Not great news, maybe this was coming or maybe it is related to our next OC hire. Guy was huge for the program and an amazing OL coach.

Harry Hiestand, a 40-year collegiate coaching veteran who returned to Notre Dame in 2022 for a second time as the Joe Moore Offensive Line Coach, has announced his retirement from coaching.

“I have made the decision to retire,” Hiestand said. “It is important to me to spend time with my family, as I have two kids competing in college athletics, one for his last season, and I have decided it is time for me to be a part of that. I am thankful for the opportunity Father Jenkins, Jack Swarbrick and especially Coach Freeman gave me to return for a seventh season coaching the offensive line at Notre Dame.

Honestly, I see it as one of two things - it’s a sign that Ludwig is coming and wants his own guy or a sign that Hiestand is upset he wasn’t promoted to OC.

Wasnt this always the plan (though maybe a year early) and have Watt get the bump up?

That’s what I thought too

My guess is the former and not the latter.  He's never been an OC from my memory or indicated that's what he wanted.  Didn't think he was going to be around much longer anyhow.

Niether. He was never an OC and after 40 years of coaching the OL was not about getting a "promotion." And is his statement, Freeman thanked him for "coming out of retirement" last year to coach, so he just felt it was time to be with his family.

Yes, I noticed that 'coming out of retirement' from MF also. Perhaps with a new OC coming in, this is as good as time as any for Harry to retire. He will be difficult to replace.

Was Watt not let go by Tulane after coaching OL for one season?

No. he took a demotion to come to ND as an analyst under Heistand. At the time it was rumored that Harry would coach for 2-3 years and groom him to be the replacement.

With the timing I have a hard time believing that it doesn't have to do with Rees leaving and a new OC coming in.  I saw an article on on3 regarding Andy Heck winning the super bowl as the Chiefs OL coach.  He would be a great hire though I have no idea why he would leave a great situation other than Heck being a ND guy.  I don't know anything about Watts and his coaching ability at this point but it wouldn't make me comfortable hiring him as OL coach.
