McCoy wins national honor

Southeast High School senior Gerald McCoy has added another honor to his growing list of accolades. He's been named USA Today's national defensive player of the year. McCoy was featured in Wednesday's editions.

"It's exciting to see somebody recognize my hard work," said McCoy, who said his choice of colleges will come down to OU, USC, Notre Dame, LSU, Virginia Tech or Miami.

McCoy is a 6-foot-5, 285-pound defensive end. He finished his senior season with 80 tackles (28 solo), 18 sacks, 11 forced fumbles, five fumble recoveries, two safeties and a touchdown.

Charlie Weis, Larry Coker, Pete Carroll, Bob Stoops, Frank Beamer and Les Miles all have set foot inside the McCoy home.

"It's crazy," McCoy said of hosting the who's who of college football. "As a kid, you see these guys. You're like, man, that's so and so, they've been here, they've coached this player and that player. Now they're in my house trying to get me, too. That's cool."

With people pulling you this way and that way, it's hard to sit back and wade through everything that's being thrown at you, McCoy said.

"My mother and father help me, I get support from everybody," he said. "One thing that will surprise people is that the coaches help me. And I have to give credit to my boy (former OU standout and current Chicago Bear) Tommie Harris. I call him and he'll tell me things."

McCoy said he'll most likely announce his decision on Feb. 1, national signing day.

SAN ANTONIO, Texas - The talk of the West team in San Antonio has been the play of the defensive line and no player has stood out more than Oklahoma City (Okla.) Southeast defensive tackle Gerald McCoy.

Gerald McCoy has been one of the best players in San Antonio this week.

The 6-foot-4, 305 pound McCoy is the No. 2 ranked defensive tackle in the nation and he's been lined up all week next to the nation's top ranked defensive tackle Al Woods.

McCoy said that nobody has been able to beat him in any of the one-on-one drills and his dominance was reflected this week when he was the No. 1 player in Tuesday's Hot 11.

"I don't think I've been beaten in one-on-one's yet," McCoy said. "I got caught up one time by Chris Stewart. I came through and I beat him and I shook him one way and he give me slap and I spun. But when I spun, I slipped and he got me locked up and I spun out of it. I really won it, but I'll give him credit because he did do good on that one."

McCoy is currently undecided on where he'll play next year, but he has narrowed things down to Oklahoma, LSU, USC and Notre Dame.

"I've dropped it from six to four," McCoy said. "Oklahoma, LSU, USC and Notre Dame are my final four. That will be my final four and I don't think I'll add anybody else. That will be my final four and I'll make a decision around signing day."

The team that appears to be in the drivers seat for McCoy is Oklahoma. McCoy said it will be hard to turn down the in-state power.

"To be honest yes," McCoy said when asked if it will be hard to turn OU down. "But it's all about the best school for me. God will set up all the stuff for me and he'll lead me to where I want to go. If OU is not the best place, it's not where I'll be."

However, both USC and LSU are making hard pushes towards McCoy with several of their commitments who are participating in the U.S. Army Game.

McCoy said the Trojan commits on his West team have constantly been getting in his ear about joining them at Southern Cal and his relationship with Woods makes the Tigers a viable option at this point.

McCoy and Woods have really hit it off in San Antonio and the two first became friends during their official visit at LSU.

"Me and Al Woods had a connection the minute we met," McCoy said. "When we met the connection we've had is like we've been playing with each other since little league. Since we've gotten so close, he wants me to go to LSU with him.

"The bond that we have will help out in the recruiting process. Al would probably be my roommate if I go to LSU."

there has been some rumors of McCoy having ND 4th. I spoke to my connection. He said that is not the case. we are still very much in on McCoy. He has one his guys at the AA practices and said that it is something that is being started by one of the recruiting sites.

Time will tell.

i thought that you stated that McCoy verbed to coach Haywood, but would wait until later to announce... things changed? What's the latest broker?

Yeah, I spoke with him today and he sees no changes there. When I stated on the prior post that it was something started by other sites, I was referring to the site that was running a rumor stating that McCoy has ND 4th on his list. Same person who said Young was going to Florida. Young eliminated Florida last week.

My connection said it still appears that McCoy is ND. He has seen nor heard anything changing. He sticks by his comments that McCoy did give his commit to Haywood on that Wednesday evening in Oklahoma. He will be meeting with one of the ND people in the loop this weekend so hopefully he will have further conviction. Cuz, my in has been 100% correct on everything that he has given me inside info on. I still believe he is correct on the McCoy info but I have to admit that I am not quite as confident on McCoy. Let's remember that these are high school kids. Things do change. Maybe it is just me being pessimistic. I don't know. McCoy is just such a huge need. I'm dying to see him in the blue and gold. He's a difference maker, what we need more than anything.

LET"S KEEP THE FAITH and see how it plays out. either way we should be extremely happy on NSD.

Bottom line: I'm told he is still looking ND.

I was also told that his father wants him to go to ND and his mother does NOT want him to go to USC. Oklahoma is probably our biggest competition on this. yeah, that's the local connection but I think other things mean more to him. He did say that God will make sure he goes to the proper place.

Broker, you are way too good at getting info, thanks for the update, i think he is ND, right now rumors fly, because if there is no news then no one reads the websites, this guy is going to be a good one and I think hes going to be Irish

Also, the 2 guys who were floating the rumor are know to not necessarily be the biggest of ND fans.

Sounds good broker. :D Just three more? to wade through of this group then we can track down a whole new bunch of 25. (Pardon me Keith Jackson :D ) Whoooooooa Nellie.

I hate Keith Jackson.

I agree Broker, Jackson's one of the biggest ND haters around!

thanks a ton on the info! Yeah, he is probably the most important target for ND this off season, besides the secondary. Now that the secondary is taken care of, McCoy is one of the last pieces to the puzzle--and probably the most important. I didn't think that Oklahoma had a shot at him until I heard Tom Lemming about 3 weeks ago say that he expected McCoy to go to Oklahoma. I was a little shocked to be honest, but as you said, these are high school kids, anything can happen. I should probably know more than anyone, seeing that I'm 18 and I couldn't figure out what I wanted to do in life until the very end of my senior year of HS. Thanks again.

Broker...you ought to double check your source. According to scout.com, McCoy has eliminated ND.

Shakko welome to DD.........McCoy is Out???
