This is a fantastic segway to a topic I wanted to post about but had reservations doing so for fear of being labeled a plagiarizer or something lol. I have been pretty open here about my inabilities to get in contact with mods/admin on Irish Envy to activate my account so I can only read their board I cannot post. They had a great discussion about how to fix college football. I wanted to post it here so we can have the same discussion and I can actually engage in it but I didn't wanna come off as copying them.

 

So, how does college football get fixed?

Something needs to be done. Bama is a semi pro team, not all of their athletes are students-athletes.

 

The playoff has hurt college football and has amplified the disparities. The name, image and likeness might help. I’ve heard the idea of a commissioner being floated around. However, they need to level the playing field because Bama, OSU and Clemson get all the players.

 

Expanded playoff wouldn’t hurt, but there would be a ton more blowouts.

Unfortunately, I think they are going to have to expand the playoffs. The top recruits only care about the CFP and the NFL. So any program that has shown no ability to make the CFP will never land top recruits. The more teams that get in increases the chances of diluting the three headed Bama, Clemson, Ohio State monster.

I agree. In this case I'm just wondering if the NCAA will have motivation to make changes.

Unfortunately, I think they are going to have to expand the playoffs. The top recruits only care about the CFP and the NFL. So any program that has shown no ability to make the CFP will never land top recruits. The more teams that get in increases the chances of diluting the three headed Bama, Clemson, Ohio State monster.

 

Keep the 4 team playoff. Dump the human committee, go back to the BCS computers(this removes the built in "eye test" excuse that would let in a 6-0 OSU). Restore the bowls back to their traditional bowls, make the final rankings AFTER the major bowls are finished instead of after the conference championship games. Take the top 4 teams AFTER the bowls and put them in the playoff. That will eliminate top players from opting out of non CFP bowl games thus keeping them alive to move on to the CFP. More schools in the mix more often will help spread the wealth.

 

Another thing I read would be placing a restriction on the amount of money that could be spent on recruiting. That would help keep the smaller market schools a little bit closer to the top schools.

I really like the idea of ranking the top 4 after the Bowl season. That is good.

I totally agree. Awarding and honoring 4 year scholarships to all recruits and monitoring the juco situations closer is all part of that imo.

BCS rankings actually used AP and Harris polls as major components so the human element was still there. If anything, there was a bias towards the SEC (8 game conference schedules and early pre-season ranking) which became a self-fulfilling prophecy to some extent since only two teams were chosen.

On paper the 4 year scholarship makes sense... but the Alabama’s will always find a way out of it.. “medical hardships” , kids not getting playing time so they transfer out. There will alway be a way for them to get around the rules. Juco’s will also always have a way around. They have to just get good enough grades to qualify. A lot of these Juco schools will make sure of that because that helps them. If you think there isn’t money getting pumped to them from certain conferences also you are mad.

 

I honestly don’t think you can fix college football. It has been broken for at least 20 years. Probably longer. There will always be a handful of teams that cheat around the rules and get all the great players. There will be cycles. For now it’s Bama, Clemson, Ohio state.. when Saban retires I’m sure some other school will take their spot .

There is no fixing it. It is what it is at this point and it is too far gone. It is exactly like our political system.

The NFL changing its policy that you need 3 yrs outside of HS to be in the draft would change the landscape real quick.

If.... and that's a big if..... the NCAA really wanted to fix the disparity in college football right now, they would launch a very wide investigation into all the major programs and impose penalties that matter. Multi-season bowl bans, scholarship penalties, win forfeitures... whatever it takes to get programs to understand they need to follow rules. The investigation needs to go into booster support and all that. Do a deep dig, uncover the dirt, make it public, then drop the hammer. Across the board.

Coach Kelly with his “we’re not quite there yet...but we will be”. Why are we not there NOW?? 10 years and we’re still not there, why?? When you continuously are unable to compete in the big games, wins and undefeated is irrelevant.

It just doesn’t work that college football is suppose to be the farm system for professional football. The NCAA should let Kids that don’t want to go to college should be allowed to be drafted right out of high school. Sure most kids at 18 aren’t physically ready to play in the professional football league. Like baseball they can go to junior college for a year or two then go pro. Or a farm system of football gyms will spring up. Kind of like summer football camps are now. Not all kids are college education material. Schools become the baby sitters for 3 years for these kids that don’t want an education.

I agree Jack, unfortunately there is way too much money in college football vs. Collegiate baseball. People want to see the best players in college football, people don’t give a damn about baseball. Basketball gets the one and done... maybe that could work. It would help ND , if we could keep kids for 3-4 years vs Bama only having kids 1-2 years.

Regarding 4 year scholarships...something I read was enforcing the full 4 years to the school who originally signs the player no matter if they transfer out or not. If you sign with Alabama, your scholarship counts against their 85 man limit for 4 years even if you transfer out after 2. This keeps the factories from stocking up the talent and constantly backfilling.

I get that, but, when you have humans picking everything you can easily screw with the process by adding the human factor. IE the eye test. "Yes, based off the stats and the analytics, these 4 teams are the best most deserving teams. However, we really think that 'this' team does a better job based on the eye test so we're putting them in instead of team 4."

I'm not saying that you have to use the same exact algorithms that the BCS computers used, just that you let computers do it again instead of people.
