not sure how all this got started but when you open the practices to the public, "others" will come for a piece of the pie. coach pete should keep these closed to the public only let recruits attend, Most of the schools in the country don't allow people to attend practices, notre dame dosent allow 'FRIENDS TO ATTEND " WHERE IS THE NCAA IN THIS , ? PETE YOUR TIME IS UP THIS YEAR ???? WHAT SAY YOU?

Lipstick on a pig!! This is what I'd call USC's "damage-control". Fighton, even USC admitted wrong doing on Reggie's part when they didn't invite him back to the NC game! What, he wins the Heisman and can't even come back to watch a game from the sideline?? Sounds kind of "OJish". It doesn't matter what anyone thinks. Did USC know any of this? It's hard to believe they didn't, when these article were written and splashed all over the internet. His parents were having huge parties with special guests and it is well documentated! Which would leave me to believe that someone at USC had some kind of knowledge. If I read about it here on my computer , 2,000 miles away, in a town of 50 people; you bet your a$$ someone @ USC knew something. I'll try to find those articles and post them for you. To me, USC looked away. They didn't want any part of it, yet they wanted to allow their star and star's family to be happy. Oh well, if ND had a risk of losing their 88 NC, I'd be desperate too!! If their is nothing to worry about, then why are they woried???? -tDon

I'm not here to defend Reggie Bush, because if he did take improper benefits (or his dad at least), then he is guilty of violating NCAA rules and deserves to be punished. However, I do think that most people who read this sensationalized story about USC need to understand a couple things:

a) the NCAA treats benefits from "agents" a lot differently than from "boosters". boosters help the program, whereas agents hurt the college program - WHY whould USC have wanted agents around Bush? they wanted Bush to stay, not leave for the riches of the NFL! the NCAA does distinguish boosters from agents... USC didn't benefit from Bush receiving benefits.

b) as far as "agents" around the locker room, it is not so simple. USC has people all over their "open-to-the public" practices, the locker room, etc. I have personally been in the locker room and it was because I was friends with a player. However, I do know for a fact that coaches, if they spot an agent (they know most of the big-time agents), they will kick that person out of practice or the locker room.

c) you cannot reasonably expect USC to know everything that goes on with the program. again, it is surprising what USC coaches do NOT know about their players, as I was friends w/ a lot of former players (nothing illegal, but i guarantee coaches would've been pretty angry if they found out what some of the players did). the "car" that Reggie Bush drove was nothing spectacular - especially at USC.

d) these two "sports marketers" - they are ex-cons and thugs. they have been purposely funneling information to Yahoo to a) extort the Bushes for money, and b) to try to increase their settlement amount. From what people around the program are telling me, Reggie Bush's greedy dad (the guy who announced Reggie was going pro during the UCLA game) tried to create his own sports agency. Lake and Michaels were brought in to provide some of the business capital. I think Michaels' attorney confirmed this as well (not sure).

And I thought Domers were a bunch of homers that looked at things through rose colored glasses. You cracked me up.

So tell me how my arguments are flawed?

I'm not denying the benefits, but I am denying this rush of judgment that the university is "corrupt" or "cheating" when USC did not benefit at all. These are not boosters (Oklahoma, etc..) - they are agents who, if anything, eliminated any chance that USC had of having REggie Bush come back for his senior year.

It may have not helped them with Reggie Bush, but it helped them with all of the recruits that saw the agents hanging out in the locker room and seeing how easy it was to get paid (under the table) and possibly get to the NFL, so it might not have helped them with Reggie, but it sure as hell probably helped them land some other star players that saw the cash and possible NFL connections that every recruit wants.

Two posts in one topic??? Keep it up CPA, I'm lovin' it!!! :D

Love Fighton but let me shoot some of your arguments down In the article below it is true it was a 10 year old car redone black on black popual because it's fast and can have wide tires an Big rims. Bush did outfit it in those as well as an expensive Sterio system. In Dub magazine, devoted to Athletes and their cars Bush is pictured sitting on the hood of a similar descrptive car.

I am uncertain that SC gives a $700.00 monthly apartment rental. That comes to seven million dollars a month say SC's enrollment is 10,000 students. You see it is impermissible under NCAA rulesto give an athlete more than a regular student gets. I believe it was Wisconsin? That got slapped by the NCAA because this shoe store was giving just the atletes the shoe discount. Soves? Vs Plane trips, clothes, car and Hotels??

That's denial but we will know friday. The lawsuit records are filed in court, tape recordings and once filed the NCAA can legally obtain them for sanctions.

EDIT I FORGOT TO INCLUDE THE LINK

Yes, SC gives its players $600-700/month if they decide to live off campus, just like EVERY OTHER PROGRAM in the nation. If you want me to break down how athletic scholarships work, I can do that... There's no discount on rent, no discount on utilities, etc - the player just personally receives the money that he would otherwise have saved if he were to live on campus for free.

How am I in denial? I have been the first to admit that Bush's family probably received improper benefits. I'm just trying to explain the facts....

Also, if you've seen Reggie Bush's car (the suped up Chevy Impala) and compared it to the other cars at USC, you would understand...

"And at one point during the 2005 season, sources say Bush thought that Carroll knew about his parents' living arrangement and feared he was going to conduct his own investigation. Bush called Michaels, instructing that if Carroll called regarding the house to "tell him that you're a longtime family friend." Carroll never called Michaels. "

- Here's the link between USC and Bush's parents. Case closed.

Don't forget this point fighton as well. Before "Bushgate", there was the whole Jarrett and Leinart housing situation, so PC probably laid down the down (I would assume) and should have been looking at things more closely.

I can't afford to go to 1 game myself, and the whole world knew (via TV stories during games) that the Bush family went to every single game. They had money from somewhere (they were supposed to be poor) and if at the games, they had to have made contact with Pete, since Reggie was the star, projected #1 draft, etc. IMO, Pete turned a blind eye probably cause things like this hadn't been a problem before. Afterall, it is Hollywood. Having said all that, nothing will happen to USC. This is only an attempt to get money out of Bush and then Lake will quit talking. NCAA doesn't wan to take down USC, it loses too much.

Hey Fighton... you make some strong points... based on the premise that AGENTS actually "hurt" the program.

If agents and "sports marketers" quietly (or loudly) support players or their families (and the NCAA has a rule against that), then it does benefit the program. Players and their families are receiving direct financial gain by being "amateur" athletes associated with the college team.

The fact that Pete makes access to these athletes very easy is a lack of institutional control, IMO. Pete Carrol has control over who can access the athletes on USC campus; he chooses not to screen or limit access to the public though... and agents (a booster by another name) take advantage. It's like to telling people to be virtuous in a brothel, or telling a drunk not to drink in a bar.... hard not to do.

As for the Impala, if he got funds for the car because of this "agent", then I think it is a significant financial gain.

Anyway, good arguments, weak premise... great discussion.. :-) that's what I think.

Good

:D OK obviously can't be settled here has to be settled by NCAA on Reggie's side. I withdraw with Honor. :D

I agree with you SirJ, let the courts decide. I also, resign from this argument. Fighton, keep your posts coming! -tDon

Anyone heard any news? Is the NCAA out in California today? I really hope the bomb is dropped on U$C. I know a lot of programs cheat, but a program that does it this blatantly and has so much success as a result should be made an example. Then, maybe other programs will clean up their act out of fear that they could be next. Have everyone play by the rules and then we'll see how many of these powerhouse programs can maintain their success.

They get the court records but usually an NCAA investigation can take many months if not a year or more.

Well Lake evidently met with the NCAA for 6 hours today. I'm really in quite disbelief. I figured Bush would give Lake his money and the whole thing would blow over without Lake meeting with the NCAA.

With the meeting actually taking place, I would bet money something gets handed down to USC eventually.

If nothing else, the prospect of looming NCAA investigations and sanctions might just be enough to keep our commits from being tempted by the Poodle's poaching efforts.
