Guest IrishTobey
All this talk about ND not deserving a bid is bunk and here's why 1.) ND has a contractual agreement with the BCS to be eligible for a BCS bowl if they win 9 games and are ranked in the top 12. They have met the criteria that every conference comissioner and AD agreed upon. Hey, Oregon, Auburn and OSU don't blame ND for making a wise move. Blame your own AD's and conference comissioners for agreeing to it. 2.) The point about ND only beating 3 teams with a winning record is valid. However, they destroyed all these bad teams. They crushed Washington, Purdue, Pitt, Tennessessee, BYU, Syracuse, and even doubled up the total yards against Stanford. OSU and Oregon especially should know a thing or 2 about beating bad teams decisively. They've been scheduling that way for years. By the way Oregon, what was your final score against USC. Oh and bye the way Ohio ST. All this talk about playing TX and Penn ST. and how tough your schedule is. Need I remind you that those teams BEAT YOU!!!! Shut-up, drink your medicine and go home. ND might have only 1 quality at Michigan but like a top 5 team does they pretty much destroyed everybody else that they played. 3.) My finaly point is this. The bowls can pick teams that will generate the most revenue. Outside of Oregon who actually cares about Oregon football. (insert cricket sounds here) The bowls have the right to make money and it is a business decsion. ND will generate the most revenue. Don't blame ND! Blame the system. The only thing ND did wrong was meet the criteria that EVERYBODY ELSE AGREED TOO!!! Don't cry about it now.
Guest SirJohn
Really nice Tobey, write more. Your points are well taken. I can't tell you how many times some Notre Dame Hater has told me you lost to a 5-6 (?) Michigan State team. (Not sure of their end record) My reply has always been we played them September 17th as our THIRD game. How is Notre Dame responsible for more than one out of their eleven games? They were NOT 5-6 or whatever when we played them. To be blunt the BCS needs the new Irish more than we need them. Even ABC feels that next years 4.5 million to ND will be "re-tooled" The BCS is driven by one thing GREED. If it were not so then the #1 team would play #2, #3 play #4 regardless of conference, affiliation, fan base and who travels best.
Guest IrishTobey
You're dead on. Everybody wants to blame the BCS but why aren't the AD's and conference commissioners on the hot seat? It's their lame-duck system. I can fix it real quick but it would involve the 6 conferences giving up the automatic bid. That's the real crime in all of this. Not that ND is going to BCS bid but that FSU, Colorado, West Virginia, and South Florida, yes that's right S. Florida are all one win from an automatic BCS bid. that's the travesty. Not ND most likely going to the Fiesta. Here's how you fix it. Do away with the automatic bid. Screw the stupid piggy back system that's going in place next year. The fifth BCS bowl game needs to be the cotton bowl. Ya take the top 10 teams in the BCS regardless of the conference. In mid-december you play #1 vs #4 and #2 vs #3. #1 and #2 get the home game on their own campus so being the higher ranked team gets you the home field advantage. So this year if USC and TX win this weekend you would have USC host LSU and TX would host Penn St in Mid-december when there isn't any games anyway. #5 through #10 would be paired up ahead of time to create the most intriging match-ups and avoid rematches. Every 5 years one of the bowls would get the 2 winners of the min-playoff for the national championship game and every 5 years one of the bowls would host the consulation game so the rotation would be fair. Some years you might have a conference with 3 teams and some years you might have a conference with no one in the BCS. The regular season would still be the most meaningful regular season in any major sport and you would avoid an undefeated Auburn not getting a crack at a NC without watering down the play-offs or regular season. OK, so I've probably put to much thought into this but it I think it would work and be fun to watch.
