As I tried to note from the press conference ND switched back to zone blocking. Zone step, reach blocks and double teams often inside

Its confusing because man blocking is not called that anymore they call it pin and pull. People will tell you pin and pull is zone but unless you coach lineman it looks alot like power.

Zone blocking is great if you teach it properly and have the personnel. The timing takes longer to get down. Still have to drive guys off the ball to get the running lanes. I think zone is most effective in the 2nd half when the defense gets tired.

Agreed. This is the 4th down touchdown. Dukes playing a very short yardage defense. Kyren sees that Tremble is likely to win the edge and it works out that the backer will get caught up in traffic.

I love zone with Kyren back there it gives him pretty free reign, whether he wants to run the exact play or read the blocks and find a crease bouncing forward or cutting back. I like the schemes that really punch a hole for guys who always hit the run at the point of attack.

Interesting I wonder what drove the change back. Did they feel with the quality offensive line they have been recruiting their blocking should be better then it has been. Or because of running back personnel.....Having a shifter Chris Tyree and Williams as RB.

Zone is geared more towards run plays outside the Tackle (Toss, Stretch, etc). Williams and Tyree are definitely more suited for those types of plays.

Exactly the year Weis had Darius Walker at Running Back we were in this a ton.

Screens will work better because these backs match up better with safeties and in Tyree's case corners then ends and linebackers.

Kyren had a run that was supposed to be a 5 yard loss, did a stop and go on an end and made it a 5 yard gain. Most ends won't be tracking our backs down back side for losses like they could with Josh and Tony. In fact if an end does get free up field he will have be under control or Kyren or Chris can make him miss.

You wanted to get Josh or Tony or even Dexter going sideways. Kyren and Chris the linebackers DO NOT want to be in open space with for the most part. Chris will run right by them and Kyren will fake them out.

I found this interview today. Liam talks about the zone blocking.

yup. ND was a zone blocking team under Holtz. Coach Moore. Coached Andy Heck who now Coaches the line for the Super Bowl winning Kansas City Chiefs. So you'll see Kansas city line going side to side those speedy backs gaining yards.

You always have people like Chip Long trying to improve and change things but this style of blocking works, it has worked and it will work.

The biggest concern is whether or not the ND offense will run anything to keep LBs (especially on the backside) home or can the LBs sell out to whichever direction the RB is headed. This can be the QB keeping the ball, jet sweeps, etc.

If, as in years past, the play calls/reads chosen in the game allowed the defense to mainly key on the RB and basically ignore worrying about any misdirection, then it can be a long day trying to run.

Yup JBrown's pointing out the zone read game and also the need for counter. We started running backside in the 2nd half, to great effect.

Lenzy coming across does it too. Glad he'll be back soon.

Gotta have plays that keep the backer from cheating to the RB. Play-Action boot leg works too.

Yes in the second half that miss direction to Armstrong back to the left side was sweet. Everyone was going Right. I thought for sure he was going to score.

Anything that makes the opposing teams defense react instead of pursue in for. Hard to play defense when you have to prep for anything.

I’m stoked with the three running back screens. It’s such a valuable weapon against teams that are pinning there ears back. I’m not completely sold on misdirection because that can get gobbled up quickly against better defenses. I would love to see more draws.

I’ve always thought the style that BK wants to run is better suited for our o-lineman running draws and screens. I guess we just never had the personnel...

Yes. Yes. and Yes. We need quick players for screens to work. When we had Fuller and Folston yes we ran good screens.

When we have Bigger running backs any last 5 seasons( I think) The linebackers are like we are the same size and speed(roughly) so they WERE not that scared of the screen, in fact we'll stay back.

Now they're like are best chance to stop the screen is to go get the QB and thats when the screen works when everyone runs at the qb.

I know most will say well isn't the screen about defensive lineman? Kind of.. but it really works wehen the whole front chases the QB..

The threat of misdirection is needed to make sure that the backside LB(s) and DE stay put for a second. Otherwise there is no cut-back lane.

To have a credible threat when running outside zone, you need to actually have someone other than the RB get the ball a good number of times. Otherwise, the defense just focuses on the RB and your running game gets squashed.

Yep. the chiefs will always have some one going the other way who gets the ball quite a bit. Another great modern example is the rams.

If it helps..

I call pin and pull "swing the gate".. half of the line blocks back(pins) half the line blocks forward(pulls)

I call zone blocking "moving the gate together" every one goes in one direction and they move the gate in that direction.

Each case you get your movement but swinging the gate pin and pull is more volatile(you can swing and miss, for a 5 yard loss or you can hit it perfectly and the seas part). Zone can get chased or beat but because the back knows where his cut back lanes are he can make something out of it..

I'm a zone guy. I like the consistency it creates..

Credit Rees, Taylor and Quinn for playing to the strength of the players and making it work. Based on the limited database, ND's line is ranked by Pro Football Focus as the best Oline in CF and by a wide margin. As the competition gets better, we'll have the chance to see if they can maintain their high level of play but great to see so far. GO IRISH!

Faith do you think the OL blocking scheme I.e. outside zone helps Taylor recruit the type of RB he wants? Could it have impacted Will Shipley decision Or am I reaching here?

Big reach. You adjust schemes for players like that.
