If ND has a regular season record better than 9-3, I'll consider that a great success.  I just don't see ND beating Ohio State or USC in 2023.  So much 'newness' to what ND will be bringing to the field this year.  A third loss?  Clemson?  NC State?  I don't have great confidence, based on last year's inexplicable losses to Marshall and Stanford.  I hope ND shows me that I just need to 'get over it' by dominating the teams they are supposed to beat in 2023.  ND does have good players at every position in 2023.  Upgrades in many areas.  I definitely have hope, just not confidence.  Hopefully they blow through the first 4 games without a hiccup.

Lot of teams have lots newness... The HC needs to show out. Big year for Freeman.

Of course!  It was a tongue-in-cheek comment. It wasn’t a tough choice at all, given all the upgrades I mentioned immediately below that comment.

    Yup. Best lateral in CFB.

If he sucks, he'll suck. But great opportunity to bet on himself.

    This is lol….

getting in line…as I said. Rees was Saban’s fifth choice or something like that. Doesn’t sound like guys jumping in line to me.  He’ll, Saban even had to go back and recycle his old defensive coordinator because nobody wanted that shyt.
As for those other coaches or coordinators I should say. Kiffin, O’Brien, Sark were reclamation projects. They were decent coaches but had serious problems. Not like Saban showed those guys anything. If anything, they showed Saban that the ground and pound isn’t the only way to win games. Yes, The NFL is more attractive now. Pay is equal at most places now both in college and in the NFL. All you have to do is wait your turn and you’ll probably get a desired job of your choosing.  Who wants to get bitched at by an old man who’s on the verge of either retiring or having a heart attack on sideline and you’re out of a job in either of those situations. Rees is taking a chance imo. Good for him.
As for past coordinators as you brought up. Where are Jim McElwain, Major Applewhite, Kevin Steele, Jeremy Pruitt, Doug Nussmeier, Tosh Lupoi(known cheater) at?  Just because you served under Saban doesn’t mean straight head coaching experience and you’re going to be a legit coach like you are assuming. There’s more flame outs than winners in his tree of coordinators. So please stop. Rees has just as much of a chance to flame out at Bama under Saban as he did at ND. Saban doesn’t automatically equal success as much as your SEC homerism always try to suggest.

Sorry, but your response is simpleton....

So couple questions???? Dare you answer...

    1. who were the top 4? or is that your rumor...
    2. who were the last 4 OCs, what were the # that year? where did they come from. where did they end up after when Bama?

    lol

  4. On the roster, still seems math still is a bit out of whack.

    24 signed, 5 new transfers.

The 23 class looks like we'll be #10. Disappointing... given the start.

21 and 22 were better, and IMO both underrated (especially Alt21 and Morrison22)...

24 rank is banked on Carr right now. Hope that sticks...

  5. Part of me thinks 9-3, part of me thinks 12-0....

If we are for real, we need to win vs OSU and USC at home... New OSU QB... USC's QB is going to good. USC's D? Don't know... No idea about Klubnik (Clemson).

Year #2 is big for Freeman.

I like our new QB... Without Rees, no idea about our O though. And if we end up with UT's OC, will be confused. I'd be much more optimistic with Rees.

    A tough choice for Rees.

Get a big promotion, work for the coach with the most championships, upgrade facilities, upgrade players, upgrade weather, upgrade game day experience, upgrade competition level….

    I’d make that choice too.

I suspect Saban will challenge Tommy in ways that Freeman never did or would. He will succeed because he has too.

Freeman will have a lot of great choices for replacement. He just has to be able to be an amazing head coach now. The Kelly era is gone gone gone. And good riddance, I say!

    IMO...

    • not a hard choice. If he was next in line for ND, then it would tough. But we have a young HC already.
    • Working for the best HC in CFB right now, perhaps best ever...
    • Probably best springboard in the nation.. Succeed, and a nice D1 HC job, or even a NFL OC job...
    • Probably the best chance to win a ring in the next 3 years...
    • Cruit'n is easier... funding is easier.... weather is better.... facilities are better... top 5 QBs most years... top 5 rank in 5 stars in most years...

Cool, just make it quick.. So who would be the candidates to replace him?

I thought the same thing when announced...

This should put to rest the belief that Tommy doesn't have what it takes to be an OC

Yup. Rumor was he had position coaching offers in the NFL too the last two years.

The Rees complainers... just giggles right now. I don't know if he'll be great, or have a great career... but he has done well in a tough situation.

Two things.  1.  This is Saban's 5th choice now.  Or something like this.

    2.  Why would anybody want to subject themselves to Saban's bitching.  He was close to going to the Rams last year.  He is already on the eyes of a few.  Going to Bama isn't going to open more eyes.

But hey, it's whatever he wants.  Take the yelling and better athletes in hopes of getting the same job you would eventually get at ND.  Or stay at your alma mater and still get the job you were looking at but with less yelling and a little less talent.  Seems easy to me.  Especially if the money is the same.

    This is lol.

People get in line to subject themselves to learn from Saban. Look at OCs, DCs, and position coaches over the years.

OCing at Bama, who is the #1 team of the last decade+, is better path than a HCing at a crap D1 team or even a NFL position coach job. 5th or 50th. Doesn't matter. Bama OC or DC is probably the best springboard in the nation.

I like Barnes or Riley moving over. Barnes has great size and length. I was also impressed with him in practice clips and I know he cross trained.

Riley is another candidate, however I have not seen or heard a peep about him since he stepped on campus.

    Future is fun... lol.

Gonna be fast i guess. Young guys, position switches, etc.

I like the HC making choices.

The more speed is key at a position over size /strength, the easier it is for younger players to see the field. i.e. WR, DB, and RBs.

Speed, strength, etc.. gotta love it.

I wish it could it took it.

Instincts, brains, etc. need too. young.

Minnich did not play both ways a ton. I’d say it was 80/20 D vs O in the game I saw.

Minich had 300+ yards on offense receiving. He was their starting X IIRC, and was their #3 per what I read.

Doesn't matter to be honest. The point is he wasn't focused only on D.  He at minimum he was either a starter WR or #3, also returned kicks and punts, and also ran track.

Now, he'll be 100% focused. That doesn't mean he'll be good. Just now he'll be focused.

But he’s not depth, he’s the starting FS. That’s not good.

Our S scheme is a bit mixed (not really straight FS and SS). And bleeds between S and NB.

I have no clue how the S depth chart looks in September, but I'd guess we'll see some change.

    Obvious returning guys - Brown/Watts/Henderson

Transfers - Harper was listed S at OSU, but played a hybrid NB/S position. He could be either NB or S in 23. I like him at NB, but skinny. He can pattern match in verts, so wouldn't be shocked if he's a S in our scheme. Chatter is we're still looking for more Ss.....

Frosh - both likely will need time, but both will get looks. Both have great traits.

Position swap (from CB) - IMO, our CB room will be crowded. Perhaps Riley, Barnes, or Tucker jumps from CB to S. I'd bet at least one does...

I know Minich isn’t ready, I’ve seen him play. He’s good, but nowhere close to seeing the field next yr.

Maybe. Morrison's film was raw too. Both Minich and Morrison played both ways (DB and WR, and both returned kicks). I think Morrison's game really clicked when he focused on D. Perhaps Minich does too.

Mike Micken’s did, and I remember Coach Freeman talking about how Micken’s just knows who has it, and pushes for them to be on the field.  Take Sauce Gardner as an example, which is who Freeman had mentioned he did the same with, because I could see Morrison being just as good.  I feel Jayden Mickey will be almost as good too, and felt he showed his potential in the bowl game.

    Love Mickens.

But our coaches puffed up all the guys early. And we kinda offered Benny later (vs other schools). I like Mickey too. IIRC, we offered him earlier than Benny.

But doubt expected him to be great as a frosh. Perhaps later, but not this early. And the CB room was ripe (and young) with opportunity.

Well if Justin played Vyper he can  too. I  like him better vs the run. Did the dude from utah state choose a school yet?

Oh I agree. Justin was 250ish too. That's my point.

Just not sure we are driven by traits anymore though.

Vaughns has been quiet for the last couple days. Has a bunch offers. And is only 225ish at DE. Interesting prospect.

    Not great if he’s starting.

Kids improve. So wouldn't assume. But never expected him to be elite.

I've viewed him as a situational starter/snap guy depending the O scheme / QB we face.

He's good at some things, not so good at other things.

Regardless, at minimum, he's great depth.

Hmm. That would be interesting. Maybe Fisher moves inside and Baker takes over RT and Schrauth/Spindler is the other guard next to Correll. I guess I can go with that. I don’t see Alt moving anywhere. He’s been great, it’s the blindside of the top two qbs on the roster and it’s his money year. I don’t think he would welcome a change at this point.

Not saying Fisher moves inside. Just saying we look better, and deeper, at OT. I could see Fisher, Baker, or other T depth (like Wagner, Tanoa, Chan, or even Jagusah), get a look at iOL. Alt isn't going anywhere lol. When Harry had great depth at Ts in previous years, he moved guys to iOL. For instance, QNelson was considered an elite OT prospect, but we had great OTs already, and he went to LG to get the best 5 on the field.

In short, always respected Harry for 2 things (on top of general development). Attitude, and willingness to move guys.

    Lots of TCU mentioned

I'd bet on Florida, but TCU has certainly been a hot team so far in the portal.

What is strange, TX (UT) was a big player when he was a recruit. And seems no interest from TX (can you say Arch lol). TAMU is mentioned a lot early. The situation with FL (Rashada) will be interesting. TCU is probably the easiest place to win the starting job though.

He’s got a little bit of a gunslinger to him. Which I like, but I hope he takes a look at his line and his rb’s (and defense) and realizes he doesn’t necessarily need to take all those chances that he needed to at wake to stay in a game

    I feel exactly the same...

He had to be hero at Wake. Won't need to do that at ND (I hope lol)... But it's good he can be, if need be...
