Players tipping off the other team?

Blue-Gray sky had a nice article Aug 18th on Coach Raph Friedgen using computers to cut up opposing film.

Although this is not really news. Coach Bilichik was featured on 60 minutes once and again in a repeat on CBS over the same issue last year. I am sure Coach Weis brought that system to Notre Dame.

What caught my attention was a coach saying that during the 1999 Gater Bow an ND linemen was tipping off the play to the opposing team by his 3 point stance.

This does happen and does cut two ways.

I do recall...Sigh this dates me. Johnny Unitas of the then BALTIMORE Colts was accused of tipping off pass plays. Notice NOT Indianapolis Colts.

He wore a long undershirt under a jersey. Then if he pulled that sleeve up it meant a pass.

Unitas remarked. If my sleeve falls down I simply tug it up.

Whether he was really tipping off? I'll never know. But then suppose he starts tugging it up and it's a run. He just sucked off the defense.

So these are meaningless remarks even by coaches over tendencies by alert and intelligent staff. Put your right hand down on the line but this time cut left. Chess game.

It's an interesting concept. Overall, I don't know that it would effect the outcome of a game, but it could definitely disrupt some key plays. I just want our guys to be able to run, catch, throw, block, tackle, and kick. Fundamentals first, let the chips fall where they may for the rest.
