  1. The defensive line is not great. Outside of Mills, Rubio and Baptiste, our defensive line is small and weak. Botelho has been a major disappointment and we don’t rotate guys in enough.

Not as concerned with S&C, however it may be too early to tell. I expected a let down after an emotional game and playing a solid team on the road. Our lines got better as the game went on last week.

  2. I’m talking to people like myself who get too emotionally invested in this team. I can’t for the life of me understand why I let something I have zero control over impact my emotions so greatly. I removed my emotions after the 2018 Clemson game but got roped back in during the 2020 season, probably in part due tot COVID and being stuck at home.

My love for this team is a microcosm of my life. I invest so much into people yet don’t get the same in return and am left disappointed, time and time again. Just when I think my ex is going to change, she pulls the rug from under me and reminds me why we continue this cycle. I picked OSU to win, but again, I got my hopes up and truly believe we had this game won. I should have known better, we ALWAYS find a way to lose these games.

I am just venting. I would love to experience what it would feel like to win one of these games, just once. I’m curious for those who were able to detach your emotions from this team, how did you do it? Should I just stop watching games?

  3. I was never huge on Diggs but the guy really produces. He doesn't get a lot of attention because he's not a burner, twitchy, shifty or a power guy, but he has elite vision, balance and patience. I get that he wants to be a lead back, he's been pretty productive here (5 ypc last year and over 800 yards).

I think most are higher on Price and Love might be our most talented back. Estime also likely becomes more of a workhorse. We also haven't seen the last of Tyree at running back. ND will be fine.

It was hard to tell just watching the extended highlights, but it looked like C. Lewis got beaten badly a few times and missed a tackle that led to a TD.  Hopefully that was just a blip.

Heard Onye continued to impress, as well as the younger LBs (Ziegler, Zinter, Ausberry, etc.)

I did listen to a few commentaries that praised the young linebackers that you just mentioned. I would still hate to lose Prince, but it would definitely soften the blow. I just know that I've seen him flash more in a few plays than I have seen from Liufau in his entire career. Bertrand, Kiser and Liufau are not a top 25 caliber linebacking core. If ND wants to compete for a title, it needs athletes like Kollie, Sneed, Ausberry and Ziegler on the field.

it is funny, the comemtators that all posted those videos have to have short memories because they don't have to be right, they just have to get us to react.

It definitely worked. It sparked a discussion at least, but I don’t think anyone in here thought Buchner would start. I still haven’t seen anything with my own eyes to suggest he will win the job in 2024.

I think it’s clear Jayden Thomas is wr1, as well

Well, keep in mind that Merriweather and Colzie might have performed a lot better if Hartman was throwing to them. I will say Thomas looks a lot quicker and more agile than last season. Our top three receivers (all fast and 6'3+) are going to be nightmare matchups for any defensive backfield. Sam Hartman won the lottery (if only he transferred last year!).

Greathouse is really intriguing to me. I made a thread about the freshmen and he was the freshman I picked to make the biggest impact. ND has typically recruited physically imposing receivers (Claypool, Boykin, Robinson, Floyd) or burners (Tate, Brown, Fuller). Greathouse is maybe the most polished receiver ND has ever signed. His route running is going to create a ton of separation and he is going to be money on third downs. I wonder if he forces his way on the field or if they try to get him on the field with 4/5 wide receiver sets. Did we use any 4/5 wr sets?

Bold prediction: Styles is good enough to play man to man in nickle by end of fall camp.

Should I one up you and say he can supplant Hart? Hart has all the tools... long arms, athleticism, height and ball skills. Cam Hart just hasn't put it all together. He had the one game at Wisconsin but has been hampered by injuries and misses way too many tackles. Just so we're clear, I think Hart starts opposite Morrison, but he no question needs to be more physical out there.

Realistically, there is a battle at nickel between Harper, Mickey, Barnes, the freshmen and Styles. At the least, this gives us the flexibility to be in nickel and dime a little more. I'm not sure how the freshmen have looked, but Mickey improved as the year went on and flashed a few times, especially in the bowl game. Ultimately I think this could be a battle between Mickey and Styles.

We're stressed in the secondary number wise

Styles at corner? Maybe Lewis or Barnes at safety?

I’ll be honest I am a tad confused at all this. Does this say more about the young receivers stealing reps or a lack of depth/talent at corner? I’m going to go with it’s likely a bit of both.

I will say Cam Hart hasn’t developed like I thought he would. Still isn’t physical enough and is borderline awful at open field tackling. Barnes looks great in practice but can’t sniff the field. Mickey flashed at times as a freshman. We have some highly touted freshmen corners as well.

I don’t think we’d move a guy like Styles if he isn’t at least competing for a starting spot at corner. Seems odd.

Has anyone else listened to this? I for one am not someone to panic or get too hyped up over spring ball, however, there are some valid concerns that give me pause. Hartman did pile up his stats against some weaker ACC competition and did struggle vs better teams (as most do...). Hartman is coming into an entirely new offence and after watching Wake the past few years, the offence seemed gimmicky. What if Hartman has already reached his ceiling? What if he was elevated by the Wake system and excelled vs the worst P5 competition in college football?

One thing I have learned from this whole situation is that Buchner does not fear a little competition. Most QBs in his position would have transferred but Buchner didn't flinch. Buchner has a much higher ceiling than Hartman and if he reaches his potential, he could potentially be a Heisman contender and lead us to the playoffs. He has character, his teammates love him, he's an incredible athlete... but those mechanics, the turnovers and the Marshall game. The guy is an enigma. If he starts this year, I think this team either crashes/burns and he transfers, or ND wins double digit games in the regular season.

It brings some intrigue into fall camp nonetheless. My prediction? Hartman starts and ND has a similar season to 2021 and ends up in a NY6 bowl game. Hartman has a solid, yet unspectacular year and Buchner is a more than capable back up. This teams identity is that they have a mean offensive line (IMO, best OL unit in CFB), big tight ends and a stable of running backs. This is a run first football team that is going to make teams pay with the play action. Buchner will see some time running the zone read and the offence might be more dynamic with him, but I'm not ready to go there yet. We'll know fairly soon if Sam is worth the hype and if he's not, I think he's got a shorter leash than we might have anticipated.

    Thoughts? predictions?

Rumors are Smith is leaving ND for personal reasons. No info beyond that.

Have heard the same on Kollie, but also think people might be reading too much into him missing one practice. He could have had a class conflict or something else came up. He just appeared in front of the media a week or two ago, and he's been getting praise from the coaches, even if he is still stuck behind Liafau. Hope he sticks around, but get if he doesn't want to sit on the bench for the third year in a row.

Why does this crap always happens at ND.... if the goal is to win a NC, we need starters who are capable of playing at the likes of Bama/UGA, or heck, even make their rosters. We have so few of these guys on the defense. Based off of college tape, only Morrisson has proven to be on that level. Based on potential? We have a few guys: Botelho, Baptiste, Sneed, Mills, Rubio, Kollie and some of the freshmen.

Kollie has flashed more in a handful of snaps than Marist has in his entire career (minus UNC 2020). It would be the most ND thing to lose your most athletic linebacker (at a position of weakness) by sticking to the status quo (which has been lacklustre to say the least). Really hoping this is a false rumour.

  11. The hire of Parker has alarm bells ringing for me. Freeman is a brand new HC who is not on the hot seat, however the seat is fairly warm. For a defensive coach in his position, you'd think he would bring in a qualified OC who is a as close to a sure thing as there is.

Instead he hires a TE coach who was fired from WVU during his only year as an OC? The WVU offence was nothing to write home about during his 1 year stint and Purdue went 0-6 under his watch in 2016 I believe.

I'm just confused as all hell about the rush to hire Parker, as OC of Notre Dame, when he's not even on the radar for any Div 1 OC job. This is Notre Fu ck ing Dame! ND should be able to hire a top OC from almost any school outside the top ten.

If Freeman squanders this experienced and talented offence on an unqualified "buddy" hire, then he may pay the price.
