This time of year I take time to evaluate.

Here are my list of on field things ND needs to improve on.

  1. Run blocking- We "caught" a lot of blocks. I want ND to deliver the block, gain yardage with the block, create new space.
  2. Tackling in space- At the LB and Safety level ND was a step slow. Showed up in tackling the ball carrier and covering receivers
  3. Pass Receiver routes- ND has such good athletes now that need coached up. There is no reason that ND receivers can't stack a db, (force that defender in a single file line without allowing him to make a play on the ball.). Our receivers struggle with getting open, those things can be taught, they have the talent.

I'm sure you guys have 3 too. Lets write them down now and see if they come of the list next year.

I agree with all 3 of those to an extent. I think the tackling was inconsistent as there were some games they were bad and some games they were great; it was about 50/50 from my recollection.

1. Run Blocking - There is not much to say about this, this was weak all year long and Kyren made things happen on his own. Even the 200+yard games we had this year were not very good (against weak run defenses) and Kyren had a lot on his own (like the 90+ yard for a TD that he did IN SPITE of the terrible Oline).

2. I also agree with your #3 regarding the WRs, however, I would like to be a little more "all-encompassing." It was not just their routes that need help, but getting off the line, winning the 50/50 balls (if you look back, we had very few this year). You are correct, they won by simply being a better athlete majority of the time, which is why they could not do anything against Cincy and their stud CBs.

3. Better DB play. Once Kyle Hamilton went down, the only person who was consistently good was Cam Hart (they also rarely threw to him). The other CB spot was our weak point on the defense and it was pretty evident to see. However, I felt as though our Safety position was very inconsistent once Kyle Hamilton went down. Both Griffith and Brown would miss tackles that they needed to make, they were out of position enough times to deem it noticeable. The backend needs to step up next year and the defense could be even better and be stout against even the elite offenses.

Agreed.

Especially if ND wants to play more man to man coverage. Freeman made a comment post game that he had switched to more man to man and you saw Lewis struggle in the 2nd half.

You won't see Bama and UGA playing a ton of zone because they recruit corners who possess man to man coverage skills. So ND needs to recruit, develop and improve there.

  1. We need to get playmakers at corner. We don't need Revis Island levels of competence either, just guys who are athletically close to top end receivers and are a threat to take the ball away when quarterbacks screw up.  Consistent mid first round NFL draft level talents.
  2. No ND quarterback has won an NFL game since 2012 and our quarterback play can best be described as solid. Ian Book would beat 98% of teams in college football, Brady Quinn was essentially the same way. Jimmy Clausen would likely have been the same had the program not been in shambles. We need a guy who can compete with the top end schools, and can elevate the play of our receivers.
  3. We've already started doing this, but I want to see more regular season games against the Georgia's and OSUs as we move forward. This years schedule is going to really show where Notre Dame is at vs the rest of the landscape and beating these teams consistently is the last step for the program to take.  We are firmly placed in that second tier of college football. We beat the teams we are supposed to, it's time to move up a step.

Not sure if you realize that asking for "consistent mid first round NFL draft level talents" would mean that ND has the best CBs in college football almost every year. Even Alabama has not had that type of talent.

Since 2015, Alabama has had these CB draft picks:

2015 - none

2016 - 2nd round

2017 - 1st round

2018 - 4th round

2019 - none

2020 - 2nd round;

2021 - none

A QB/OC that isn’t an awful recruiter. Here’s his track record:

Clark

Jurkovec

Pyne

Buchner

Angeli

At best, one of those guys will be successful at ND. What a complete bum of a recruiter.
