Another Willingham blunder??

I was reading espn the mag in the break room at lunch time and found an article that said that Rob Shoenhoft (sp?) is absolutely tearing up at summer camps and all-star games. I also read this morning a Matt Hayes article on the sportingnews online that Ryan Bain is tearing it up for Iowa and may start on the D-line as a freshman. If my memory is correct both those guys were in love with ND and Ty never even offered Bain and didn't offer Shoenhoft until it was too late. Now, it's very possible that these guys would have changed their mind once Willingham was fired but with our lack of depth at d-line and qb it would be nice to think about these guys being in the fold and makes you wonder why Willingham didn't bring them in. It's funny that Ferentz and Tressel wanted these guys yet Willingham didn't. Don't get me wrong I love Sharpley but Shoenhoft and Bain would be great addtions for us. At any rate those days are over and we can look forward to a coach who will make some mistakes but not habitually like Willingham.

Assuming that there were no external factors (i.e. grades, etc.), that is just one of the many inexcusable flaws from TW's coaching stint. It may fly at Stanford, but not at ND. I highly doubt we will be having this same conversation about CW at any point in the future. Here's to righting the ship! GO IRISH!

i should have added that it's possible something else was a factor but from everything that was reported with those 2 nothing was. Bain was never offered until Weis was hired and the coaches were in love with Sanchez and when he came to visit Deidrick was on vacation. I think it illustrates the bigger problem that Ty was after west coast kids that he had little to no shot at getting instead of brining in the midwest kids who are blue-collar and aren't afraid of a little snow. One last point, i can't tell you guys how thrilled I am that Weis has a recruiting class that includes kids from MO, IN, ILL, Penn, OH, Mass, etc.. My buddies and I have talked about it for the last few years how Davie was in love with Texas and Ty was in love with California when it came to recruiting. Meanwhile quality midwest kids who can play, and other programs were using to beat ND, were not being recruited. ND needs to be strong in the midwest and then pick a few up from Texas, FL, and Cali, instead of the other way around. Weis does not have this misunderstanding.

Tobey, I agree 100%. I never followed recruiting thoroughly until last year, and especially this year. I would check up on it occasionally in the past, but never dug too deep. Now that I see the names appearing in rosters (and headlines) across the country, I am recognized them and realizing the atrocious recruiting flaws ND has faced under the past 2 coaches. Last I checked, the Big 10 is a "fairly decent" conference that ND just happens to sit right in the middle of. Like you said, those schools are recruiting midwest guys and beating us with them, or taking them to BCS games, or NC's.............you get the idea. Keep it up Charlie, GO IRISH!
