November 28, 200717 yr Can we all refrain from bashing current players....last time I checked they don't get paid to play and are college kids. that line is very old. they don't get actual cash, but get paid pretty handsomely. I was not bashing, just joking. except for the part about Captain. why is he deserving of captain? No way is he captain.
November 28, 200717 yr not directed totally towards you......I have just seen numerous posts and comments about asaph and other ND players that In my opinion are crossing the line. Also the amount of time spent by college athletes and revenue they bring in for the school more than pays for their tuition in my opinion...
November 28, 200717 yr I think it was amusing. The main point is over and over and over again in all sorts of media or blogs their is no real leadership at ND. Being a captain makes him a leader, correct? In turn their is a deffinet locker room split between the old guard and new guard. DJ missing the bus as well fractured the team. Sam Young visited Weis to learn how to be a leader. These are all sign points to let the team appoint captains.
November 28, 200717 yr Well put, SJ. I just don't see why Asaph would be a captain next season. He's a nice kid and works hard, yes, but he should not be a captain. Maybe someone like David Grimes or Sam Young should be considered. Anyway, the players have the final say in who their team captains will be for the season.
November 28, 200717 yr You guys must really be joking. To be a captain, you must be a leader. Being a leader is more then just being a nice guy or having spent the time in the program. Leadership requires respect both on the field and off. How can he command that respect on the field when he can't even follow through with his own responsibilities? If he needs to get in someone's face to get them to step up, how can he do that unless he first demonstrates that he is doing things the right way and putting forth the right effort. As an ex-military officer, one thing I can say is that as a leader you are always being watched. You must be the example for others to follow. While Asaph may be a great kid with a wonderful heart, I just haven't seen that type of action from him to this point.

I don't see how you can know this without being privy to what exactly goes on in the locker room
November 28, 200717 yr Look at his play on the field. I don't see him leading by example. Missing blocks, fumbling footballs, lackadaisical effort are all good signs of leadership I guess. Or, maybe we are using Sullivan and Thomas as the bar.

Thomas would be a good example if not for his stupid penalties

Thomas would be a good example if not for his stupid penalties I understand what both of you are saying, but there's no way Schwapp should be a captain. Personally, I'm going to be very upset if CW keeps his close minded preference towards Schwapp. Seriously, he is NOT a good football player...just a big football player. He hurts this team on the field more than he helps. That's not somebody that I'd want to be my leader. I can't believe we are even having this conversation really. Why don't we just nominate Turk or Duncan. They're going to be seniors as well. And they were nothing short of dominant. Most people will follow a strong, confident, effective, skilled leader. I don't know much about Schwapp, Turk, or Duncan, but I do know they are neither effective nor skilled. Every LB and CB showed that on the blitz this year. Every DLineman showed that this year. Jimmy and Evan have wounds that prove that. And I have a broken remote and an appointment at confession to prove it.

To whoever said Grimes sucked last week, hope you liked that catch he made a Stanford. Had you not made that bonehead comment maybe it would have been a TD as it should have been. Captains next year.......... Bruton and Crum on the D Sammy Young on the O Maust for ST.
November 28, 200717 yr sj your right i think that the team should choose their leader, this is the way most teams do it , the fella mentioned is OK in my opinion but i don't see hims as a leader, blarney hit it on the head , , you got to leads by example lead , follow or get the hell out of the way , seems like i heard lee iokokkkka say that a few times , a good leader must improvise , adapt and overcome any situation , go irish let the team select the captains

How quickly you forget his million dropped passes that hit him in the numbers or hands. I don't understand for the life of me why we cannot have an opinion on this board that, gasp, one of our players is not playing well. I can run off a list 15 long of people that really played like crap this year. If they played like crap...then there's absolutely no reason why people shouldn't point that out. If they play awesome, we love to promote them as the next heisman winner. Seems like a disparity here. Let's not talk about it...because then it never happened.

November 29, 200717 yr anello for captain I'd sign that in a second! If you don't think that guy inspires players to give their all, then your crazy! Blarney nailed it, leadership starts on the field. It's the character you have that you bring over into the locker room that makes for a great leader. A guy can be the greatest leader in the locker, but an inabilty to perform on the field of play is where a "captain" will lose people. Especially young guys not yet ingrained in the program.
