"George is a special player, he's just kind of a human highlight reel. He's returned punts for touchdowns, kickoffs, caught touchdown passes, run back interceptions. If there's a way to score, he's done it." -Northeast coach, Ron Kroeger

Lemming seems to consider West to be a DB more than a WR. Here is the article from the SB Tribune.

DB West looks East at Notre Dame

COLLEGE FOOTBALL

By JEFF CARROLL

Tribune Staff Writer

George West, a multiple-threat athlete from Oklahoma City, confirmed to the Tribune on Thursday that he has committed to Notre Dame.

West, a likely college safety, becomes the third defensive back in the last week to join coach Charlie Weis' 2006 recruiting class.

"I felt it was the right fit for me," West said prior to his game Thursday evening. "They have that swagger back in the program and their team chemistry is great."

Leonard Gordon, a 5-foot-10 DB from Fort Campbell, Ky., and Jashaad Gaines, a 6-0 DB from Las Vegas, became the 14th and 15th players to offer a verbal commitment to Notre Dame.

West, No. 16, had 10 catches for 234 yards and three touchdowns this year heading into Thursday's game for Oklahoma City Northeast Academy. He also had two interceptions, and returned three kicks for touchdowns.

West has led his school to a 4-0 start after catching the game-winning 2-point conversion Thursday in a 26-25 victory.

Recruiting analyst Tom Lemming rated West a four-star prospect in his summer recruiting guide.

"His coverage skills are second to none," Lemming wrote. "He excels in man coverage, has the confidence you look for in a big play defensive back and is very competitive.

"He shows great closing and recovery speed and terrific instincts."

Last season, West caught 45 passes for 809 yards and 10 touchdowns. He had 36 tackles and nine interceptions.

West averaged 21.6 yards on punt returns and 24.6 yards on kickoff returns as a junior, running back five kicks for touchdowns.

According to the Web site Rivals.com, West also had offers from Baylor, Colorado State, Iowa State, Kansas, Northwestern and Texas Tech.

Irish4life. Yes 2004.

Each school cas offer 25 schloarships each year or like now 2005. These kisds will be the 2005 class for ND when they graduate May 2006 from HS.

However, :D There are some intelligent HS kids who are completing all HS class work and studies by end semester Dec. Rather than sit around at home doing nothing till graduation in May, Notre Dame now allows them to enroll early. These NCAA allows to be counted with the other 15 Coach Weis got on 2004.

For ease of explanation presume Coach got 25 slots filled 2005. He can't have any more. But five want to enroll early January. They get bumped to the 2004 group. Coacvh now can grab five more (or 30) :D

Irish I left out explaining the benifit for the team. :) By coming in early they can get grounded in college better and come under the eyes of the strength and conditioning coaches. (Rather then continue to work out on your own at home.) As well they can go through the March practices. A huge jump on anyone graduating in May. :D

I read a bit that he could come in early with Aldridge and Prince. So count for 2004 not now

Prince will not be an early entry candidate. His HS does not allow for it. Charlie is trying to get West to be an EE. Chris Stewart, if he commits, is also an ee.
