@ELDER06Β I don't know if this will make you feel better about Rees not being at Moore's school today, but I thought I'd share.

  • Having a difference of opinion is one thing, being disrespectful and rude because others disagree with your opinion is entirely different.Β

I don't agree with you at all. Look at the rankings and offer lists of the commits. He's not landing elite guy year after year like OSU or Alabama, but to look at that list and say he sucks at recruiting is just not being fair or logical.Β

As for 2023, he needs to land Moore or Vizzina. Not sure where the Avery Johnson stuff is coming from. He doesn't have the green light to commit because ND wants Moore or Vizzina.Β

ND isn’t the leader for Moore or Vizzina. Also with Arnold committing to OK, it only makes sense that Johnson being the 4th option is who they sign.Β

So you are not for Firing Rees. Correct? Or in your opinion does his recruiting become fireable?

Correct. ND does not lead for either Moore of Vizzina right now (on January 26, 2022). That doesn't mean they can't land them. ND didn't even offer Jaylen Sneed, their highest 2022 commit, until January 18 of last year. Tobias Merriweather was an Oregon lean. Sebastian Cheeks was one of the safest bests to end up in the ND class. Just a few examples that there will be ton of movement between now and NSD.

Also, FWIW, it's been reported that Arnold intends to visit ND again.

Johnson is a backup option. He could end up committing, but, again, he does not have the green light to do so.

And last thing, there are other QBs who will emerge. At this time last year, Drew Allar was ranked as a three-star in the 400s (lower than Angeli). He is now a consensus Top 100 player and 5-star on 247. Players emerge and rankings change, so it's way too early to call QB recruiting in 2023 a lost cause.

@Jburkdd12Β - I'm keeping a close eye on this thread. Although there's a lot of debate going on, it's actually turning into a good discussion. Please don't de-rail it with posts like this.

Agree with this. Decent discussion, and more important, all in one place.Β

If I'm following along correctly, the two likeliest ways for ND to get an elite QB are:

1. Recruit Moore, Vezzina, or another class of 2023 prospect that ends up at the high 4 or 5 star level (call it top 50).

2. Refine Buchner's raw skills into the finished product.

(3. Get one through the transfer portal is unlikely enough to not warrant further discussion, in my opinion.)

Since #2 is the most relevant to the near future, I'm more interested in that. I think Rees will need to gamble on some growing pains to reach the potential upside Buchner offers. Does TB's potential merit committing to him as QB1 starting in the spring and sticking with it as he struggles, learns, and grows (we hope) until week 1?

Off topic somewhat, I think you gotta ride with Buchner. Weirdly, I think Buchner will be fine against OSU (tons of prep time, bright lights, etc.) and his struggle game will be against an unexpected opponent we should easily handle. This kind of happened with Malik (KILLED Texas, slow against UVA before his injury), Wimbush came out hot and his passing regressed from there, Dayne played super well against Michigan (until something got in his eye… I.e. probably a concussion), Book came out hot, etc etc etc. hell, even Coan played awesome against FSU then had a mini regression before getting the train back on the track. Maybe Kelly was to blame for QB regression, maybe it was the OCs, maybe it was the playcalling, etc. who knows. My best guess is that Kelly wasn’t a coach who handled adversity/QB struggles well and his response caused our guys to clam up, just my $0.02.Β

hopefully Rees can coach Buchner’s fundamentals up all offseason and then game plan the hell out of Ohio State.Β

It becomes fireable if he doesn’t sign Moore or Vizzina.Β
Β

Edit: or you don’t have to fire him, just shift his responsibilities to being strictly a play caller (ala Joe Brady) and bring in a QB coach who can recruit. I don’t like seeing people get fired, I’m not vindictive, and staff turnover is rarely a positive.Β

I’m not talking about a kid coming and starting next yr as a true Frosh. I think Buchner will be the starter but I don’t know how he’ll do. He has a lot of work to do on his passing.Β

Not a downer, but I’m not drinking the kool aid like many of you.Β

Buchner is more talented but he should have to win the job outright. I don’t care how many great plays he makes, if he turns the ball over like he did vs Va Tech, he can’t start.Β
Β

Anyone who watched the NFL playoffs last week should see how costly turnovers are; imagine your D getting 9 sacks but still losing bc your QB threw 3 Ints.Β

I find this thread offensive.Β  A gang of thugs jumping on one guy.

Shame on all of you.Β Β

And shame on Elder for berating people so often.

I agree that Buchner should have to win the job. However, if the choice is between Buchner potentially being elite (with mistakes along the way) or Pyne being Book-lite, I think I'd go with Buchner. I acknowledge that there are other options, too, like Pyne being an absolute stud. I'll accept that one, too.
