Guest IrishTobey
On my way to work this morning I was thinking about the defense. In the past ND has been tough against the run but completely exposed against a good passing team like Purdue, USC, Pitt, etc... I never played football so I would love more details on ND's new defense. Is it a 4-2-5 or a 3-3-5.?What are the major differences? Isn't a a 4-2-5 a nickle defense? Will this mean they will be weaker against the run? Is the appache linebacker the 3rd linebacker or the 5th d-back? I was reading some articles on Pitt last night and they are going to try and run the ball more. Will this be an advantage for ND or Pitt? In the past I would have said it would be great for ND but now I'm not sure. I can't imagine that Pitt with Palko and Lee will just strap it on and play 3 yards and a cloud of dust but I'm curious what the board thinks on the new d and how it will work. I understand a 4-3 and the 3-4 pretty well but when I'm watching the game what do I need to be looking for? Who should be where? I think they'll probably be more athletic and quicker this year but my concern is how vulnerable will they be to the run.
Guest SirJohn
Toby Rather the alot of verbage hereon any set up: Click How to run a Fooball Defense on line or eteamz. football defense. It provides a better visual set up and simple explanatios. A goog chlak board of X and Os in there I have a clear idea of each set. Here then is the kicker. I don't think Minter is going to use any. Early Spring he said 4-3. which I think was a red herring.. ' for the Blue Gold so as not to show anything this early. Enter Weis saying disguise your weakness' (Certainly was secondary) Back to Minter shifting guys into various spots where we need speed. Let me give an example I think Minter will say I'll show the opposing offense a 4-3 which is NOT going to be. Which happens to be a good way of saying darned if I know what Minter is going to do along with Coach Weis. I figue if I can see and say ND is lining up 4-3 that opposing QB and Coach can see it and dismantle the sucker. (A Romeo Jr is needed.) Guest Irish19
I agree with Sir John. The only indication of a defense he would run was a 4-3, but I believe this is not true. They will probably run something different because why would they tell the opponent what type of defense they would run.
Guest Snatchy_McPants
I don't know enough about schemes to elaborate on them, but I still firmly believe that the majority of our problems against the pass last year were scheme problems. Yes, the skill coaching was probably sub-par, but I think the predictability and vulnerability of our pass defense allowed opposing coaches to review weeks of film and pinpoint exact weaknesses to exploit. ANY change in defense scheme in that regard is a welcome change.
Guest Irish19
The more I read the more I see that Minter wants a 4 man front, two linebackers, and that would leave 5 DB's. The first string in practice is: DL: Abiamiri, Laws, Landri, Frome LB: Crum and Hoyte DB: Zbikowski, Ndukwe, Ferrine, Richardson, and Lambert/Jabbie
