Swinging Gate

Sorry to beat a dead horse if this has already been asked, but I always wondered why we ran the "swinging gate" on extra points. I don't recall them using it to run any other trick plays out of that formation. Anybody know if we did in fact run anything special?

That play was the most annoying thing ever. It supposedly kept the other sp team off guard for less chance of a block. I still hated it.

It would be interesting to see a comparison of how many kicks were blocked under the swinging gate as compared to the traditional set up. I'm really not sure how that would be done, but it would be interesting nonetheless. Needless to say, if the gate is gone this season, I'm not gonna get misty-eyed.

Yep, I would have given up as many extra points as it took over the time we ran that play just to never see it again. Well, I say that now that those seasons are over .

All I know is, it didn't help us at all against BC, considering we ended up losing by 1 friggin' point that we should have had because of...........gasp..............a MISSED EXTRA POINT. I was at that game, still can't believe that fiasco. Oh well, new coach, new season, new optimism, let's get this thing started already!

I hate the swinging gate, it was painful to watch. At least ND didn't score very mucy so we didn't have to see it all that often. Seriously though i think it was a microcosm of the whole Willingham era. They were doing something that never seemed to work or make sense.

I'm not for it nor completely against it, but it worked. I can only remember one missed PAT, but a very costly one it proved to be as it provided the difference against BC this past year (The Irish lost 24-23, I'm sure you all remember)
