I'm not calling for charlie's head right now, only because he has such a good recruiting class coming in, but we need a coach that motivates. Charlie can not do this. You go to the pep rally's and he just whispers up at the mike. I mean he shows no way of motivating this team. I mean Lou Holtz is the perfect example of this. His pep talks are amazing, he makes you believe that you can't be beat. Not only in the pep rally's, he does not fire up anyone during the games. Ive see him one time do this in a game, and that was after we took the lead in the MSU game last year, there's a shot of him firing up the D. He should have that fire all the time. If Charlie didn't have such a good class coming in I'd say fire him....

Question... Would you be willing to get rid of Weis but sacrifice this years recruiting? Its a tough question I think because a new coach could come in and keep some/most of the kids that are committed right now. Thoughts?

I would not be willing to sacrifice this year's class for the firing of charlie. There are too many good players in that class. Once they sign then its different.

Charlie doesnt have the right personality. At this level, players like to see emotion from their coaches and their coaches doing backflips off high dives or stuff like that. Charlie is more of a sarcastic person and that hurts the attitude of this team.

What good coach would want to come here knowing that they only have a few years to bring ND back or else they will get fired. If they fired charlie this year ND would become a coaching graveyard.

Bowden, Paterno, Tessel...they all seem to be doing fine without doing backflips...

I have been saying hire Lou Holtz as an assistant head coach since week 3 of the season. He should be there everyday to make sure each player is accountable and fundamentally ready to play so CW can scheme and do his magic w/ the qb. CW doesn't have to give up the head coach title, just let Lou be the heart of the team. CW is great at learning from legendary coaches. Let him learn how to turn a team around. Lou took a one win gamecocks squad through a winless season his first year to an 8-4 and 9-3 record his next two years. that is amazing. It is tough to take over a one win team and turn thigns around the next season. But it speaks to his motivating skills when he can take over a team, win zero games one year, and then make the team believe they can win.

Get him in the game. Pay him all the $$$ he wants...not more than CW because CW might get jealous. We NEED Lou!

Firing Charlie would destroy this program for at least 5 or 6 years.

This incoming class would decommit, and we would be staring down the barrel of a 4 win season...........and 4 wins may be pushing it.

21, i somewhat agree, HOWEVER you will See a different charlie next year , as i think he has gotten the message, changes must be coming or Kevin will start looking . charlie will get much better trust me :)

I hope we see a different Charlie next year... but my question is why can't we see a different Charlie this year?

What happened to mid-course adjustments?

Do the "adjustments" require some new coaching elements? or that certain players graduate, and new leaders emerge?

i found Charlie's 11/11 presser assuring... re-examine coaching methods .. etc..

I guess to try to answer my own questions... and gleaning what i can from the internet world ...

It seems the team needs a new identity... starting with strong, positive, inclusive, player leadership... also, this identity needs to be re-enforced by the coaching staff... coaching with some emotion and passion for the love of the game, not the calculating love of winning. Pep talks can and do matter at this level of the game.

I also think this team needs to be coached into "nastiness"... let the players beat the crap out of each other.... the incoming frosh should be initiated with brutal full contact practice.

The message should be clear... win practice.. win play time... and that can only be done with full-speed, take-em-to-the-ground scrimmages... a la USC... especially for Spring & Fall practices.

I am betting our Bowl Blowouts were due in part to non-contact preparations... your team forgets the speed and toughness needed to win.

ANyway... by Charlie's statements.. he seems to get something needs to change, here's hoping he figures it out quickly and finds the elements he needs to get it done.

I hadn't thought about the bowls 1qa but that is a really good point. I still think we had two very difficult draws in OSU and LSU both were playing as well as the number 1 team in the country when we played them. Of the two, I think we had a better shot of beating OSU.

Ding ding ding! We need to be paying attention to these observations. Go ask Lou or Ara how many times a year they practiced in shorts or shells. This is a major problem in player development right now and we need to make sure Charlie makes this much needed adjustment from pro to college practices.

Our future depends on this!!

im confident that ND will not fire Weis. they really cant, it would not be good for the future. Weis had 10 win back to back seasons and now 1 brutal season. if Weis is fired now you set a new precident that coaches at ND only have 3 years because both Ty and Weis will have only been given 3 years. new possible coachs might not even want to come if theres a chance they could be gone after 3 seasons.

now if Weis himself was to leave that would be different, but i dont see him just leaving.

i agree SpecialFNK. we all knew ND would have a down year. in CW firts two years everyone loved him and now people want him out. ND is still a work in progress and getting rid of CW or any of his assistants would not be wise at this point. i think CW has learned a lot this season on how to coach a college team. lets give him a chance to do his job, CW is bringing in the talent lets give him a chance to develop it.

I agree that CW and CB shouldn't go anywhere, but something is going to change on the oline development side.

It's gotta change dome.

We have or are about to get the all time sack record in Div1 football.

that's insane at ND.

Something will change on the o line front.

Somebody has to take the fall for a 9 loss and counting season, and we know it won't be Charlie.

I don't want to sound like like I'm defending CW on this issue, because I'm really not, I don't agree with this practice procedure, but if his reason is because of lack of depth, then I kind of understand. I know that for CW's three years, he has not been able to field an OL for both sides in the B&G game, the OL had to play both ways. I hope that CW practiced in shorts as a way to help and prevent his already very thin OL from getting thinner. An injury during practices with the OL situation that CW has had to live with would have been a disaster, worse than it is now if thats even possible. (I'm not sure it is).

Thats the only viable reason I have to defend CS on this, and if its not the reason, I'm at a loss.....

I've got an idea: Hire Lou as a special motivational assistant!

I have to agree.

One kid from the O line going down would be catastrophic.

Well, at least it would have been if the season wasn't almost over.

I know you were happy to see Sully get knocked out of the Navy game too NDFAN.

I'm glad he wasn't hurt, just happy to see him not in.

I wouldnt fire Charlie after this aweful season even though much of it is his fault. Even with average recruiting I wouldnt fire him. One more season of this though and I would show him the door. With the paycheck he's getting he better not screw up again.
