get at least 5 years to show what he get done..We are finally getting some prime time recruits and we have to let them season some before the magic begins...But, like every one else alum or subalum I'm ready to watch ND play like we used to play..LIKE CHAMPIONS.:D

success buys you time... but if you are not well-liked, or have favor, within the administration, your days can be limited as there will be little forgiveness with things go awry.

one prime example... Lou Holtz.

If prominent Alumni and boosters do NOT like CW, and it begins to affect the other operations of the University... CW is in trouble.

If FANs do not like a situation ... but the administration supports the coach, or whomever, the coach is safe.

TY was jettisoned because I think he did not respond adequately to the administration concerns ... Diedrick?? ... and probably recruiting.

One, I don't think boosters or anybody should be in the locker room, whether they paid for it or not. The problem, here, is people who think they can do what they want, because they gave money. Hey, I'm an alum, so my voice and access to stuff should be as good as the next guy. I don't care how much F'ing money he gives. Also, we bring in enough that losing a booster isn't going to kill us.

Two, I hate all of this CW sucks and is out talk. Any moron who would kick him out should be shot. If CW doesn't win 8, I don't care. He is a great coach and had a bare cupboard. I have been saying all along that we will win at least 8, but if he doesn't, I know that he is worth the investment. If you can't see that, you don't know football...AT ALL. And, if we get rid of CW this year or next, I will quit watching ND football, quit giving money, and send my kids elsewhere. I hate people caught up in the stupid political games who have no understanding of what is going on or feel slighted, so they make decisions that are adverse to winning. Winning is the only important thing and CW knows how to do it. He, unfortunately, has been put in quite a predicament by a guy who not only failed to win with Quinn's class, but failed to win with Davie's guys. Davie might not have been a good coach, but he knew how to fill out a class. And even so, Davie wasn't nearly as good as CW at filling a class.

Three, to say Swarbrick gets it better than CW is assinine in my opinion. CW knows the ins and outs of football, the backbone of our athletic program. He knows what it takes to get the fans riled up, knows how to gameplan, knows how to recruit, and doesn't take S&*% off of anyone. F the political games. Swarbrick only played lacrosse and he played it when we weren't as good as we were now. We didn't even offer schollies. I play and love lacrosse, but he doesn't get it like CW does, or at best, gets it as well as CW does. CW was a member of the student body. I love the Athletes, but their picture of ND is a little different. The regular students are who support the program and the pretentious pricks sitting in the board room need to recognize that there are other people out there besides those who populate the top .01% of our population economically. Yes, I am ecstatic and was ecstatic to see Ty go, but they better not get too big for their britches.

CW is a damn good coach and anyone who doesn't see that can kiss my A$$. Sorry for the rant, but people who entertain the idea of getting rid of him tick me off, because I feel like I am watching a Monkey operate a vehicle. Hell, if anything, we will be like Mack Brown or Phil Fulmer. Have tons of talent that makes you at least appear to be a good coach. There is no value for the importance of bringing in top talent year in and year out. Ask Mack. Vince Young even won him a title despite being a piss poor coach.

WHOAA Irish Wavend. :) A good report. I can't disagree with a thing.

Great post wavend, I agree totally. Weis is running the program well...recruiting, bringing in good coaches, does great things outside FB. Yes, last year was bad, but saying he's out if he doesn't win 8 games is totally an immature, knee-jerk reaction. He needs to show improvement. I think the only way we don't improve is if the OL doesn't improve and then Latina should be let go but not Weis.

I also agree with wavend that you don't want boosters in the locker room, that just doesn't look good if something happens (unless of course you're USC then it's ok). I really don't have any inside info, but I believe it's reasonable to assume that Swarbrick is not going to bad mouth Charlie at parties...but I could be wrong. Chiro, are you saying that Jack told you these things or is this heresay?

Sorry for the tone. I have been a little ornery since putting my little dog down the other day... But, I guess I conveyed the important stuff. I am usually a little more tolerant of other opinions, so I hope this doesn't dissuade anybody from disagreeing with me. I definitely want to hear opposing views.

PS-My mom makes a good point: Boosters should give money because they care about the program, not because they want special rights or privileges.

tell your mother i said she is a smart and virtuous woman, and you're lucky to have her.........

Hey Wave!!! We Need more people like u posting to get everyone put in there place man...Great post above and sorry to hear about putting your dog down.:(

Irishwave...GREAT POST!!!

Wave ... sorry to hear about your dog. :-(

I agree with you on a number of points... I agree Weis is a good coach, who's done a good job with what he was left, which was not much.

I agree boosters / prominent alums should not be allowed in the locker room... at certain times... but people do like to see what they're supporting, and the sad reality is that this money does bring support various programs well.

I am not saying these money-people are better than you or me... I am just saying the fundraising reality is that we need these people.

I guess we'll disagree about my comment regarding Swarbrick getting "it" more than Charlie... but I think its true. Charlie gets "it" for football... the passion to win... he gets "it" from being a true fan of ND football.... but I don't think he got "it" about alumni and university politics (which is the worst because most people are scheming when there is so little at stake).

Hey... don't get me wrong... I think Charlie is looking out to protect the kids in the program, to protect the reputation of ND and ND football... to just plain F'ing WIN .... to the extent he's willing to use his NJ, devil-may-care, attitude with just about anyone... and there are "political" ways of saying FU... and impolitic ways... you have to choose time and method for each one.

We dance around this one question. Is CW on the hot seat? I think he is but I doubt anybody can put more pressure on him than he puts on himself. To think that he is not on the hot seat after a 3-9 season at Notre Dame is just sticking your head in the sand. But I do not think he is under an 8 win or else gun. That would be ridiculous. Relax guys. CW will bring the team back to greatness. Sit back and enjoy the show.

I say Charlie gets a minimum of 5 years... unless the team repeats 3-9 (unlikely).

if his team is less than 8 wins... I think there will be winds blowing (whispering) for change after season 5.... and preparations will be made.

IF season 5 is break out (ie BCS ... preferably NC), then he gets another 2..

08- 7 wins. 09- 11 wins. 2010- ND wins NC. 2011- FaceMask hits loto, marries trophy wife, moves to South Bend, watches all the home games from press box with all his friends from DD.:clap::drunk::censored:Yeah!

Edited by FaceMask

If...i mean WHEN i hit the big lotto...i'm getting 50yd line seats for everygame and throwing the greatest tailgates for all dd members!!!!

I don't know Swarbrick. You guys have to remember that Notre Dame football is like Indiana Basketball. Everyone talks about it here. I really doubt that we win less than 8 games this year but if the Offensive Line repeats last year then we and CW will all have problems. I still say we will win the NC in 2010. Have I mentioned that we need someone who can kick the football?
