I understand everyone trying to make a dime, but pop-up advertising controlling the window while i am trying to scan and read threads is really annoying, and i am not even redirected back to where i was.

 

This website traffic management is a complete turn-off.

 

As irritating, most of the redirections are to scam websites... meant to sucker money out of you for dubious products or services; not ND quality IMO.

 

Take for example the "His IQ is 125.. Are You Smarter Than Bush"... take a quiz, and then to see your results, you need to accept you'll be charged $X via your phone bill... whatever.

 

I think some judgement needs to be exercised on how DD promotes sponsors, and which sponsors it chooses to associate with.

Agreed - the pop ups just started this morning for me and they are extremely annoying.* The large one for the gas took over the screen and would not redirect back.* Tok me three tries to finally get into DD.* If this continues I'll have to stop visiting.

I'm REALLY not happy with what you guys are doing here as far as advertisements. Seems like we keep needing to have this conversation. That gigantic globe thing was a pain in the arse, having your text pop up with hot links was annoying, and this is the worst by far. I understand when there are commercials for videos on the internet, because its an extension of how television operates, but I don't open a news paper to page 12 only to have some Verizon Wireless add stamped on top of the page that I have to peel away to read about Mideast peace. Its a bad idea that goes beyond a nuisance you grow to live with.

 

If board ownership insists on trying to irritate the natives here, then go back to the text based hot linking. At least I can read what I came here to read without scrolling down for half a page, or without trying to go back and forward trying to avoid some advertiser. But I'm not happy with any of this junk.

I couldn't even get to DD using Safari it kept poping:twisted: No pop ups with Firefox.....

First of all, I take offense to this reply. "What you guys are doing" insinuates that admin/tech are responsible for these adds and that's simply not the truth. The people who put in the advertising code, are people who don't even read this board. I bet they haven't even seen the layout before. We really don't have any control over what, where and when, when it comes down to the pop-ups. Yes they are annoying but they do keep DD afloat. Go and switch your settings on your computer, it's not that hard. I haven't seen one pop-up yet because of my settings. You know in the Bible how the Israelites wandered the desert for forty years? Guess what was behind God's punishment? Their complaining. I simply note that for all of DD's "in-efficiencies", there are a lot of good attributes as well. SJ, Austin and I, work for free. And I think we're starting to see positive results. Let's keep all of this in perspective. Thanks, and no ill-will intended!

I'm generally a diehard lurker of DD... but I can't imagine the site is going to find many new faithful if this situation keeps up.

 

Just my opinion... personally... i don't know how much it costs to run the site, but I'd be willing to chip in some dosh to keep it ad-free.

I sent our dark-horse owner a PM about the inconvenience. I'm not sure what that will do, but it's all I can do. I could erase the ads but I don't want to cause any strife with ownership. Hopefully I'll have some more good news later.

I'd chip in too to get rid of the Ads. Personally I think it makes the site look cheep. The fact that the owners don't come here or seem to care about DD leads me to believe that this isn't about the fans or ND but just a way to pick up some beer money for the weekend. I say we could all get together & buy them out and be well rid of them. Excuse me now while I go to confession. I feel the wrath of the Almighty about to descend on my ungrateful a$$.

I am only a lurker on this board (though perhaps spend more time on it than maybe any other member!), and I suppose my main question is what are the circumstances of this board that lead to these advertising issues? I frequent serveral message boards daily, and cannot ever recall advertising issues being a problem on other boards, but yet they seem to be a frequent problem here. Does it cost more to operate DD than other similar boards? Does DD, since it is a relatively new board, have more difficulty getting "normal" sponsors and advertisements? Is it the layout that leads to fewering ads being placed on the screen? Maybe if the circumstances necessitating the need for these unusual adds were known, they would be less of a bother.

 

With all that being said, I agree that the text based hot linking is the best solution. It's not too annoying and at least lets me read the page without any difficulty. The pop-up today is definitely the worst and really needs to go.

 

Finally, I too love DD, and would be willing to chip in to buy it out if necessary!
