CW has had three full recruiting class and three years to adjust to college football. if their isn't much improvement then im putting CW onto the hot seat. no excusses for not having a competitive team on the field this year.

He needs to do decently well this year, but next year will be the real test. He needs a team loaded with his players since he inherited nothing. Kuntz's class doesn't count, because Ty did the cultivating of those kids. Because recruiting is such a long process, it would unfair to dump that class on CW. We are in TOTAL rebuild mode. It is almost as if our freaking plane went down with the team when Ty was here. Let's get the ranks filled from Top to Bottom, 5th year to Frosh before we start throwing CW under the bus.

 

Patience... It's one of those virtues we are taught. The problem with American society is we want everything NOW. See, the Iraq War. We are doing just fine, but nobody has patience versus when were in Japan or Germany for 50 years. They seem to be doing pretty damn well, now. I hate seeing that kind of impatience being translated to our football program. Our fans are smarter than that and more patient than that.

While I see, and agree with, what you are saying your statement sounds ridiculous at first glance. CW improved to 3-9 after going to a BCS game the year before..... Just struck a funny bone I guess....

I agree with not comparing anything in sports to war. You also can't compare WWII to Iraq just because the actual fighting has lasted longer. The fighting in WWII took a lot more lives and the entire nation was behind the effort. I wish I could say that the entire nation is supporting the effort of our brave young men and women over seas, but it's not.

I don't think they fire Charlie after a 5-7 year. I truly think he goes at least 5,

but he's on a zero tolerance contract then.

The 2009 schedule from here looks to be comparable, if not better than 2008's. I think the powers that be would expect a 9 or 10 win season after going 5-7 in '08.

I think your right Irish Chris, after the fiasco with Ty, it will be a long time before anyone gets fired before their first five are up.

Cusumano, I do agree that CW needs to put some more effort to improve, but to be fired "ASAP" is going a little too far,and your sounding like you hate him. Don't forget about all the other victories Charlie's brought ND. You can ask anyone here on DD if Charlie has been an excellent head coach these past years (excluding last 2006-2007). I 100% agree with you that Charlie can do A LOT better than 3-9, but just be patient. Notre Dame's time will come, as will Charlie's.

I am noticing something with Paula. He is 200% in either direction. I think it's just his nature. I really don't think there is a middle ground, so when responding, I think we need to adjust what he says to our standard. Then, I think we will be able better understand the message he is conveying. He is just very excitable...that's all.

 

Example:

Us: Weis needs improvement, or he will be on the hot seat.

Paula: Weis needs improvement or he needs to be fired ASAP!

 

Us: Recruit A looks good on film.

Paula: Recruit A will win 6 Heismans!

 

Us: Purdue will have a down year.

Paula: Purdue will go 0-12!

Haha...anyway, just thought I would share my observation that Paula sees thing the same way we do, just to one extreme or the other.

WE LOST TO NAVY AND AIRFORCE dont tell me about the lack of talent!!! any nd fan that says this is an embarrasment!..we had a sever lack of leadership!! please stop with the sorry excuse of talent you are correct we don't have the talent to compete with USC but loses to air force and navy is a HUGE PROBLEM that begins and ends with our HEAD COACH!.....chalie weis gave up play calling? since when does charlie know ANYTHING about any other area of football?? he was hired because he was the PLAYCALLER of super bowl champs! and now he wont be calling plays??..something isnt right, and it better get better fast !!

And.... My point is made. Anyway, Paula, the thing about Navy and Air Force are that their offenses are unique in today's game. They are unique blocking schemes that most teams don't use and they require A LOT of discipline not only for their players but for the opponent. When you have a lot of young guys and holes in both the offense and defense, a team like AF or Navy will eat you alive. Also, you are operating under the notion that AF and Navy are bad teams. You are prejudiced against them based because they aren't powers, but "academies." These are teams that makes bowls. They are also teams that can take good teams down to the wire, ie Navy every year against ND...no matter HOW good we are, or AF against Tennessee when they damn near beat them. Now, if we lost to Duke, you argument might be a bit more solid, but AF and Navy are not the Armies or Dukes of the world. You totally discount that we beat Stanford and UCLA. Unfortunately, we were the victim of youth. I see your point on talent, but discipline and a good scheme can beat talent any day. Also, we are STILLLL Notre Dame. Teams get up for us, and when there is blood in the water, a team that has been dying to beat us will find a way.

 

I agree CW can make a stupid call here and there, like giving the ball to Asaph...EVER, but he makes less than most coaches. Regarding his handing control of the playcalling over to the OC, this is what most coaches do, AND do you really think he is handing over total control? I would even be willing to bet that this is a facade to help Haywood get a head coaching job. Haywood was up for three positions, but got none. Why? In the interview, I guarantee they looked at the fact that CW calls the plays and said, well, you are young and you don't call the plays. Schools might have liked him, but not enough to take the chance.

I'm sure your right there, notredomer. From what ND recruiting looks like for 08-09 we'll do pretty well. Hopefully, we're not going to give up any more games against teams like Navy and Air Force, like cusamono just stated.
