If this article is correct, ND's payout for a BCS Bowl is $1.3M +$4.6M = $5.9M.

I know because we're in, our merchandise sales go way up, and maybe our NBC contract might have an increase in 2015, or get renegotiated, etc, but damn knowing that the bowl payout will be around $23M this year for the championship, we really seem to be getting screwed.

Right, but that full amount goes to an entire conference, not just the team.

So the SEC will get the full amount, Bama will get whatever their share of that is, probably slightly more than 1/14th for being the team in the game.

ND doesn't have to split.

They used to get the full amount when they went, 17 million or something at the time, but would get nothing if they didn't go.

Now, they get like 1.3 every year regardless, plus the 4 or whatever it is when they do make the game. Probably seems more fair overall.

Corey beat me to it! His comments are dead on. The fact that the payout goes to the entire conference is a fact that always gets misconstrued in the media (just ask Rick Reily (sp)). The payout seems fair on a school by school basis. The real outrage is that you have schools like Iowa State or Indiana that are rarely if ever deserving to get to a BCS bowl, but get to share in the spoils created by being a member of a BCS bowl conference. Conferences can double down if they partipate in more than one BCS bowl game (the payout for the second BCS bowl is slightly less if I recall correctly).

What media outlets are reporting the payouts incorrectly?

I like the old payout method better. I guess I'd rather take the $20M.

But what about whent he playoff starts. Anyone have data on how we're affected when that occurs. There's got to be money for each game.

Also, do you realize at the UM vs Alabama game this year, each team received $10M. So effectively we can get double from a game separate from the BCS, having nothing to do with a championship (just based on reputation).

The New Jersey ones, IIRC. Especially the Star-Ledger. ;)

Michigan got $4.5 million from that game. I'm betting Alabama got $5.5 million and the TOTAL payout was likely close to $10 million for the two teams combined.

Thinking I remember that the deal is ND gets a payout every year regardless of if they are in the big game or not. The draw back is we don't get the payday if we go to the big dance.

Maybe someone with a better memory could enlighten us on the last BSC contract.

Notre Dame is effectively in a 66 team conference. When they go BCS, they get the 4.5 mill....the remainder of their 'share' goes to other 65 teams.

This article is three or four years old...the numbers may be a bit different, but I believe the process still applies.

"Notre Dame appearing the NCG will generate revenue of at least 200,000 dollars for each BCS school." think about that awhile.

I used the term misconstrued because many media outlets report the BCS payout on a per team basis (i.e. School X gets a $20MM payout for the game). The truth is that the payout goes to the conference then gets split up, but that rarely gets mentioned nor is the payout listed as a conference payout. Poorly researched journalists like Rick Reilly add to the confusion. He complained in his original blame ND piece earlier in the year that we received money when we didnt go to a bowl game..when that is in fact what lower tier BCS programs do every year.

The combination of Kevin White and Ty Willingham screwed us out of the spoils of being independent. Not getting half and sharing more than half with the socialist conferences is bs. Conferences are nothing but risk aversion. We take on complete risk to be on our own, so we should get the full reward for taking on that risk. Nobody originally gave us a cut when we weren't in a bowl and we took everything when we were. 1 bowl appearance was worth 3 or 4 years worth of bowl appearances by a team in a conference.

I will NEVER forgive Willingham and White for capitulating to a defeatest mentality, or at least setting us in motion for any sort of defeatist mentality. Half that money should be ours as a reward for standing on our own and not relying on better teams to prop us up and fund us. We don't need anyone else. F ALL!

I'm much hotter. Plus I can never get all my paperwork to look like a face no matter how long I try.

Does Notre Dame in fact get $1.3 million even if they don't qualify for a BCS game?

Yes -- or some number close to that. The funny thing is, this all came about as a result of others' whining that the previous system (feast or famine for ND) was "unfair"...so they instead agreed to a framework by which we get a big ole welfare check every year, and then a tad more when we actually make the BCS. Lo and behold, people are complaining again that ND is a Sweetheart.

If we are going to be seen as the teacher's pet no matter what, I say we go back to the old arrangement. I agree wholeheartedly with Wave about White's lack of cojones.
