Jacob Lacey no longer with program and transferring?  Why? Anyone know anything?

Sounds playing time related. Freeman says "Deep position on the team. He will graduate"

Sounds like he's using the 4 game rule to preserve a year and maybe have 2 as a transfer

Read somewhere that he played 9 snaps last game. This after coming off a two sack performance.

Sounds like he is a senior and wants to preserve eligibility.

I wish him nothing but the best.

That would definitely back up freemans words that he wanted more playing time then was available. If fans are wondering why, also remember the Ademilola twins stayed a year longer than most expected

Makes sense and definitely wish the young man the best.  just sucks to see him go.  Alot of potential from what I can see

Played with great effort. I think he'll work to find a place he can start and Make an NFL training camp. If memory serves the thing that that holds him back is he's not 6'5. But there are plenty of roles he can play for a team in the future.

Good luck kid. This is easy. He wants to start. If not then he wants 60-70 percent of the lions share. I’m sure after his 2 sack game he thought he earned it. When he got 9 snaps or whatever it was he decided that’s it. Been there done that. Even more understanding when this could literally be his last year ever of playing organized ball. Who wants to sit?

Wish him the best but he was falling behind some others. They were looking to get bigger on the inside and he’s a little under sized. The playing time just wasn’t going to be there the rest of the season saved for an injury

Not to pretend understand snaps given some of the production #s of some....

when you're not 6'5 run defense against big strong guards run defense(reverse push if you will) is a problem.

1st and 2nd downs are run downs(I know there are exceptions)

3rd down and long is a passing downs

there are less 3rd and Longs(Lacey's speciality inside pass rush situations) then all other downs.

Some where else he becomes more than a 3rd down specialist.

I understand general football logic. I expected more pass personnel vs UNC. So not pretending to understand "our personnel scheme" vs UNC. They tossed for around 300ish IIRC. And we've seen a lot tweaks to scheme this year.

Was he getting blown off the ball in the run game? I see the DT get doubled in the inside zone run scheme. So if they could push him out of the way, then 2 sacks get eaten away in rush yards pretty quickly in theory. I'd have to do some real research but thats a reasonable hypothesis without much research.

I know UNC's run O was 2ish avg YPC. Few long runs, IIRC 2nd level misses.

And I can understand run D guys in early downs, but seemed too much later downs.

Just happy we won. Thank God Pyne had a good game, and UNC's D is awful lol..

Rarely a team (UNC) looses when a QB is 300 and 5 TDs and 0 INTs..

That was a nice game overall. Pyne has been very Ian Bookish when hes good and we know thats perfect for an ND team who needs a bowl game for bowl practices right now.

One Last thought on Jacob Lacey. Clarke Lea and Freeman/Golden don't quite run the same defense. Marcus ideally is a 3-3-5. I know not yet but thats why he almost hired Heacock. So 3 down at least for half or more of the snaps means bigger DT's. So Lacey being recruited by Lea I think might have felt that change coming.

Pyne looked like many thought he could (finally)... Book or Rees - ish..

Limited like those guys, but playing good within his limitations.

Hope this confidence grows. And hope it translates vs better Ds later.

I'm actually surprised that more didn't transfer. Likely we'll see more this off season.

Happens when teams have scheme changes, and with new coaches.

Regardless, just need young kids to develop quickly.

For whatever reason ND has an abundance of D linemen that are in the 275lb range.  Both on the roster and coming in. ND seems to have trouble getting the ultra quick vyper ends and the 300lb NT types.  Lacey is a good player but it's such a crowded group.

Product of going with a "big-DE" on one side, playing 3-3-5 a good, and trying to develop/grow some guys to vyper.

Right not we have three 250-260ishs (Foskey, Justin, and Bothelho), and couple small guys trying to pack pounds on (Burnham, Ekwono). Too late for Ekwono. And we have others on the side, that might fit at Vyper better than big-DE. Nana is only 250. Gobaira is 240s.

Overall, we have several smaller guys, but the scheme is confusing if you listen to them, and then compare/watch depth charts...
