Pasted an interesting article regarding Kelly's take on DB recruiting. Kelly talks about how the staff looks for WRs that aren't as heavily recruited in the 6' to 6'2" range to convert to CBs.

While I think there is some logic to that, I hope the staff still makes every effort to compete with the CFB blue bloods for the 4/5 star DBs. Simply saying that the likes of Alabama and Clemson get all of those recruits is an excuse.

Im trying to think of the receivers Kelly has recruited that he’s switched to DB. Bennett Jackson is the only one off the top of my head. Russell and Coleman were running backs so I’m not counting them.

Obviously I read that Cam Hart switched to corner, but it’s unknown if he will ever see the field here. Regardless, I think his logic here is flawed.

Don't mind it for kids that played the position in HS along with WR. Taking a WR who's never played D is another story. If the WR is lower rated because the have the physical ability but aren't as polished with intangibles elite WR have: great hands, route running, etc, it could work in theory. It makes sense when you lack the bodies due to lapses in recruiting for whatever reason. Holtz was constantly doing things like this, though I think he shifted more RB to DB amongst other position switches.

I also agree that we should not give up on going after the 4/5 DB in our normal recruiting efforts. I don't believe we are alone in this either. I suspect there are a lot more WR 3* fitting the above criteria than there are 6'-6'2 3* DB's. And really I don't think there are that many highly ranked DB's in that height range. In todays day of football if you got height, speed, and can catch a football you are most assuredly going to play on offense.

It makes sense to me. A lot of times high schools play kids at positions of need. You might see the best athlete on a team at RB or QB where they are going to touch the ball the most. Kids are young and still growing. Kids often want to play a certain position. I can understand catching passes and scoring touchdowns is much more exciting to a young kid trying to impress the girls.

Sounds like his "Power, Skill, Big Skill" GVSU recruiting strategy. Is BK saying that since he cannot compete with the top programs and recruit 4 and 5 star CBs, he is going to recruit 3 star WRs and hope to teach them to be CBs?

I was ready to be up in arms about this, but then I read the whole article. I went from thinking "what a loser mentality to concede all the top CBs to the other elite programs". But that isn't actually what ND is doing. They want guys that can play the ball in the air, and that have measurables. There aren't many high school CBs that fit that mold. So they are trying to look at WRs that are tough enough, and like contact enough, to play CB at the next level.

I like the idea in theory and don't mind it as an option to consider. However, like others said, ND shouldn't rely on that and there's no reason that they can't get 1 or 2 top 25 DBs every year. Try harder!

I’m hoping it’s like the RB situation with Denison. After he left, ND hired a proven recruiter and ND lands their top RB target, borderline 5-star Chris Tyree and now one of the favorites to land borderline 5-star Will Shipley.

ND needs to hire a proven recruiter. No reason they can’t fill the secondary with 4-stars who have solid offer lists. They can’t keep filling the two-deep with 3-stars with lower level P5 offers and expect to win a CFP game.

I think this may be taken too directly for what will actually happen. ND will certainly go after the top CBs but, like this year, they will have back up options ready to go. In those cases they are identifying these WR types with priority. They need to land a Jalen Kimber type every class to mix with these options.

Like tneun89 said, hopefully the new coach along with, hopefully, Pride, Gilman, and Elliott getting drafted or making teams will help get the ball rolling.

Any news on the new DB coach? Read the other day about the possibility of the DB coach from the Bengals. Daronte Jones. Not sure how accurate it was. Also curious about a TE coach.

Jones is likely out. He is going to the Vikings I believe.

We have guys that can play the ball in the air?

I keep seeing coaches on the road visiting guys. Without there being a position coach assigned yet Coach Kelly should be in St Louis checking on Jakilin Johnson. After Shipley, he should be our next biggest priority.
