No need to worry. Marcus knows what good offense looks like, he'll learn from tommy why it looks that way. Like I could tell you alot I've learned about football, but I couldn't coach because I'd need to learn how to line up the kids particularly on special teams.

There is so much to know that one coach can't know everything.

For instance, Brian Kelly was a defensive Coordinator before being a head coach at Grand Valley State. in 2016 after  BVG for a half a year or so we were in a 1989 vintage defense with a few 2012 twists.

Freeman, Lea and Elko were head coach of their defense. Kelly would be in trouble without a defensive coordinator.

Similarly Freeman will always need an offensive coordinator.

Yes in their prime Belichick and Saban could probably run everything but most head coaches depend on assistants.

I’m a little worried about his inexperience also.

the greatest leaders do what they do well and outsource/hire the rest.

im more worried that it sounds like the new DC will be bringing in a new-ish system and they coaches are going to work to keep the terminology similar for the players.

DC might well still be Elston he might win his audition at the bowl game. He's not saying it but Elston calls the plays in practice. The defensive coordinator will be watched by Freeman just like the offense was watched by BK,

That also worries me having a 1st time coordinator as a 1st time HC. It's just one more thing for him to have to micromanage while dealing with all the minutiae and delegation.

I'm a tightly wound anxious person so I'm sure they'll be fine just lots of what ifs when we don't know whos coming/going player & coaches.

Me too. This time of unknowns is tough. But part me just lets it be because its gonna happen, and then we'll have information

I think there will be growing pains with Freeman as a first time HC. I also think there will be growing pains with Tommy, a 29 yr old OC running the show and whoever we bring in as a DC because they will be either a) new or b) learning Freeman’s defense.

Where there are concerns about growing pains, I think the common thread is that ND is targeting rising stars who are very well regarded and seem to be hardworking people. As much as the GRIND TAPE football coach culture/media wants to make this all seem like the hardest job in the world, at the end of the day we’re not landing people on the moon here. So I think we’re gonna be fine so long as we have talented players (check) who are being coached by invested, hardworking coaches (seems like check this box too).

I was thinking the same thing about the trajectory.. it's recruit players, develop them and not get out X and O'd on game day..

To those points you made, I almost thought about starting a MF expectations thread.

For example, I'd be fine if with the next 3-4 years we are a 10 win football team so long as we're more competitive in the big games with top 5 talent against top 5 competition. I'd like them to start out hot and run the table in the next year or two... But, I expect some growing pains, but beating top 5 playoff caliber teams and blowing out some teams that CBK was too scared to open up the playbook on would be just fine by me if we're in this for the long haul with MF like I hope we are.

Thats a good idea JT, I'm in favor of a expectations thread. This software allows you to make a poll too if you want/

As a former baseball coach this is just coach speak to me. I would say that to give our other coach props. Saying this is a prop up and a staff builder.
Also, as someone said, everyone does learn from other coaches. If you are a good coach you will differentiate between what the coach is saying or doing that’s good and what’s bad. They choose what will be best that fits his agenda. That’s what I would do.
Freeman is well respected and seems that way with the coaches based on why they all stayed. I honestly think he likes Rees and is just giving props.

Context, what exactly is he learning?

You can learn something from every single person on this planet. If you’re too arrogant to think that, then there’s a good chance you won’t be all that successful.

nevermind anyone… we’re taking about an OC who’s team is 22-3 while in that position and was a 3 year starter at QB for ND. Sorry OP… this is a horrible take.

This is a perfect example of seeing what you want to see. You’re within your rights to be freaked out by that, but it seems pretty clear from your previous comments that you already weren’t confident in the Freeman hire. So you’re going to approach comments like this with that predisposition.

Me? I think they made the right decision with hiring Marcus. And I think this is a harmless comment.
