AFTER THE 1988 SEASON. THEN IN 1994..THE TALENT HAD BEGUN TO DIP, MEDIOCRE ASSISTANTS, PLUS HOLTZ LEFT AFTER 1996. IT IS A

SHAME NOTRE DAME HAD FALLEN ON "HARD TIMES" BETWEEN 1994 and 2004. DOES ANYONE KNOW THE REASON HOLTZ LEFT AFTER THE 1996 SEASON. I HEAR HE WAS FORCED OUT FOR SOME REASON. THEN BOB DAVIE CAME IN...35 and 25....THEN THE O LEARY FIASCO THAT LASTED ABOUT AS LONG AS A MANAGER OF THE NY YANKEES...BRIEF. THEN THE FAKE COACH TY CAME IN ZZZZZZZZZZZ FOR THE PAST THREE SEASONS. NOW WE HAVE A BREATHE OF FRESH AIR UNDER COACH CHARLIE, FOUR SUPER BOWL RINGS AS AN ASSISTANT COACH. WEIS IS ALREADY A WINNER...NO CONTROVERSIES, NO TROUBLEMAKERS,

I was a freshman in HS when Holtz left, and not nearly as informed about the IRISH as the rabid fan I am today. I do recall the general concensus was that he was forced out, but I think both parties had simply tired of one another. As much as I despised Davie as a head coach, I think he would have been a valuable DC under a different head coach. It's irrelevant now, because WE IS ND, let's rip the rear-view mirrors off this bus and floor it on down the road!

There was some controversy when Holtz left. I know part of the reason, at least as far as I heard, was that there is a certain tradition that coaches only stay at ND for 10 or 11 years, following Knute's precedent. Rock, Frank, Ara, and Holtz all coached for 10 or 11 years. Additionally, none of those that came after Rockne were to eclipse his total wins. It is made even trickier now-a-days considering in Rock's days we were playing 10 games max, versus 12-13 now.

 

Also, I think there was a changing in the guard with the administration. Funk Milloy was taking over, cleaning house, all that stuff. He was probably upset that Holtz was a more recognized symbol of the University than he was. Hesburgh was such an amazing leader he never had to worry about anybody ever becoming more influential than he was. And even if people like Ara or Lou became more recognizable than he, if it promoted the university's mission he was willing to take the back seat.

And granted nobody wants to be the guy to follow the legend, but Funk seemed extremely inept compared to Sweaty Teddy.

 

To paraphrase Hes... Notre Dame is not meant to be mediocre at anything.

And here's hoping that Jenkins will stick to that same philosophy. So far, he seems to be. You can't fight the football program and still expect it to pay the bills. You have to embrace it, nurture it.

I think it's good to study history. (Those who fail to learn from it are doomed to repeat it) After the last two guys we did step back an learn a few things. Now if we can make sure any coach down the road never leaves the recruiting toi chance then we have something. There's no rear view mirrors just facts to look at in determining the shape and form of the futre. That bus is rollin onwards.
