i didn't see him either. i was real surprised not to see hughes in the backfield when ND had the ball on UCLA's one yard line twice.

Speaking of running backs: I was really impressed with Aldridge this past Saturday. The guy ran with power and burst and gained yards when most other backs would have been stood up. It was encouraging.

i wasn't impresse with any of the RBs. ND only rushed 46 net yards on 38 carries (1.2 YPC) and aldrige only gained 52 yards on 22 carries. NDs run game still stinks.

No doubt the run game stinks. But after looking over the UCLA film Aldridge had some great runs. It's not his fault he has three guys coming at him on 8/10 of the runs. His talent impressed me not the production which he can do nothing about most times.

i was more impressed with AA, myself. he hit holes fast and got to the second and third level fairly easily. he's seems to be improving on kick returns as well.

i'm also telling ya, we're usually one missed assignment away from breaking a big run. i saw it time and time again i saturday's game. i look for us to break a big one in the next coupla weeks...

Hughes has looked better than Aldridge. He must have done something to piss off Charlie to not see any action...or Charlie is being stubborn.

AA is a back that needs a little more space to work with than the others, but once he gets that space, look out...I think as the line improves, AA will too. Hughes makes his own space, so we need him in the game with the run blocking we have.

Weis talked about Hughes in today's presser. He said that because they weren't having long drives they didn't need to use Hughes. Aldridge was never tired so they didn't use Hughes. Charlie said that Aldridge is the most consistent in all facets of being a running back that why he gets most of the carries.

Wondering when we'll have a feature back like Autry Denson again :(

autry denson was a good RB but he ran behind some very good OL while at ND, guys like rosenthal, wisne, ridder, doughty, merandi, petiguite, akers, clevenger, leahy. ND has three real good RBs, it's just they don't have the OL that ND use to.

Petitgout. ;)

Chris Clevenger barfed inches from my shoes as I walked the sidelines one Navy game years ago. Seems he had the pre-game jitters...that or he drank too much fruit punch Gatorade...

we didn't need hughes but we put in Travis Thomas (i thought i saw him out there)? I was very surprised at him not playing, especially during goal line situations.

I have no idea why we keep using Travis Thomas in goal line situations. I mean, yeah he's a team player and has always done what the coaches asked...but honestly, there are numerous guys on our team that I would rather see in that situation that TT.

Charlie said that Travis is the best in goal line situations, junior is the best at pass protection, and Robert is the best at catching. Everybody knows Armando is the speed guy. Though he said Aldridge is the most consistent at all these things except for speed compared to Armando.

The thing with Travis that drives me crazy is he gets the goal line touches, but I have yet to see him carry a defender on his back while moving the pile. He seems more like a one cut back, rather than the bruiser that'll keep his legs churning. I'm a big Robert Hughes supporter, so you can see why I'd be miffed at the use of Travis.

Welcome back Calves. I was wondering if you'd make it back this direction.

I really like Hughes. There is no doubt in my mind that he would have scored from the 1 yard line on Saturday.

to be fair, hughes has been stuffed in recent weeks in short-yardage situations, so let's not pretend like he's been unstoppable or something.

and while i agree that TT is the least of the 4 backs mentioned, he did do a decent job fighting for extra yards inside the 5 last saturday...

but, all things being equal, i'd like to see hughes in there and if he can catch as well as CW says he can, you can run some play action with him. which i imagine would surprise the opponent more than a little as he is seen as a short yardage bruiser, not pass catcher.

that is very true, black, about him being stuffed. i forgot about those 4th and 1's against purdue (i think..). Nonetheless, i think he should be out there at least some, he did well in longer, less obvious situations, i.e.-Mich St.

I don't want to sound like a know-it-all, but CW is wrong in this case. If he's the best we have on the goal line, I see why we tried to throw it on 1st and goal from the 1.

Personally I would give the ball toLuke "the human wrecking ball" Schmidt. The guy is a scorer!
