I for one do not see the allure of Tommy Rees. I thought at the time Brian Kelly made a buddy hire rather than the best man for the job. We’ve seen this with Quinn, BVG, etc…

Of course the team succeeded with him as OC. Kelly had built a solid program and ND had solid depth throughout the roster coupled with favourable schedules. Nevertheless he does get some credit for ND’s success. He was not as inept as some make him seem but he’s easily replaceable and ND can attract a top OC.

No offense, but the title of this thread is misleading and might induce needless anxiety.  Rees is not being poached, which implies he’s leaving.  The article confirms that some teams expressed interest.  That’s entirely different from “Rees being poached.”

That said, I agree with your analysis.  I’m not sure I see him as a wunderkind at this point.  I’ll have a better handle after this season.

I used the word “poached” based off a post on another board from someone who claims to have ‘sources.’ Nevertheless, based on the article, a more apt title would have been “approached.”

It will be interesting to see what Rees’ offence looks like without Kelly by his side though.

I think he is one of the brightest minds on offense. The way he scheme guys open in the Oklahoma game was quite impressive. I like his feel for the game.

The way I see it, the only improvement I really need to see so far is his QB recruiting.  Coan had impressive stats in quite a few games despite the WRs not being where they need to be. By this time next year I will have a better feel for how good he will be.

I have no problem with Rees being the OC.

Yeah, I’m glad he stayed. I think he’s been good and will only get better. He’s also pretty highly thought of as an OC, it seems (except on some ND boards 😎)

The problem will be now that the NFL threw out a line, I'm afraid other teams will be calling in the future and Rees's days at ND might be numbered.

BK didn’t end up in the NFL after Philly came calling in 2012

Dante moore will make him look like a genius.

Huge difference between being an ND Head Coach and an ND OC.

Thats the Key. Great players make Great plays. Brady made Bruce Ariens a Superbowl winner. No matter how scientific, how much nutrition, how many X and O's give me the team with the great players everytime

But ND OC to NFL OC might be easier jump to make from an interview perspective

I think in time people are going to realize what an asset he is to the program...

McVey junior.

Rees may not be a genius, but he is well thought of.

ND didn't have the best O talent in his short tenure, but did have good grades under his tenure.

Not saying he's a genius, but he's done decent with the hand dealt.

An uptick in O recruiting, especially at QB, could make him look very smart.

I think Rees has been undervalued . How our offense looked that last half of last season, was great, and without a very talented QB. I blame deficiencies at other coaching positions to our struggles . Very poor Oline coaching and WR coaching. Both of those positions have been rectified. Let’s see what the offense looks like this year and next with real coaching at key positions.
